hello, i'm just finishing up the pre-production and about to start the animation for a short i'm working on for my graduation project. i have three months left to complete the short for the school "end-of-the-year happening", and i hope i'll make it in time and wont have to submmit it after that time period.

the short is called "Deadline" (as mentioned in the title). i've just found out a few days ago about a short made by aardman called "the deadline". my short has nothing (exept the admiration i i've got for aardman's films) with there movie. i even got a copy of there short to make sure its not about the same subject.. :D

the short has one character (actually two but only one visible on screen). the main character is a 40 year old clerk who is very lazy.

in this thread i'll start with posting some modeling/texturing/rendering work for now and later some animations. i'm working with 3dsmax 8. i hope people here can give me some comments so i could improve in any way during the creation of the short.

Hey Itay....looks like an interesting project. Looking forward to seeing some storyboards/animation passes. I really like your character idea. Maybe hunching his shoulders over more would portray more 'laziness'... How are you planning on doing the hair?

hey skyboysky thanks for your comments. about the shoulders i think i'll try doing that in the animation. i know i want him to walk like a lazy person so i'll do a walk cycle test soon and then see what i can do with the shoulders.
and about the hair - i've modeled it trying to get a more cartoon look then the look in the drawing that was more detailed hair. maybe during the rigging i'll add a control to the curl in curl above his eye and maybe animate it when he walks.

looks good! some ideas:

since the eyes are so small and beady, maybe the eyebrows could be bigger...just to accentuate the animation of the eyes. Are you going to add ears? I think the sideburns would look more like sideburns if you added some little ears... the layered hair in the back is kind weird, in my opinion.

i'll try adding ears and the thicker eyebrows and see how it goes. i'm just getting used to
seeing the character (btw his name is Will) in 3d...some of the design choices i made in 2d work and some dont of course. the beady eyes really work funny i've tried animating them using simple Z axis scale and the blinking works very nice.
i think that when the sideburns are whiter then the rest of the hair then they look more like sideburns. i'll post more updates today i'm still busy with the animatics so i'm still not 100% working on the 3d yet.

i hope more people will comment as i post more

hey, i've got some time to continue working on modeling and testing to stuff in 3d.
here are the objects i've modeled for the short. and the updated character with new ears, 3 fingers instead of 4 and other small updates i cant remember right now.

dude! looking really cool! I donīt understand why nobody else is commenting on this.

I think the telephone model is great. I love the style. I that maybe the back of the chair could be even taller, and the walls of his cubicle could be MUCH taller...very very exaggerated. What do you think? Without knowing the story of your short, itīs difficult to crit on style and story.....

thanks skyboysky i appreciate your comments they help me a lot along with the comments i get from my teachers and people in my class. i have no idea why the other people viewing the thread arent saying anything:hmm:.
about the design i guees i do need to exaggerate some objects more, i always stop myself when it come to exaggerating drawings and designs more., i'll see what i can do.

the short is a comedy with a surprising twist in the end. the story of the short is about a lazy clerk which does nothing all day but eating, sleeping and stuff like that. in the begining of the short his boss shouts at him. he shuts his boss's door and goes to his cubicle. from this point the story is told via the calendar on the wall. the camera pans throuh the days of the months showing the clerk doing nothing in funny situations (while the paper work piles up around him). then he notices he has a deadline till tomorrow. and i wont tell what happens next cause dont want to spoil the end.

when it comes to style of the whole movie i designed the character and the objects he uses but there wont be a real office around him. just a clear white/gray backgroung (maybe with some fog on the ground). there is a door at one side and the cubicle at the other side with the long white telephone line connecting between them.

i'll post some storyboard drawings soon for you to see.

the blinking works good... I think the key to the eyes will be the eyebrows. I see you made them bigger.

One question, on his belly, there is a line across his shirt. Why?

One other thing I noticed, just to be really annoying, is that while everything in the character is exaggerated and stylized, his shoes are perfectly realistic. What do you think about doing something to stylize them too? Maybe just widening the toes would work...or making them even more narrow and smaller. I donīt know...just an idea.

Hey, I'm back ;)

skyboysky - yes I've made the eyebrows bigger like you said. I've also got rid of that line in the shirt. It looked nice in the original character design but it doesn't make any sense in 3d..Too bad. And about the shoes, I've got some comments about them at school also. I've made them a bit more cartoonish, tell me what you think. Thanks.

well I've been working on the character's rig and skinning. Rigging went pretty smooth and quick but I didn't know skinning can be such a pain:argh:.
Anyway I've got the skin to work fine after tweaking it a lot (I even started over once after a day of work just to get it right). Here is a test of the rig and skin to see how the mesh deforms in a few poses (not much animation here yet. sorry :) ).

