View Full Version : Model messing up when smoothed or normals softened

The first problem i had was that some of the faces on my model started dissapearing randomly. Theyre still there but theyre invisible and do not render. The invisible faces aren't always the same but some of them become like this frequently (when i open the scene or use some tools/options).

This is what used to happen.

Someone suggested to export as an obj and import it into a new scene. It seemed to have worked but a new problem came up. Whenever i soften normals or i smooth my model gets all messed up.

Hey there,
When debugging this weird effects, it's often a result of your XForms becoming all screwy. Try collapsing your stack, apply a "Reset XForm" to the object (utilities tab), then collapse it again. This will basically recalculate the coordinates of faces/edges/vertices and fixes many weird display and smoothing problems that can occur.

Sometimes applying a "Reset XForm" to the object causes some normals to flip, fix these before you do your final collapse.

I sorta found what had gone wrong yet not really lol. turns out this has happened to a few students over the years when going from pc>mac>pc>mac and so forth. It smooths fine but still does that weird stuff when softened normals is applied. so I'm gonna give that a try thanks for the help really appreciate it.
