You got a good looking model. He looks grumpy or maybe a bit irritated. I thought monks are peace-loving. Then again, they do kick ass on kung-fu movies. Just Kidding!

Very good modeling! WOW.

I thought monks are peace-loving.

They're still people deep down aren't they? I'm liking the look of this. The expression is solemn.

hey guys, thanks a lot for the comments, i really appreciate it.

@bmendoza
Then again, they do kick ass on kung-fu movies. Just Kidding!

lol yeah, some do i guess, but this one is more a peaceful guy. i wanted to
give him a kind of "serious" expression, because it fits more to the idea i
have in mind for the final image.

@D3STROYER
what ethnicity are you trying to go for??
good question, actually i'm not sure. i guess it's up to your imagination.
maybe we'll see in the end.

@Jordan_Cat
thanks.

@theguffman
there's already a wire in my first post (right side).

@Flying-Hawk
thank you. well, i still have to finish my soldier, some day.

@SUS
hey Ramsi, thanks for taking a look.
i hope to see some new stuff of you soon.

@RedFish
thank you man, i love your work, always great inspiration.

ok, so here's a little update. while modeling the rest of him, i also
started with the texturing. this is a first testrendering without hairs:

http://img87.imageshack.us/img87/3600/monkheadfss34gw.jpg

and a tiny update on the modeling:

@Alex Stratulat
thank you.
i love your works, especially Eva. :thumbsup:

@mp5
thanks.

@Archvilell
yeah, i'm going for a full body, hopefully in the next update i can show the rest of him.

@JGomez3d
thanks man. i haven't seen dune as a series yet, but i guess i should take a look at it. :)

@Kickflipkid687
thanks.
not sure about the color yet, but i actually thought of something more traditional.

@machuca
thanks man. i was inspired by a movie i saw some months ago, it's called "luther", don't know if someone knows this movie. but shortly i saw the trailer of assassins creed, really awesome!

so, here's a little update. i reworked the head a bit in Zbrush, i also redone the uvs, but there are still some spots where i have to fix it. hair is only a texture at the moment, but i hope i can add some "real" hairs later on. this rendering is a ZBrush rendering, so theres no perspective.

C&C are very welcome

cheers,
dean

good works D-E-A-N, great update, the modeling and texturing is really good. The only thing that bother me a litle bit is the ear, (the part inside).
but :thumbsup:
I hope we will see him with some nice hair :)

Kurosaki Ichigo
06-13-2006, 11:19 PM
I love the model. I just hate his huge "freckle" marks. They are all just in one perticular spot. Is he evil? If so, evil characters, if close to human usually have near perfect faces. Take Sephiroth from FF : AC. He didn't have any blemishes or face marks. Anyways it's up to you. I personally would remove them. Or perhaps scatter them around.

ChrisCast
06-13-2006, 11:53 PM
I personally like the freckles, adds a small touch of realism to his face. btw, how are you modeling the hood/robe? that`s some really awesome cloth modeling there. keep up the good work!

great modelling so far no crits there, looks like your texturing in the ear doesnt line up with the actual modolling. a small adjustment on the uv should sort that tho. guessing you got your textures from somewhere like 3d.sk, they look really nice and are well mapped.

Looking forward to the end result :)

Squash-n-Stretch

I love the ear. I never really see good 3D ears. The rest is also really good, wish I had that understanding of Z-Brush.

This model looks great. Did you model the Hood piece or use Dynamics?

D-E-A-N
07-28-2006, 03:13 PM
hey guys, sorry for my late reply, i was really busy lately. :blush:

@dt3d
thanks man. i'm working on the hair, i hope i can show some shots soon. but know what, i actually realized on my first tests, that his hood covers the upper part of the head so much, so you actually won't see much of the hair in the end. maybe i've to change the hood a bit or just leave him without hair. :D

@Kurosaki Ichigo
thanks. i'll work on the diffuse map later on when doing some MR test renders with the FSS, so i'll keep that in mind.

@ChrisCast
thank you. the cloth modeling is all box modeling, blocking out the shape and then adding more and more detail to it.

@Jordan_Cat, tbb519519
thank you guys.

@knowlesmark5
yeah, i build this map out of several photos from 3D.sk and retouched it in PS, but i still need to work on it a lot for the final rendering.

@Squash-n-Stretch
thank you.

@cg219
all the cloth was modeled without any use of dynamics, i guess my workstation would be too slow for such things. :)

finally i had the time get back to this model and to bring up a little update, i fixed some of the uv problems and also worked a bit further on the cloth modeling.

would be great to get some crits and comments on that. :)

here's the Zbrush testrendering with only the diffuse map. so no FSS and no perspective distorsion.

