"He's 49 now, and John Lasseter's life still revolves around great cartoons and cool automobiles — except now he's creating them. This summer, he'll be rolling out a combination of his two loves with Cars, the seventh film assembled by computer-animation hit factory Pixar. And soon, as an incoming chief creative officer at Disney, he'll be helping retool the company's entire 'toon outfit — but let's take his fast-track career one lap at a time, shall we? "

Animation doesn't need saving. It's doing just fine. I'm suprised that Entertainment Weekly would go with such a headline.

I'm not. It's Entertainment Weekly. Not exactly the Cahiers du Cinema of our time.

Maybe they meant save Disney Animation? For a lot of people animation is interchangable with Disney.
Branding at it's worst/best. Depending on your POV.

no...i personaly think that animation is going a wrong way,,,,most of animation studios these days are doing animation only because of MONEY.....cartoones like Shrek, are realy enjoyable and funny, but for how long can a child notice the jokes it did with movies like mission impossible???what i mean is,animation movies are becoming enjoyable for a short range of time, which will not make you enjoy watching it 10 or 20 years later, like what classical disney cartoones did.....
just see the recent cartoones, compare them to old ones.....then you'll see why they call him the savior of animation, cause you can enjoy most of his work at anytime.......

Personally I think Miyazaki is saving animation, could just be me though.

Personally, I don't care if anyone saves animation or not. Animation is an art form, it'll always be around.

The real question is: Who's saving bananas?

I mean...

Really.

All companies have always made movie for money.

The directors and writers though are probably doing it because they enjoy making movies. This is true of older movies as well as newer ones like Shrek.

Hear hear

Wiser words have never been spoken.

(Don't you hate it when you can't open the banana peel, and you end up mushing the top of it up? Or is that just me...I really stink at opening bananas.)

I think John Lasseter is doing amazing things, and seems like a great guy. But I feel like, lately, the press is going a bit far with putting him on a pedestal.

Quoted for agreement. I bet Lasseter would agree too. He's a huge fan of Miyazaki.

I find it funny that so few people realize that news companies are just in it for the dough. They aren't there to help you. Of course they're going to put a sensationalist title on there; they want your eyeballs and they'll do whatever it takes to get them.

It would make it easier if they would use more recognizable hype-speak, though, like "La55et3r SAvEs @n!mati0N!!212112!" Then you would realize it was just as valid as every other internet raving and just ignore it.

It's often much easier to open bananas from the bottom - just pinch the bottom, and it should open right up. Also, did you know that bananas can be divided lengthwise into three segments? It's pretty cool.

I guess I shouldn't focus entirely on bananas though - uh, I know a guy who's trying to bring 3d-like rigging to 2d animation. It's not cel shading either, it's very much focused on strokes and how they move. http://www.tweenmaker.com/

It's pretty cool. My wife actually eats them that way - sideways, by the segment. Scary. Let's hope someone does save bananas :(

correct, but in older cartoones, instead of searching to see WHAT SELLS,they searched for artistic matters too(i mean alot more).sure you've seen fantasia, sleeping beauty or bambi....and sure you know the diffrence of theire artistic level with most of todays works....and yes, they selled too....

as some one mentions miyazaki, his cartoones are always the toppest sellers in japan cinema history, and he knows that....but he care more for many other things that guys in hollywood dont....Shrek 3 and 4 are being made and they said maybe they make #5 too...lion king was perfect but what was the big deal for #2 and #3 ????....and thats what i call Bussiness, not Art.
