The DUNE challenge? Illustrate this Intro....

"In the beginning"

Princess Irulan:
(audio >>LINK (http://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/Dune_(film))<<)

A beginning is a very delicate time. Know then, that is is the year 10191.

The known universe is ruled by the Padishah Emperor Shaddam the Fourth, my father. In this time, the most precious substance in the universe is the spice Melange. The spice extends life. The spice expands consciousness. The spice is vital to space travel. The Spacing Guild and its navigators, who the spice has mutated over 4000 years, use the orange spice gas, which gives them the ability to fold space. That is, travel to any part of the universe without moving. Oh, yes. I forgot to tell you. The spice exists on only one planet in the entire universe. A desolate, dry planet with vast deserts. Hidden away within the rocks of these deserts are a people known as the Fremen, who have long held a prophecy that a man would come, a messiah, who would lead them to true freedom.

The planet is Arrakis, also known as Dune.

FIXED...

Keep in mind, the movie DOES NOT do justice to the book. But the movie is a great way to visualize the book.

Never read the book, probably never will since I have dislectic problems.

One of the things that I remember from the movie (space navigator and that big door into the spaceship)

SB + PS 50min

Some facts:
-It's like 10 years ago that i watched that movie and read the book.
-The first dune movie is as old as i am.
-Patrick steward hasn't changed a bit. Scary!

I am another devotee of the first film, the extended version, the SciFi channel miniseries and of course, all the books (which I got through to Children of Dune)

Love it!!

Unfortunately never read the books...just saw the movies. So, what I remember of the beginning of the movie is something like this (about 1.5 hrs Painter):

I like a lot of these works.

Labyrinth, your work got a nice 'texture' feel to it, as if you can touch it. It does look a bit cold though for a Dune planet (because of all the blue I think)

I never watched the movie because I found it too scary when was I kid :)

Painter and Photoshop 3 hours. Now that i look at it... i feel that it somewhat does not depict the title of the thread very well. I'll wait for the other Dune related threads to improve. Great idea for a thread subject by the way! :D

nice work ribaman, sandworms are so cool that its hard to resist drawing them though isnt it?!
I fell for the same temptation of not dojng an introductory piece but instead drawing the sandworm. I think the thing for me was about doing a quick sketch for a book cover so i thought about the most dynamic image in the dune universe(i i wasnt the only one), basically sandworms are cool so you shoudnt need to backpedal!
