Hey all,

I'm your typical stubborn MAX-user-for-years going Maya :), and of course I'm hitting various obstacles in the process. I'll likely have more questions for the future, but for now I'll limit it to one specific thing: Can I set up keyboard-shortcuts to switch between, in MAX speek, "Local", "Screen", and "World" axis?

So far I've figured out I can doubleclick on the Move tool icon and select Object mode (Local axis in MAX speek). But I haven't got the foggiest idea how to make that a shortcut key. I can't find it in the Preferences window and such.. (it may indeed be there, I just can't find it..)

The same question goes for setting it back to World, figuring out how to switch between those two would be much helpful.

Then there's Screen mode.. Is it at all available outside the square built into the Move gizmo? Not such a huge problem, but it would be a timesaver to figure it out.

Changing these settings doesn't seem to do any trace in the Script Editor.. I thought for a second how clever I was for looking there, but ah well.. :)

Thanks in advance for any responses.

this are the commands to switch to the respective mode - you can setup hotkeys and assign this commands to them (Window->Settings/Preferences->Hotkeys...)

object - "manipMoveContext -edit -mode 0 Move;"
local - "manipMoveContext -edit -mode 1 Move;"
world - "manipMoveContext -edit -mode 2 Move;"
normal - "manipMoveContext -edit -mode 3 Move;"

if you are using 4.5 then you have a marking menu assigned to the w key (and the other transformation keys too) - just press w and LMB

what's screen mode?

Thanks a lot stunndman, that seems to be the exact solution to my problems. And I learned how to assign hotkeys to custom instructions along the way as well, so that's cool in itself.

Oh, and by Screen-mode I mean so that the Z (depth) axis are always oriented towards your monitor. So that you, in effect, move objects on the same 2D plane as you're watching from. It may sound odd to dedicate the entire move gizmo to that function, but I've grown very attached to working like that. It's exactly how that little square in the Move gizmo generally behaves though so it's not like Maya is missing the feaure or anything. "Screen-mode" in itself is of course MAX speek.. I'll be cursed with speaking in that tongue for a long time I imagine :)

But thanks again, obstacle 1 -- removed :)
