View Full Version : attaching a camera to a path
baxxy 01-06-2003, 03:01 PM Hi
Been having trouble with this for weeks but have not been able to solve it.
I have a camera attached to a dummy which is constrained to a path.
This is for a virtual fly through of an environment but i am having trouble making the camera look smooth and flowing, as it currently seems to jerk along when it reaches a new vertex in the path.
I have no web space to upload to but i have stripped the max 5 file of all materials and geometry and so is only 50k if someone thinks they could help with this problem.
Any help here would be appreciated

Are the path vertices corners or are they smooth. If the latter you may want to tweak the pathing to get rid of the jerkiness. Not sure this is what you want. Are there points in the fly through when the camera must stop?

Hi
The vertices are all set to smooth but it still jerks a little when it reaches a new segment.
The camera does not stop either as it follows the path to the end.
I do not know where i am going wrong here as i am sure i have set all the right paremeters.
not sure I'll be able to help (I already experience trouble like that)
but you can send it to me if you still need ...

try setting the interpolation of the spline to a higher value... or try adaptive.... might solve some of your problems...

I once had a similar problem and it turned out to be a scale problem!!! go figure...
The scene scale was too small, so 3dsmax couldn't place the camera keyframes along the spline, it would place them on and off in order to keep a minimum distance between them.
I'm not sure it's the same problem, but give it a try.

hi
ive tried all these already without luck.
does anyone else fancy having a look at this as i am getting desparately close to my deadline!
If you PM your email then i can send a max 5 file demonstrating my problem

Done.
OK I receive your file ....
first I notice that you use a spline for the path.
From my experience, I had to animate a lot of plane for a TV serie,
I always use a NURB path ... to avoid this exact pb.
So, I convert your spline in nurbs, delete a few CVs, and it was as smooth as desired ....
There is maybe an other way, cause I didn't check your controler ... params ...
But this trick Works .... and I think you can remember that :
Path = nurbs ....
I hope it will help you, It took my 2 min to correct your anim, so if you have any trouble ... ask me again ... I think it is the solution.
Bye...
I forget to tell you ...
the main pb was at the corner, that's where you need to delete one CV .... you will recognise it.
but if you still have trouble, try to reparam the curve and/or to rebuild it ... its two fonction of the nurbs curve sub/object level
other solution : re-create the path with CVs ...
I think that's all this time ...
ciao !
and tell me if it works fine.

wow!!!:bounce:
Thanks a millon, you wouldn't believe how long this has bothered me.
I ended up scrapping the spline path and made a CV curve instead.
It works like a charm!
I had always heard nurbs were useless in max and so have stayed clear of them, but this is one instance where Nurbs was the only answer.
thanks again

Thanks CiF!
You just solved a major headache for me too.

did you checked "constant speed" in path constrain ? I've also encountered this with fly through on a spline, and constant speed resolved it. You can then, adjust your needed acceleration in timeline.
