Title: Peugeot 307 TV commercial
Name: Stefano Oggeri
Software: Maya, mental ray
Just a few frames out of our latest TV commercial for Peugeot: a short full-CG story about two cars playing Pong in a desert...
Everything is CG (well, except for the guys at the end: they've been shot on 35mm film): on a special note, the cars have been modeled over a 3D point cloud of the real cars, which we obtained through laser scanning.
A little bit of cooking in Maya with some custom Mentalray shaders...
The gamme might be slightly off, since these images are intended for TV projection.
Hope you like them :-)
The full movie can be seen here: http://www.edenlab.com/downloads/peugeot/australian_02.mov
Besides, you might already have seen something of this commercial: the digital Kangaroo realized by Mauro Baldissera, which you can see at:

Is there a video that we can download?

This is really perfect. I like the dusty textures.
5 Stars! You deserve it!

thanks for your appreciation. I've uploaded a compressed quicktime of the commercial here:
I'm having a bit of trouble hooking the correct gamma settings when creating H264 videos, so I corrected it by eye hoping the movie will not look too washed-out or wrong. Lemme know if you can see it correctly ;)
We've been working in 4 on this video (strictly speaking only about Edenlab: other artists have been involved on different levels and from different agencies. One for all: Franco Tassi, the director. And many others.). Edenlab carried more or less all the 3D for this video (well, the Kangaroo was not ours ;) ), and my personal role has been shading, lighting and rendering all the environments and the cars.

05-10-2006, 09:13 PM
perfect rendering !!
the only thing that is a little strange is the dirt on the "camera " at 11 secondes.
05-13-2006, 08:54 AM
When I first saw the commercial on TV,I thought the cars were real.Awesome work,3 stars
05-16-2006, 04:02 AM

05-16-2006, 04:24 AM
Wow! That's great. Very nice Stefano is a fantastic work. I like the concept and the realization. Congratulation.
Complimenti davvero Stefano! E' un lavoro eccezzionale.
(Mi piacerebbe lavorare per prodotti del genere specialmente a Torino.)

Nice job! I have a question, why was the car digitally scanned when there is almost certainly CAD data somewhere for the cars? I used to have to model vehicles based on CAD files, and while it's cumbersome it would be at least as difficult as modeling from scanned models. I'm assuming CAD was originally used in the car's design of couse, although I don't know for sure.

Awesome concept for a commerical - and executed wonderfully!
05-16-2006, 05:33 AM
wow it is really amazing.. i couldn't believe "everything" is CG
only one thing... the movements of cars look a little "toony" to me. i am not sure why. maybe because they are so fast at breaking. they can stop when they want but that was the point of the commercial i guess :)
i always liked commercials of peugeot :)
05-16-2006, 06:25 AM
wooowww..... great render.......
05-16-2006, 07:06 AM
This definitely gets 5-stars from me. Everything about this is simply excellent... and if I was forced to niggle a critique, I'd be extremely hard pressed. In fact the only thing I can even imagine to criticize is the size of the "cracks" or the distances between them on the ground textures.
Wonderful work... truly inspirational!
Cheers! — Möe

Well its a nice commercial but I don't know how everyone could say its perfect... For one thing, the tennis ball is at a different scale in practically every shot. In the opening shot its the size of a large beach ball, other shots - its small as a realistic tennis ball. But then in the next shot its as big as a basketball. Maybe it was done this way to be able to see it, but definately its not "realistic". The shot at the end definately needs a little color correction between the characters, the car, and the scenery... they all stick out as having different lighting. The animation was also pretty mediocre - the powersliding didn't work at all, as they seemed to stop on a dime rather than keep moving that extra inch of overshoot.
It was a nice short, but i wouldn't say perfect =\ (don't get me wrong I still like it though. I'm just making a counter argument to those saying its perfect, not really a reflection on the quality of the short).

WOW! Really nice work!
Fa piacere vedere che anche in Italia esistono aziende di produzione che fanno lavori di questo livello. Davvero complimentoni!
05-16-2006, 11:37 AM
:D cool ad man!
Really nice work!
One thing thou, not a crit, it's probably just me, but the shadow being casted by the girl player on the car's chasis seems odd to me? Donno what's wrong with that, as I said, it might be just me, but still, it just doesn't look right somehow
Anyways, http://forums.cgsociety.org/images/rating/rating_5.gif from me!
05-16-2006, 11:43 AM
professional, professional, great work man:eek:

What are you using for post production?
Great material! Thanks for sharing that.
Just couldn´t see the movie, don´t know why all my CGSociety quicktime dwlds are bugged by a 'buffer overflow' error, if someone knows why please tell me.

Care to talk about the exterior lighting setup? GI/FG/HDRI? I really like the dirt on the cars too, looks great.
Very nice work. I loved it!

05-18-2006, 03:14 AM
great stuff man the cars are preety nice. i have a question. which part of the commercial did you work on?
05-18-2006, 09:55 AM
Thanx for all the positive comments! ;) Well, not much to say about the lighting setup: we used no FG nor GI: basically all the shading has been made using a few custom MR shaders we wrote. They're faster and much more predictable than the aforementioned techniques.
There is some HDRI, but it is there basically to spice up the reflections.
Then a mix of hand painted and procedural textues.
Oh, and then passes: some cuts contains as many as 20 different passes.
We've been working on all the computergraphics for the commercial. That means modeling, texturing and lighting the environment and shading and lighting the cars.
And animating of course.
The kangaroo is the only thing we did not create.
Ah, we also had to come up with some quick solution for the dust clouds since, well, we were left with only a few hours before the deadline and we still had not them (that's why I think they're a bit the weak part of the piece) :) .
Most of the compositing is ours too, with some useful help from Franco Tassi.
That's it :)
05-18-2006, 10:37 AM
thanks for the info!
Well done, i think its fantastic!
05-18-2006, 05:29 PM
great stuff ... . wow amazing shots . But I dont like the compostion in the end of shot . I mean two real guys . But all of other parts are so cool . goodluck ... .
Ciao Stefano Oggeri. Come e?.
:bounce: Bella Torino.
05-19-2006, 09:14 AM
IED? No, nothing related to that: TD=Technical Director. I take care of shading and lighting stuff. Then I run around cursing when I need to fit everything in ram at rendertime :)
The only contact I had with IED has been a few years ago during their end-of-courses party: I was the one running around stealing sushi and wine :D
Hi boonet. I see.
I wish you the best in Torino.
06-05-2006, 12:28 PM
I'm interested to know your 'last minute' approach to the dust clouds. Did you use fluids at all?

thanks for your appreciation. I've uploaded a compressed quicktime of the commercial here:
I cant watch the movie. The link is wrong!
09-25-2006, 09:23 AM
well, first of all, let me say it's amazing having been included in the CG Choice gallery: sure this is a great honor and reward for our work! About the link being broken: true, true. We've been doing some maintenance here and there on our website, but will indeed manage to have it back ASAP.
Thank you all!
09-25-2006, 06:07 PM

Watched in TV, great job
09-26-2006, 09:49 PM
The highest level
...but i don't like the tyres on that last frame, the cars have stoped but the tyres look like they would still be moving (and yes the rims are still but i mean the tyres them selves, tho this might because my eyesight aint the best and the images aren't very big), but nice job non-the less! **** from me.
09-27-2006, 06:56 AM
You can make is better?
