"Excalibur"

These are the rules:
* You have 35, (count them 35!) minutes to do your sketch. IF you go beyond the
assigned time limit , you have to post WHATEVER you have done after the time has
expired, along with the FINAL drawing.
* Also, I will add a new voting category, called THE FASTEST DRAW.
* Post only your FINAL piece on this thread, based on the topic on the thread.
* RESOLUTION : The image can have any aspect ratio up to 800 x 600
* They can be done on any medium.
* If you wish, you can add a brief text description about your piece.
* Only original compositions. No "tributes" or plagiarizing, unless is it an integral part of the challenge.
* The topics will be posted every day between 10:00 - 12:00 am US EST.
* The artist also has to post total length of time it took (Thanks Clanger for the idea) and program used.
* Only final pieces can be posted on the thread. They must have been done AFTER the topic has been announced.
* Any piece caught breaking the rules will be taken off the thread.
* The topics will be picked at random from the list on this thread
(The author will be given credit). So guys keep them coming.
*You can add multiple entries, but please dont post WIP (Unless you intend to update them). NEW RULE!
* Ill post ANOTHER thread to quantify and track WHO has participated the most on these threads.

Good luck

-Roberto

Just remember people, Excalibur is not the sword in the stone according to most legends. It is usally referred to as the sword the Lady of the Lake gives Arthur.

okey, it's a great story, but enough already.. I don't know the tale of camelot or whatever it's called, so pleeeeease get some new topics soon... a week of them is truly enough...

I agree, we've have too many Camelot topics. It's a great tale, but let's move on, shall we?

That should be cool. May I make a suggestion though? How about enlarging Arthur's eye a little? It seems very small compared to the woman's. Also His face seems relatively flat for a European native (Gaelic, Norse, whatever he was) - I might pronounce his nose a bit more if it were mine - give his profile deeper dips, arches and bulges for character. But it's totally up to you! The woman is perfect, btw.

Edit: Oh and *wince* maybe I should wait and make sure my crit is welcome first, but in case you uh...really want it, here is one more little bitty thing - his hand seems really awkward being so horizontal when his forearm is almost straight up. Seems a little uncomfortable to be holding it that way. But as you see I did not even notice when I posted the first part of this, maybe it's not so obvious. Okay! :D

Edit 2: I just know that I feel really frustrated when I spend a long time painting something and then after it's all beautiful and detailed realize something's off in anatomy or perspective. Just trying to give you a heads up before you get too far I guess, as I know I would appreciate it if someone did the same for me.

hiya Vizon,

As soon as I posted it I suddenly realised his eye looked Really small compared to hers, very glad you confirmed that. I'll mess about with Arthur's profile too. After you mentioned it, I started looking at some pics I've got saved as reference and his nose fits very well with a pic of an old Moroccan fellow I have. Hmm, only a few thousand kms off.

Also, I knew something was up with the hand but it "logically" has to be that way. However, I just tried the exact same position with my own hand and it *hurts!* hehehe So yes, arm revision would be a good thing.

Thanks for the crits, very welcome indeed.

Hey, first time joining in on these daily sketches, because I really need to learn how to draw and paint, and this is a great way to learn!

Im affraid I couldnt keep the time limit, kinda lost myself into the painting :)

Here it is, around 2 hours. Dont know the tale, so I just did something for fun.

Here's the lady of the lake from Arthur's POV. 30 minutes in Photoshop.
I wanted to try something reflective of the calmer, more spiritual side of excalibur's story.

The young arthur is confronted by the sword whilst searching for his brothers stolen weapon....took about 40 minutes in painter. Sadly its my 2nd attempt as my first crashed half way through without saving so that was annoying as the first one was better!

Mine is terrible! No reference - it's painfully obvious. The only thing I'm happy with is the ambient green glow. Meh. Probably about 40-mins or so, photoshop, intuos3

Welcome to all the new faces, nice to see people joining the madness :D Pink, the colours and softness of your image really do give a sense of quiet, nicely chosen.

Question for everyone: Vizon's critique of mine in this thread got me thinking -- it's extremely rare that critiques happen here. Is that because of some unwritten rule about the DSG? You come, you post, you mention maybe one or two you really like, the end.

I personally would get a heck of a lot more out of posting here if I got suggestions on what to improve from others. Being as old as I am, I am pretty thick-skinned, so as long as it's a critique that mentions specifics, anything goes as far as mine are concerned.

I guess PMs work for critiques, but I think everyone could gain from some of the more experienced artists around here giving suggestions. As we probably all know, art class isn't about secretly whispering what's wrong with a drawing :)

Just a thought, anyone else up for revealing their level of critique toleration?

Grondhammer, I'm so with you - I would LOVE to hear from the more experienced people who post here - I need all the help I can get, and what's more? I'm with you, for some reason, because I want to learn so much, I have this amazing thick skin I've never quite had before - but I /love/ getting crits... for some reason I just feel it's a great great way to learn.

The only thing is I feel like some of these can't be critted as finished works since they are sketches, so instead of critting technique (for someone like me who takes EONS longer to achieve a rendering of something than someone more skilled and experienced) perhaps critiquing more color use/composition/lighting - the more basics that are shown in a sketch.

I would love to hear from everyone. Then again, we don't want to make this a work thread either I suppose, since people enjoy the fact that they can come in, get a quick idea, sketch it up, toss it in here and it's light hearted... so I'm not sure.
