View Full Version : Dec 10 sec club animation
Rogue 01-07-2003, 07:59 AM Hey guys. Here's my Dec 10 sec club animation. I didn't quite have the time to finalize it as I would've liked, but, it was the holidays. I was happy with the direction I was going, but a lot of little tweaks are still needed. I probably won't return to it anytime soon...I tend to take crits and move forward. And since I'm trying to do both the 10 sec club animations and the CGTalk animation challenges, I don't have much time to go backwards.
In a few months I might take off from competitions and rework some of these animations. Hopefully I will get enough crits and learn enough by then to really make the animations alot better. I learn soooo much from crits....so please, crit away...

I thought the first half was great.. nice acting.. and then you started over acting everything..
Remember you don't have to hit everything, the key is in being subtle... (just like in the begining of your animation)
also, make sure you loosen up the fingers a bit more.. there is a lot of life in the fingers, and a character will come aline a lot more just by simple finger movements
Nice anim!!

Thanks for the repsonse goosh. I totally agree with you on the fingers. But it was the last things I animated and I had to do them quik!!! Damn holidays. :) If you'll notice, all the fingers move at the same time. I don't have any offsets or anything. And there are places that the thumb doesn't move at all....yyucck!! I'm glad you noticed and pointed it out. That tells me that the eyes still notice the little things. :)
As for the over acting. I see your point. But I was going for an over the top kind of animation. The clip was fairly energetic, so I wanted to try and get alot of movement and motion happening. I might have over done it. I tell you what inspired it...it was an animation done by Jason Taylor. Check it out. I can't give you the link directly, but go 10 second club (http://www.10secondclub.org/), then latest winners, then 2001, then the september spot by Jason Taylor. It was kind of this over the top acting thing that I wanted to try. Maybe I didn't pull it off as well as I would have liked to. :) You live and learn!
Thanks for your responce!

really cool !.....add some secondary animation....e.g. a lightly movements of the ears or cheek hairs.....try a small pause after the word "...chrismas special", i think it would be underline the dynamic "monent/words".....

looks great Rogue!! i think it looks great other than the part where he points saying "showing it to everybody in town". i don't think you would point to the town(or take two steps towards it), but rather look at the person your talking to and gesture your hand towards the area of the town. just an idea, but that part looks off to me.everything else looks really good to me, nice work man!:)

I agree, your voice clip does have alot of energy, but I find the animation a little tame and not enough movement. I think you can animate well and with the tweaks already mentioned it could be strong animation. But as far as selling me on the "over the top", I think it needs work. Try watching it without the sound and see if your character is emoting the same sense of excitment as the voice. You could try things like duck his head in and curl forward, then pop out with a hop and your arm posing into "that's it". Maybe throw in a head shake in the second part. Give me a reason to why he takes those steps. Is he pacing in thought? Make him look around or up and away... something. You see what I'm saying? It appears that he's just doing the same moves through out the whole thing, I'd spice it up.
I would suggest following up with the crits, instead of just taking them and moving forward. I see the benifit in entering all the competitions, but I also think that pushing a project all the way through to the finish is a really important step in learning to animate. I'd take the time out and take advantage of all the great feedback ppl give on the site. I'm really interested to see you push this one to the end.

Thanks for the responses guys.
FKMaster: His ears are animatable, I just didn't animate them. I guess I thought I could get away with it. :) You're right though, they need to have some motion to them. The cheeks are not currently animatable but it wouldn't take long to set something up.
tubby: Yeah, I don't like the ending either. I liked it at first, but after a while, it just started looking out of place. I'll see what I can do with it when I update. Also, I haven't seen an entry from you in this month's challenge. I'd like to see you enter this month.
Ripley: Yes, I do see what you're saying. You've given me some good things to ponder and to implement. Thanks. Also, I was planning on returning to this in the future after I'd picked up some more experience. But you're absolutely right about the things to learn by seeing it all the way through the end. I didn't really look at it that way.
Thanks again for the responses.
