View Full Version : shadow renders for composite

hello all, i'm fairly new here, and have a pretty simple question that i'm sure most of you can tackle in your sleep...

first off, i'm using maya (obviously), on a mac (though that probably won't matter in my case). i want to basically make a very simple object (a ball) and render it out such that i can composite into a still image of a bookshelf, giving the end result of the ball looking like it's on the bookshelf of course.

so then, what i have set up is the ball, with primitives where the shelf is, and the books that are behind the ball where i want the ball's shadow to fall...

i have it lit such that the shadow will fall behind the ball, on the shelf partially and on the books partially, it's a pretty small ball.

basically, i just need to get the ball to render, and then render out the shadows separately if i understand correctly....

so how would i do that? how much detail do i have to give to the objects the shadow's falling on (it's not 100% opaque, but close)?..

from what i thought, i figured i could render the ball, then the shadows as they'd fall on the objects, but without the objects being there.....?

thanks in advance for any help....

When you go to render a shadow pass assign a use background shader to everything. Change the camera background to white. In the background shader attribute editor you probably want to change reflectivity to 0 and specular color to black. Now turn on your shadows and render. You can then add this layer with a transfer mode of multiply using your favorite compositing package.

make sense?
