View Full Version : Tippmann A5 Paintball Gun
requiem2d 05-07-2006, 10:22 AM Alright, so I finally had a chance to UV & begin texturing last night. It's 2.5k (was 4k including unseen faces before), so if you see any faces missing, remember you won't see it from the 1P perspective. As some of you may know I've been texturing for a while but only began modeling recently, as usual however, I seek crit in both departments (although tex is still WIP).

Thanks in advance for any feedback :)

looks very good so far dude. nice detailing. where did you get the poly limits tho?? is this standard for a next gen shooter? what kind of texture res are you using?

Res is 1024 x 1024, took HL2 as a framework (so I'll still create a bump and spec). Is just for practice / portfolio though. Thanks for the feedback :)
Edit: another WIP

yea it looks great. just stik some sort of noise on the texture of the gun to finish off the matte metal. Maybe check the gun from an FPS view just to make sure it looks good from the most commonly viewed angle. Im thinking that the magazine for the paintballs is gonna get right in the way....

I have a good metal down which will serve as foundation for the normal map (still need to produce it, it's also what's really going to bring out the different materials).

I've done a few checks and it's similar to paintball games/mods, once I'm done with the texture at the back too I'll up a shot so you guys can judge. It will however take up a lot of the screen.
Thanks for the feedback, valid points :)

The model itself is a little wasteful in areas, and could stand to receive some further optimisation. However, I'm rather impressed by the skin so far. Any chance of showing us the flat, with perhaps a brief explanation of your technique? :)

I'll trade you some texturing goodies for some modeling optimisations info :D (j.k. I'll post my tex map later, no probs).

You're actually not too bad for efficient polygon usage, there are just a couple of areas that have unneccessary edges. A rule of thumb to remember is that if any edge doesn't add to the shape and form of the model, then you don't need it. The main parts that spring to mind are the section around the "Tippman" bit, and the foregrip. The latter could be ok, but it seems a little too dense from the pics you've shown. I would go into more depth, but I'm just lazy. ;)

I have the real thing and it's a PITA to use sights on it with that hopper (magazine).
My only comments would be that the front sight doesn't look as beefy as it should and the pin for the tombstone seems too high but that might just be me :p

Apologies for the delay, had to manage a mod release but that's done now, everyones happy, everyones playing :D Back to my personal project...
Here is the map I promised (still need to complete that hopper cap & original is 1024x1024):

And then here we have my first attempt at animation and I'm literally going crazy just trying to make a shoot & reload animation. My results are what I want, except they take the whole bezier / smooth flow thing way out of context. Anyway here's the hand positioning (with a downloadable CSS hand rig).

Thanks for taking the time to look/crit my work, always appreciated :D
i really like the smoothness, but the bullet holster looks unfinished ( are you still going on that?)
btw are you animating using jennifers or hav0cs rig?

Thanks, yes I still need to finish the hopper. Using Jennifers? Should I be using Havoc's?
Cheers
