I have a character that we reference in several scenes. The reference is animated in each of the scenes (no animation in the base character file). The external character file has several layers to help sort the bones, helpers, geometry, etc. Here's the problem: If I animate the character reference, and then toggle the visibility of its layers (say, turn on the namespace:bones layers), Maya stops updating the character animation. When you press play, you can't see any animation.
The keyframes are still there. And if you move some of the helpers and then scrub, the character reference temporarily snaps to the closest keyframe, but the rig doesn't update past that.
Another behavior: If you select the root helper and scrub, the child helpers will update but only when you release the mouse. The skin and bones seem disconnected. All from changing a layer's visibility!
What is going on? It seems like the only thing that works is to not touch any of the layers' visibilities. That, and importing the character, which totally defeats the purpose of references. :banghead:
Using Maya 6.5 with standard bones/character node.
