Wow! So there we have the first 3D app to receive an Oscar!
Lets hope this award will give the guys at AW that extra motivation to develop new breakthrough tools for Maya.

Congrats.

>>Wow! So there we have the first 3D app to receive an Oscar!

No, many other companies have won an oscar in the past for 3d software(A/w has won 3-5 times for PA, Advanced Visualizer, Dynamation, couple other things), also pixar has won a couple times(for prman), Softimage(for soft3d), Sidefx(for Prisms), Paraform(for the paraform 3d software).

Now that you mention Prisms, there's also an interesting entry in the news release under
SCIENTIFIC AND ENGINEERING AWARDS (Academy Plaque):
- Mark Elendt, Paul Breslin, Greg Hermanovic and Kim Davidson for their continued development of the procedural modeling and animation components of their Prisms program, as exemplified in the Houdini software package.

Even if I don't use Maya I think that Alias|wavefront should thank all the Maya users out there, I think they've been the most important developing team for them ;)

I wonder who the recipient will be.
A lot of the folks responsible for the original Maya integration of technologies from Alias, Wavefront and other companies seem to have left A|W.

Softimage got the Oscar in 1998:

and other companies got it too, like SideFX and Pixar.
Also note that Mental Images gets this year an Oscar for the development of Mental Ray.

Shit.
So maya turns out to be one of the last 3D apps to receive an Oscar. And with the resign of Bill Buxton the motivation thing turns also out to be a misstatement. :thumbsdow

I think Maya actually is the first 3D modeling and animation software to win an Oscar (Merit Award), Oscar being the little statue. Renderman won an Oscar as well previously, making it the first Renderer. Every other program (SI, Houdini) has won Plaques and/or Certificates.

Thanks to everyone who has sent their regards for this most important recognition of Maya. Many of us here at A|W date back not only to the birth of Maya but to earlier generations of 3D software here and at other companies. We have received many awards over our careers but a statuette is such an honor that we are each humbled by it. Somebody echoed here on CGTALK what we ourselves were talking about today in the hallway here at A|W - this is really a tribute to the customers that use Maya.

No, Wavefront Advanced Visualizer was the first full 3d app to win an oscar in 97.

Woops

PA and Advanced Visualizer both won in 97.

My point was those aren't Oscars. They are Plaques. The Oscar is the actual little golden man statue. The Scientific(Plaque) and Achievement(Certificate) are a big deal, don't get me wrong, but getting that little gold statue is a Huge deal. Pixar got one for Renderman, and now AW gets one for Maya, being the first animation program to actually win an Oscar. HUGE deal. Congrats.
