Dug out an old project I did last year purely as a personal project/modelling exercise.

couple of textures missing at the moment - my plan is to make a short animation! (first one) Got to try sometime eh?

Thought i would lhave a go at using one of those fangled lighting domes. Quite pleased with the result really. Quick render - 2 minutes at 480*360

All the lights are set to around 5-10% brightness - soft shadows.

amapimaster,

Very nice! You're so close! Well in my humble opinion.

The lights look just a touch too hot. Although that might be you intention.

I don't mind the soft shadows in this, sometime I like them too (must be a personal thing).

The cockpit needs just a hint more transparency. Also, the highlight needs to be more apparent for that as well. the highlight should look harsh and crisp.

The black pieces seem a little black. Hard to make out the shapes with any precision.

Great job! Keep it up! :)

I agree with the black and the sharp specular, but sometimes those old lego peices could have pretty dirty clear pieces.

I have to admit I've never heard of this lighting dome thing. It looks like a sphere with spotlights pointing inwards at the vertices. What is it that makes this unique? Why not use a sky object?

EDT: Oh wait, you're faking radiosity. Ok... ...nice. :)

that's great, did you use a plugin to get the light dome thing, if so... where can i get it?

I expect he used DiTools (http://www.remotion.de.vu/) :)

thanks, hmm.. why are the ditools 2mb for r7 but only 420k for r8?

Hmmm... Seems a little odd, but everything seems to be there.

Oh there might be some examples or something with R7 version.

By the way, very nice pictures there, I used to love lego. :buttrock: One thing that stands out to me though is the low polycount on the exhaust, it just looks a little too square... but like I say very nice pics. :)

yeah there's quite a few examples here too...

medula/Caravaggio - i pushed the curves up a bit in photoshop.. maybe to high? Agreed about the black and the highlight on the screen. Could be my Mac gamma though?

Not seen Ditools (set it up manually doh!), My loving father got me a cg lighting book for xmas and it mentioned using an array of lights in this manner to get a nice softlight/shadowing. Theres about 65 spots I think.

Phasmatis - the low poly count is giving me trouble on that back exhaust.. That section needs re-doing I think. When I originally drew the thing I was just starting out and for some reason I only have the model as a dxf. Pah!

Cheers for comments. Will try and post some updates tomorrow taking note of your suggestions.

Agree with what the others have said. Just wanted to add my kudos for a good job. Love those Lego models. Never did any as a kid but my son use to do these when he was younger.

Heh, that certainly is a doh! moment. :) But yeah the dome lighting technic is pretty good, I've started using it on most of my models (the ones that aren't in enviroments anyway).

I just thought of somthing, one thing you could do is put LEGO on the bumps of the lego.