Hey, partner in the "Cookie Shop" project! haha =D

Man, I'm very impressed with your work! Your style is very cool! Congratulations!

The only suggestions about your good work are:

- about the blinking test, since the eyes have a simpler design, I'd recommend another test with some anticipation. Maybe some quick "wider opening" before closing and after the atual opening until it rests in the final position.

- about the walk-cycle: I know thatīs not time for this yet, but would you put some "bouncing" in his belly? By the way, I think the second walk-cycle is more in the mood of the character.. =D

I'm (as you) looking forward to see updates and the final work. Very good!

Hey VirgilioVasconcelos thanks for the cookie:D. I think that people should start commenting more on each thread and not just download the file, watch it and move on to the next thread. And for some reason it happens more on the "WIP/Critique: Animation" forum then other forums. Maybe because it takes more time to critique animation shots. :shrug:

as to your suggestions - I think the blinking do need some more movements. I'll try to test them again. And about the walkcycle- i really want to add some movement to the belly but i couldn't find a way to do that. i need a 3dsmax expert to help me with that. i'll try to figure something out. and yes, the second walkcycle is what I'll use in the short. the first on is just a regular walk test i wont use.

WOW MAN!!! Lovely work Itay!!! Iīm watching it from start!! It is amazing!!! now I see the whole process to make a character? coul you prepare a tutorial or at least tell me where can I found a good one that show me how to do all do does???!!! It is a very nice character!!! I like it very much!!!

How do you make to move the tie so reallistic?!!

Hi, I thought I'd drop a crit on your walk cycle,

I like the motion alot! lots of subtle motion there,
and I like his belly movement especially,

but the feet bother me alot,
he's not picking up his toes and bending his feet in a natural way,
you've got to get that "roll" of the foot in there right, even though he's an oddly shaped character.

kpi - thank you! i'm happy you like it. the character wasnt very hard to model. i use box modeling method in 3dsmax. there a lot of tutorials on the web that teach that. i dont have the time right now to make one myself but after i'll finish the project i'd be happy to.
the best box modeling tutorial for character i know thats free online is on www.3dbuzz.com (http://www.3dbuzz.com)
just register and download their videos (parts 4 and 5 - the alien head and body modeling).
and there are a few good cahracter modeling tutorials over at 3dtotal.com


about the tie movment its simple rig the has 3 bones and every bone drags after the other during the animation to creat like a Tail effect.

i'll post the blocking of the scene i'm working on soon.

hey everyone now i really need some help and comments cause i'm working on the first scene and i'm really not sure about the timing and acting. the scene has the main character walking out of his boss's office (there's no sound in this file but in the final short you can hear the boss shouting in the background). the boss shuts the door on the character. that surprises the character that looks back at the door surprised and then walks away with indifference.

Hi,

I haven't been following your thread so i dunno if you've mentioned anything about the personality of this char. But here are my observations:

- His walk is too slow i feel and it looks like his feet are stomping. It's a tricky one cos the chars legs are really short. What i suggest is making a really cartoony walk....almost make him sorta "shuffle" his feet and i think by exaggerating the belly flopping it would help sell that the char has weight.
- After the door shuts i think the char turns way too much. I don't think he would do that if he was indifferent. I think it would work better if he just raised his head slightly at an angle and shifted his eyes towards the door.

I love the squash and stretch you have though! Keep at it! :)

HI Itay! I dont read the above post to say what I think without being influenced... I dont know nothing about the concepts of animation (beware)...

The only thing I see bad is that passing through that door takes too much time... dunno If the steps are too little or if the feets are sliding or something... but that is the feel I have...

I love this character!!!

petertan - thanks for your comments they are very useful. i'll try to improve he's walk and post an update soon. and i think your right about him turning too much after the door shuts, i'll fix that also.
i didn't say much about the character's personality or his background. here is some info about him that i wrote down:

his name his will, he is 42 year old.
works as a file clerk for 15 years in a big bank.
goes to work everyday from 8:00am till 5:30pm.
he is single. has a small apartment.
he's cat and 2 birds died because he forgot to feed them.
likes watching exercising programs on TV while eating junk food and sleeping.
he is indifferent and lazy.
he acts stupid but he is pretty clever. he knows he can do much better then this lame job but he also knows that this job fits he's lazy lifestyle perfectly.
he's only ambition in life is to get to pension.

kpi - thanks. as i wrote to petertan i'll try to improve the walk that takes too long.

sorry i didnt have time to post updates here i've been working on the animation of the different scenes and i hope i'll finish the short in time.
i still need some help with the walkcycle because i have a few shots where the character just walks from the door to her desk. i need the walk to look lazy and heavy.
