nope that would be too far fetched... i predict he'll just go on about how it's important for the users that apple charge them a premium for their once free products. (imovie etc).
if apple unveil a new machine it will be a low end one like a faster imac, or a newer tibook that's once again faster, but has even less useful ports and even less expandability...
...i should say that i'm a mac user beofre people start to flame me, i'm just going on past experience... and i'm hoping that i'm proved wrong. (though not about that video ipod, that being the main announcement would suck).

It would be awsome if it was like one of those mini dvd players with the little 6" screen that would play quicktime movies/divx/etc... like a handheld PVR.

Anyone checked out the Archos multimedia jukebox? Much cheaper than Ipod and can be used to watch divX movies (on the tiny display or by plugging it into your TV), unfortunately only 320x240 resolution. Not quite as stylish as the Ipod, though.

As a Mac-person, I do hope that it's something exciting and not another damn "i" app.

welli guess my cynicism was well founded and fairly accurate.
it looks like apple have forgotten about their professional power users... or perhaps they've just decided they can't compete with wintel... but they're going to loose out with their current pricing.
what a shame :/
what a load of ishite

No I doubt it. Usually they don't like to announce too much new stuff all at one time. With marketing at an event like this you want to announce what will get you the most amount of press that the general public will respond more too. Something like an 17" powerbook and iapps will get much more press/response then just another processor upgrade in their deskside boxes. Apple makes the most amount of money from their laptop line because they are a novelty and pull in the most amount of profit for them.
You wait till more proffesional conferences(macdev, siggraph, NAB, etc..) to announce more proffessional apps/hardware or just special satilite events.
They will probably announce new machines in like february(They did that last year a month after macworld sanfran).

i think the whole "year of the notebook" thing kinda made me a little edgy, i hope you're right. i just don't see there being anything signifigant coming from apple in the very near future.
if they can make it through this year... well the trouble is they may, but they just might not have any of their professional graphics users left by the time they can start being competitive again.
one thing i have to ask... why do the poeple cheer pointless things all the time there? i mean, "hey, we're going to charge you for something that was free!" *que applause*, and "look at this shareware stuff we've got, if you're really bored on the train home you can spend your time dicking around with this, it's gotta bemore fun that solitaire!" *cheers*... it's like innapropriate laughing but en masse... very strange... or is this what's know as the Steve Jobs Effect?

It's a smarter move than trying to focus on getting destroyed by AMD/Intel + Linux/Windows. The laptop and the "appliance" are the next high-volume markets, and right no NO ONE owns them.
Ergo, they are ripe for the picking... and right up Apple's alley.

If they are to last that long, they'll have to start rethinking their business. Well, to clarify that, I'm pretty sure they'll last the year; I was referring to lasting long enough to be competitive. That could take a lot longer than a year.

I've often wondered the same thing... every year these keynotes seem more and more like cult gatherings...

an iPod that could play QuickTime movies would be cool. Dvix on a Mac is a joke, you cann't even encode dvix in a Mac. Support is getting better but I'll stick with QT. It is hassle free. Actually I think there are better codecs out there than dvix, it's file size is small ok, but the quality and playback sucks.
my opinion.

Because they are. I used and grew up on Apple. From 1978 till 1990. Why did I switch? Cause I didn't want to drink the poison gatorade.
Pricing is foremost. Just oo damn expensive for something that does NOT work better than windows (just as good better in some areas, worse in others).
And of course the constant windows bashing. No need to buy a product that is touted in Ads as being the better of the choices. Show me how it is better, don't tell me to be a sheep.
Anyway, I digress.
