How the heck do you delete surfaces from a object file!? There seems to be no delete surface function in the surface editor?

I've got a final object file with loads of surfaces, most of which aren't being used.

I guess I could simply cut and paste them into a new object file but I've just spent ages naming all my layers...

Any help appreciated.

the old way was to close and reopen the file.

If you are trying to delete a surface name on the left in the list it will dissapear the next time you open the .obj file if there are no values attached to that surface name.

Example: Try this, Make a box and assign different colors to the sides of the box and name the surfaces accordingly. Select a surface and assign it to a different surface or Default surface. The surface name will still be in the list but if you save and close then reopen the file the surface name will be gone.

Hope I made sense.

Thanks guys!

Yep loading the model up again clears unused surfaces. :)

Would it have been that difficult to have included a delete surface button though Newtek!?

Although it might be useful, I've never really needed one. The inability to delete surfaces confused me the first time I noticed (same as you), but they disappear as soon as the object is reloaded. I much prefer the current setup to one where surfaces could disappear if they had no geometry assigned, which could result in a lot of work lost.

IMHO surfaces should remain regardless of whether polygons use it or not and they should be only deleted when user directly asked for it by clicking Delete Surface (preferably in pop-down context menu) or Cleanup Unused Surfaces..

Thinking about it, I have had to create geometry in the past solely to store scratch surfaces that I've been working on but haven't yet applied to the model. That's not ideal... Perhaps a delete surface button would make more sense. It's just one of those Lightwave's-way-of-doing-things that I've got used to.
