Title: Coffee Break
Name: Henrik Lindström
Country: Sweden
Software: Maya, mental ray, Photoshop

Here's a simple image I made to practice on my lightning skills. I've used Final Gather + HDRI + Ambient Occlusion. Dof and some minor color correction made in Photoshop. The rose is just a paint effect. The tablecloth is made with maya's cloth function.
I'd like to hear some constructive critisicm please.

No crits about the light and modeling. The texture of the fabric and the DoF make it look like a toy and the comic is abit oversaturated imho.
Could you shwo a breakdown of the use of the AO pass and the rest of the lighting?

You're right, I think I've overdone the DOF. I wanted it to look a bit "childish" but not a toy.

Here's the AO: Link (http://files.upl.silentwhisper.net/upload7/kaffeoc.jpg)

There's just 3 other lights in the scene. One spot casting raytraced smooth shadows and 2 points that just help "fill" everything.

This works for me. :) I think it was the table cloth that sold it for me, soo nice!

Nice lighting, rendering and compositing. Nicely modeled cup and spoon...

The only thing that I noticed was the surface of the coffee which looks a bit flat/matte, I expected tiny bubbles but maybe it's the frothed milk that looks like a matte shine. The stool's construction maybe is a little weak/thin, did you use a reference? In that case I'll shut up ;) The ear of the cup also looks very thin.

Anyway this one goes in my bookmarks. :)

Thank you all for your comments. I only used a quick reference look for the stool so yeah a little more work could've been done there. The coffee surface was supposed to look like that but yeah, maybe too flat anyway.

Thanks. Sorry I don't have any wip pictures, this was such a quick and simple scene so it passed by me rather fast... If you have any questions or would like to see wires or anything I'll post them for you though.
