View Full Version : New Disney 3d commercials and C4D?
Anybody see the new disney 3d commercials with mickey, goofy and the gang? They are amazing, just like watching the old cartoons.
So you're probably thinking "Yeah they are cool, so what does this have to do with c4d?" right.
Well here's what.
How the heck can that be accomplised with c4d?
Please don't say deformers. I know that but how can all that be setup with deformers? Or is it full body morphs? Or both?
Maybe setting up the IK arms and legs with Bend, FFD, etc... deformers instead of bones? Oooh that's a good idea i gotta try that.

Oops i think i should have named this thread differnetly. I don't know which software the commercials were done in. My guess would be maya.
You can find some quick examples on http://www.spicycricket.com/ check out the demo reel. You'll see the disney animation in there. Sorry i don't have better links.
Kai, yup i tried the splineIK for the tube-like arms it works perfectly. But as you will see, especially with characters like "Genie" the whole body looks like it was drawn in 3D. Exactly like it looks in 2D and then they animated it, amazing.

Dan,
using other deformers in conjunction with bones is a common way to achieve
smoother animation.
A good example are the bat wings from Cactus Dan.
He used cloth here but you also could use a FDD with pla or pose mixer.
Bones with FFD dirven by posemixer and Xpresso is wonderful for muscles
see attachement.

Thanks sneaker, very inventive. If you have CDIK morph FFD's can be driven by bones with CD morph. Its pretty awesome.
Now that i look more at the link it does seem to just take advantage of the spline IK technique. Then seems to use FFD's to drive squash and stretch and other deformations. But to me it seems a little more complicated than that.

thanks,
unfortunately I don't have CDIK. I'm not doing CA very often, but I'll buy CDIK it as soon as
I'll have more time for CA.

By he way---They arent just commercials--the shows have been on TV for awhile now on the disney channel (if you have kids---you know these things :) )
Personally--I think its blasphemy and kind of "cheap"---but it does mean more work for 3d character animators--so thats good I guess.
You can also buy some ipod-ready episodes over at itunes.

Hey danb... seems for me that you are looking for the same effect like in this video http://downloads.alias.com/gcs/edu-mt_st_mod_rigging_sample.mov
If i'm right?...it could be of interest for you to look at the "Maya Techniques SuperToon DVD Bundle"
Ciao
