View Full Version : Deployable turret
JMcFly 05-08-2006, 10:55 PM Im modeling this turret for my 3D class at school. Its just the main gun section so far, but Imagine that it will unfold out of a cover (along with 3 others from the other directions) using the hinges. Im happy that I finally found out what made everyones renders look so good (skylight). For a long time I didnt know why everyone could make their models look like they have a flat (non shiny) texture to them, ya, im a noob. :( Any crits?

Looks nice so far:thumbsup: . But how will the turrets rotate/aim horizontally?

lol, I was just thinking of that........
Also, do you think I should even add any more detail to the turret itself (such as hoses/wires) or just keep it clean looking. Im not sure if those types of things would take away from it.

That would depend on the style you were going for. That said the more detail the better. Things like bullet chains, exit hols for the shells, and exhaust vents etc..
Think about the "personality" that you want this to take. Like is it very quiet and stealthy, or really loud and brutal. By giving it a personality it seems to help "me anyway", in coming up with ideas and the function. Sorry I am rambling.
Don't be afraid to try you can always hit delete!

A nice start but you should give more thought to how those articulated arms would work in the real world. At present the arm sections are merely sandwiched between the disc pieces, you should consider how such a joint would actually function, which bits are fixed to which and which bits rotate, also how is the rotation actually accomplished, a motor and cogs? hydraulic rams?
The main part of the turret is fine, the working parts can be concealed inside and the outer armour shouldn't need too much additional detail, military designers wouldn't put anything vital outside the armour where it could be damaged by enemy fire.
