wicked paintings samsonsreaper (especially the second one)!! so glad you decided to start a thread for them. i admire your style very much - really tight work..your handling of light and texture is really effective. Hoping to see more!

(By the way your WIP thread link is broken..)

lol, well your cgtalk profile thingy says you're from sweden. Heheh...

I think the interior you posted yesterday, and the seaside one are the best ones of the lot. I find that the attention to just light behavior adds way more than shapes etc. An eyeopener for me, because I want to carve out volumes when I do my stuff. I should try otherwise... :)

I's gonna be watchin'

:)

Wow I could learn a lot from you -- your attention to light and form is amazing - truly beautiful. I'm totally subscribing - would love to hear a little bit about how you do some of this and maybe how you learned?

Wow - nice WIP - your ability at textures blows my mind, the background trees/cliffs looked unbelievable. I agreed with some of the crits given on the final piece about the people in the piece, but even then - I like your concept.

Can't wait to see more finished works! :)

^^ I'm so jealous. I just haven't any CLUE how to do that cool, confident, concept art style.

I wish I did... maybe I could do all the crap that's rattling around my head if I could!

SamsonsReaper
05-11-2006, 02:09 AM
tutorials, fellow great artists, old masters, movies, photography are some of my inspirations http://www.leventep.com/Pics/1_Example/beast.jpg

Runecaster
05-11-2006, 03:41 AM
Inspiration isn't the problem - it's technique - I wouldn't even know how to paint like that - of course I have never tried either.

And why on earth would there be tutorials on concept art? It's... unifinished art, just meant to sketch out something in a basic way so you can finish it later, usually in another medium and/or resolution.

What I'm saying is that the confident brush strokes are what I lack. Since I've been doing this way less than a year (and I mean, from stick figures...) I just don't have the confident drawing ability to just toss down strokes... and I envy that.

It's all practice I'm sure - but it sure looks nice from the n00b side of things :)

This is amazing stuff, so much speed and liveliness in it! Do you plan to develop any of these in the future? And I agree with LM on the confident strokes; did you have any professional training or is this just the results of loads of practice? (and practice on what - grayscale? landscapes? figures? anatomy? etc.) Just wanting to know, as a beginner, how you got to this point. BTW the V for Vendetta one is my favourite, I like all the spanish passionate reds:).

SamsonsReaper
05-15-2006, 03:23 PM
Maladie:thanks, There is a few that i choose to develope further once in a while but none of these though.

Its all practice , with help from movies, cartoons, artists, landscapes, figures, poses, movements. I like to work with colors so its not so much greyscale.

05-15-2006, 03:51 PM
See, that's why this style is so cool, because not one line is wasted, it's there for a reason. I wouldn't be able to do anything like it in a million years.
This is killer stuff, man! Big fat thumbs up:thumbsup:!

BTW, love that colosseum pic, building looks so big and deep, and i like the colours in the first one on this page.

You said that you get inspired by "great artists" and "masters" and I'm getting inspired by you ;), cause you are same for me....
So many thoughts and stuff :S, but I guess I will never, ever be able to draw any of those....
Do you think there's a chance for a really newcomer with "not that much ( :) )" talent to become THAT good? Or even 1/4 of it?

Amazing work, thanks for posting it here. I should visit this forum more often, the only reason I ended up here is because they rejected some of my work for the finished gallery and I thought this is a good place as any to showcase it.

Anyways, great technique and depth in your work, I wish I was half as good.

I'm trying to make out the textures you've used in these last two. They look like rock... or dense trees, perhaps?

At any rate -- they look very, very good. I look up to the way you create such forms and mood with only a minimal use of brushstrokes.

I've been watching your progress at the Atlantis matte challenge, and it's impressive to say the least. Fantastic work.
A minor critique is that the architecture styles seem a little mixed (as of yesterday, at least, when I last checked).

About the last sketch: I see a distinct light outline around the threads he is holding... I am curious as to how you did this. By the way, I really like that simple background; it makes for a great lighting.

SamsonsReaper
07-23-2006, 11:01 AM
thanks you two :bounce:,

ah yeah i will work on merging the architectures together, about this last sketch, i use the sharpening tool on the threads.

eilidh

Hey man i've been looking through your threads really love your work, your use of texture and lighting is really effective, even when used to the minimum. I just love looking at each pic wondering what exactly it is i'm seeing, and i guess that's art, 50% the artist, 50% the viewer (making them work to understand what it is). very inspiring. good luck with the Atlantis contest :-)

- Dave.

SamsonsReaper
08-02-2006, 10:44 PM
thanks, nope its not a project.

I try to create my images with forced perspectives, and composing objects in them so it fills out spaces. Some times i get inspirrered by movies, the angles used in them, the whole feeeling of a composed storytelling image. I find a front shot is abit dull at times so hence i try twisting the perspective.