Wow, this really do looks good. images/icons/icon13.gif It kinda reminds me of Lucien Lachance, from the Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion (don't know if you're familiar with him). Are you using max? And are you using reactor for clothing?

mikkamakka
07-28-2006, 07:03 PM
First of all - great work, really nice and clean modeling! some things you could maybe improve - the creases on the arm of the robe dont seem to get attracted by gravity, and maybe the robe is too short compared to the arms (or his legs will stick out a bit). Appart from that i think its very nicely done, i cant wait to see it finished! :thumbsup: Keep it up!

Kurosaki Ichigo
07-31-2006, 01:08 PM
I also agree, I think this guy would look better bald, or perhaps with long hsir indicating he isn't "goody two shoes". It we be cool if he is like this sword wielding mage guy.

I guess what I like about your model is that it's so different from what everyone else is doing. The face texture is coming along nicely. Right now he looks a bit on the dark side. Are you planning on making him look evil in nature?

By the way nice modeling on the robe. The rope looks really good as well.

08-07-2006, 07:15 PM
hey guys, thanks a lot for all the replies, i really appreciate it. :)

i'm glad you like the cloth modeling. actually that's the reason why i chose this kind of "simple" character, because i wanted to practice some cloth modeling which i haven't done much before.

@RedXR
thank you. i'll post some texturing tests soon.

@LauLau
thanks man.
actually i'm not familiar with Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, but maybe i should do.
for modeling i'm using XSI. i didn't use any cloth simulation if this is what you wanted to know, because i don't know what "reactor" is, but it sounds like some sort of cloth simulation or dynamics?

@Bogey
thank you. i'll see what i can fix. at the beginning i made a test how it would look like if the legs stick out a bit, but somehow it looked kinda funny, so i decided to keep the robe longer, as it would cover the whole legs, which i thought, adds a bit more mystical mood to him. but you're right, maybe i should give the robe a bit more lenght, thanks for the hints.
BTW, great sketches. :)

@Lamster
hehe really? that would be really funny i guess. :D

@Vimmy
thank you.

@Haz-Mat
thanks. yeah you're right, most of the hairs will be covered by the hood i guess. for the shaved head, well i guess thats more a kind of shaolin monk you mean, the ones who believe in buddah etc.
mine is more western with a more heroic face, not the classical wise old guy type of monk. :)

@Miriam
thank you. i'll post some texture updates soon.

@bradjames
thank you man. here's a wire of the model, just simple poly modeling:

http://img465.imageshack.us/img465/5159/monkwire2li5.jpg

@Kurosaki Ichigo
yeah, maybe i should try to give him long hair, good idea. only problem is my slow workstation, rendering short hair already took forever, so we'll see if my machine can handle it. :D

@JacquesD
thanks a lot for your comment Jacques, i really appreciate it. your works are always a big inspiration and i learnt so much through it, so thanks a lot for taking a look at my little project. :)

@RedFish
thanks man, i'm glad you like it. if i have enough time, i'll try to make also a game-res version of him in the end. i've never done this before, so i thought this kind of simple character would be a good start to learn. maybe i'll need some advice from the master himself when it comes to this process. :D

@OptimusDinkus
thank you.
by the way, nice work on your Crab. :)

@kenwtoney
thanks man. for now i actually don't want him to be on the dark side, but thats a nice idea. maybe i'll do different versions in the end if i have enough time.

@ASaarnak
thank you for the comment.

@leishman
thanks. i hope i can post some updates soon, also with real hair and eyes.

@collings
hey mate, thanks a lot for taking a look.

LauLau

i didn't use any cloth simulation if this is what you wanted to know, because i don't know what "reactor" is, but it sounds like some sort of cloth simulation or dynamics?

Reactor is a (standard included) plug-in for 3DS max, it has a Cloth-option for real-time physics for clothes. Very handy :).

@leishman
thanks man for the links. it's always good to have many ref pics.
for my monk, i'm not going for an "asian" type of (shaolin) monk, but however, good to see these pics, thanks. :)

here's a small update on the texturing:

i worked on the MR skin shader and also made some tests with the hair (although perhaps they will not be visible in the end). the lighting will be different in the final image, right now it's kinda steadily just for testing the skin shader.

what you guys think? :)

about the cloth modeling, well most of the time i just use box modeling technique, so actually it's nothing special to show, but to give you a little idea of how this looks like, i made a short "timelapse" based on some screenshots:

http://img149.imageshack.us/img149/8483/clothmodelingexampleab8.gif

your model is looking realy nice and clean, a quick comment on the cloth.
Looking at your last render, the robe section around his legs, has a scale issue. The bump on that section seems too spread apart, and conflicts with the robe around the upper region.

CoryCosper
08-24-2006, 04:54 PM

Did you plan modeling an environement?

animalunae
08-29-2006, 10:48 AM
Cloth topology is very nicely done, there's something about the shape of the head that bugs me, I'd push the chin in a bit, but hell, people come in all forms, so it's perfectly acceptable to do it like your model. The eyes look dead though in your last render, perhaps increase the intensity of the reflection. It also appears that he's wearing too much make-up, I'd tweak the red on the lips a tiny bit.

Nevertheless; cool!