This one is getting dangerously close to Sparth territory, SR. I love it. Not to sure about the propeller at the front, but at least that stops it from looking like a Star Wars design.

Do you use a lot of color burn/ dodge strokes? I can't figure out how you get such contrasty marks! It does make your pieces very distinctive.

SamsonsReaper
08-22-2006, 11:25 PM

I never thought it to be possible, but it seems your work just keeps getting better! You have a very unique style and are an inspiration.

Can I ask if you found a job? Or are you still doing freelance work?

That is enough to keep you busy.

I am working on my Bachelors in Architecture. I go to school full time, work full time and still try and find time to pursue other passions (like 3d modeling, matte painting and sketching), basically anything to further my skills.

At first people started asking me if i can make some images, and basically thats how it all started .And now when i have time i do them.

Well that's what i call speed painting, one frame every 3 seconds http://forums.cgsociety.org/images/icons/icon10.gif hehe.

Shame about the lag, but it's watchable.

Vista! looks so shiny and slick looking http://forums.cgsociety.org/images/icons/icon7.gif wont work on mine http://forums.cgsociety.org/images/icons/icon9.gif

Really great to see the shapes evolve, when you created the original shape did you know what it was going to be, or indeed what shape it was going to be prior to painting it? like the highlights, were they just random strokes to develope a starting point or did you already know what they were going to be?

Strange i always imagined you had lots of really textured brushes, but you just seem to use the same basic brush all the time.

Cheers, i'm going to watch it a few times. Maybe another one in the future? http://forums.cgsociety.org/images/icons/icon11.gif I really think people would pay to see these paint tutorials, honestly making the exception of the lag they're very much like some of the Gnomon DVDs.

Cheers again - Dave.

SamsonsReaper
09-05-2006, 02:00 AM
Gord/everlite: thanks :)

in most cases its just random strokes that i start with, and once i know what shapes to go after i am confident enough to do highlights. In most cases i have a clear image of the whole concept about 5 mins into the painting.

about 80-90% of the speedpainting is painted with a hardedged brush, and if i see the need to texture i use the textured brushes. Also gradients with the softedged brush.

Once i have a faster computer i will make a better vid, and nooo lagging, i kind of feel disapointed that it lags....oh well

Gnomon... *drools* those guys are insanely good. Would be a dream come true to make ona of those dvds

everlite
09-05-2006, 02:20 AM
Seriously i think if you put together (how ever many you could fit) on a DVD people would pay, i would. Just set up a simple free payment system, i think quite a few people are subscribed to this thread so instant success i think http://forums.cgsociety.org/images/icons/icon13.gif

Yeah, shame about the lag, still watchable though, can see the layers and shapes building up.

Cheers - Dave.

This seems endless! still very amazing. My only suggestion would to try and create a theme or visual story through your images. One thing is been able to paint the above character but could you paint him from any direction in any pose, while still maintaining the same style? I think that could be a challenge :-)

Do you get paid for any of your work? you should.

Jack Shannon

Wow, I am abosolutly in love with your speed paints. Downloading the video as we speak. Also you should of won the matte painting contest in my opinion.

I like the last one. Everlite is spot on about the dvd, this is the stuff we need to learn imo, not all the high rez rendering and detailing stuff. I would definatly buy it!

I have a question.
Do you decide on the perspective and horizon before putting your random shapes down?

SamsonsReaper
09-09-2006, 07:54 PM
thanks guys! glad you like them

Everlite: yep i get paid :)

Jack: the first brushstrokes determine the lighdirection and subsequently the perspective. Its not always that i know what i want so i just scribble to get me started.

Good lighting on your work. May be in some places too many bright highlights - but it's your style. Nice. It doesn't bother me relly - I only wonder if some of the pix would be better off with less light flicks....

Anyways - love the work, think I've been admiring your sketchbook on conpcet art a longgg time ago. Gotta say thanks your processes and hope one day I will be better then you hehehehehe (no comparision), seriously love your subject matter and as Gord mentioned your compositions do kickass - loved that one where the guy is walking into the tunnel with the 7 lights. I love it, especially the robot design, but the setting is a little bare. It looks like an airport tarmac, but there's no way that thing's getting off the ground. Great job on the reflection in the shadow, by the way... very realistic treatment of light.

I think this one looks pretty cool, the bareness adds strength to the robot in my opinion.

Keep em coming.

I just created two sketches, it's not something i've ever really done but i felt inspired by your posts and thought i'd give em ago,

I'd be honoured by your feedback.

NR43: hehe havent read much material for it :)

everlite: thx man, the first one, you need to bring the object further, now its kind of melted with the bg, hard to read. Second image, tone down the dodge and think more where to put the highlights.

Your work is utterly fantastic!
Just everything about it screams excellence. Your confidence in your abilities shines through.
Some of your pieces confound the eye and brain; I know they're sketches but the light in some of them looks so real and natural.
