Wow such contrast from the envoronment. =)

BTW the site looks great. But i would stick away from the taking over your screen thing you got going. Very intrusive (Reminds me of porn pop-ups).

GI joe. It's on the level of V-ray and Final render in the looks department if you ask me. And you also have the wonderful Mental Ray. Yes Maya has it's GI renders baby, plus everything else,it's sweeeeet.
The trailer is totally Matrix all over again. But still is very well done.

It seems like you guys shot the live action parts in digital.

we are students. don`t have the money, to shoot on film. actually it was shot with a sony digi beta camera. i also shot a lot of hi-res photographs of the environment with a digicam.

realy great work! good soundtrack - the prodigy rock!

that`s true, but this are chemical brothers...

i am wondering, why you all are comparing it with the matrix. none of our fellow students who already saw parts of the film mentioned this before. of course it`s an honour, to get compared with such a great movie...
... a lot of thanks to everyone

Thank you TLy!

We use the default renderer of Maya! I know, in these times of so many great renderengines it sounds a bit oldfashioned, but we have good resons for that. Especially if you have to attend to get not too high rendertimes.

Ever think about Mental Ray or GI Joe? Why not those?

i tried mental ray two days ago for the first time. this is theresult (http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=35448) . i like it, but i`m just about to leran the basics of mr. there is gi_joe in many of our scenes. but alex used it only very carefully. i think he lit most of the scenes the conventional way.

 Looks very good, although the Robot is quite the Red Planet ripoff. I mean, it has got similar feet and it even has an almost identical 'unfold' animation.

The Trailer could use an extra scene too, I mean - you bring this wall climb scene two time and besides that there is not much to see.

Anyway, it looks quite promising, I look forward for the finsihed movie. :bounce:

BTW: The Song sounds EXACTLY like "Pushing the Sky" from the Cowboy Bebop Movie OST by Yoko Kano. I wonder wich musician Ripped off the other here ;)

Wow, that's an awesome piece of film you've got there, especially for such a small team (as opposed to what works on a hollywood animation production.) I had also seen the dragon animation you did (although I'm not sure you 4 did that on altogether as well.)

Anyway, the 'character' animation of the robot was great. The kick was very realistic looking motion, which is something, especially in the case of student material, often is forgotten.

I've been to the site of the german film school, and I must say it looks great. Is more of the stuff produced there of a similar quality? Most of the material I've seen coming out of 3D/film/Animation schools blatantly hurts the eye, but the stuff you've made looks awesome. Then again the Tuition fee is incredibly high and considering I'd have to move all the way form holland to attend it's not likely anything for me =]

Good luck with future projects, this stuff is looking great, looking forward to seeing more animated material!

@Skullbox:

I had also seen the dragon animation you did (although I'm not sure you 4 did that on altogether as well.)

Actually that was only Leif Arne Petersen and myself. We two did that for fun and for our reels as a freetime project at the filmschool.

Is more of the stuff produced there of a similar quality?

Hard to say! Every short, commercial or other animation that is produced here is very individual in its style, but the quality of the craft is quite good here. Holland is not that far away, if you want you can visit us in berlin and take a closer look.

Hiya,

Great indeed! Really nice work done so far! Let's see the story... :)

Comments to other others comment:
- I can't understand why it is Matrix-style... Because is it bluish or what??? Could somebody tell me? I'm fan as well...
- Why is a problem if it is the simple "default render"? It is just perfect, and can't be better lit or shaded! Not needed at least... For me it could be done with colored pencil too. If it's fine, who cares, doesn't it? ;)

Some comments:
There are some display-scenes. One of them says "1 drone left". It was a bit confusing to me (until I haven't played it frame by frame): only one drone is destroyed, so why were the other 3 marked out :surprised
But OK, it is a trailer and not all executions are showed... :)

Anyway, amazing job!
-xyth

elhuppi
01-07-2003, 12:00 PM
Thanks xyth!

I agree with you on the default render comment! The only thing that matters in rendering is that is has to look the way you want it to. And that it has the right mood and visuals to support the story and action.

I asked about the render cause i am myself a student in CG and currently making my short movie with maya.
Just wanted to have further technical info ! It's even more to ur credit that u only used default renderer ;)
I think the default renderer rules!!! All u need is good shaders and lighting and modelling :)

my last thread with an ex of defaut rendering... it's stylised though:

Oops, sorry, I didn't wanted to be harsh... So let's conclude that not the tool matters, but the art.

If we are at rendering in Maya... How is it possible to render with sharp, but antialiased edges? Like max has catmull-rom antialias filter. Does maya have this?

Hi TLy!
Took a look at your last thread. This is really great work there! Good to see some more people doin amazing Stuff with the default renderer of Maya. Most of the peopple I know are only complaining about the maya renderer. I guess they just don´t try hard enough. But I don´t want to generalize here, if they are even more luckier with another renderengine then fine.

Only one thing about your images:
They are really awsome, but I kind of like the second one better, because the colors of the shadows have this pretty slight bluish-pink to it in contrary to the warm colors in the highlights. That makes the image more interesting than the other one which has the same colorpalette in the shadows as in the highlights. But on the second thought the first picture as a better composition. The arrangement of bright and lowlit parts is more contrasted than in the second pic. Actually there aren´t any real highlights or bright surfaces in the second one so it lacks a bit of constrast.

But that´s only my opinion and nevertheless a really, really Awesome jog you did there - can´t wait to see more of this project. :applause:

puddlefish

the stills look great, only one thing really caught my eye.

on the 5th one (http://www.dronez.de/img/05.html), if that's a ship in the tunnel to the right of the screen, then the brick texture on the wall looks enormous. is this a minature or a composite element that was shot seperately?

looks good though, but i have to say that, although very well implemented, the robot does remind me of the one from red planet, though i haven't actually seen the film.

perhaps alter the head and feet and maybe the proportions of the legs to the body. i think a simple redesign and a few noticably unique elements would seperate it enough.

looking forward to seeing the rest (any chance we can get an mpg version? avi's and divx files don't work on my machine for some reason!)

i agree with u about the flaws but those pic are still life i did last year, it was school homework erf... and i'm through with them now ;)
This has nothing to do with my current project, which is much much more cartoonish

I'm waiting for ur short to come out with a lot of expectations
!! ;) :bounce:
I didn t know well the german school, but i(ve seen a lot of the filmakademie of baden shorts... is ur school related to it??

when did u start the short ? when will it be done?

elhuppi
01-07-2003, 09:15 PM
@ puddlefish:
these are nor big ships but 4 feet long flying drones which would fight against the robot. It all takes place at a testing facility.

About the avi´s, have you divx 5.02 installed on your system?

sorry, but it´s a little late to make changes to the robot model.
Anyway thanks for the suggestions.

@ TLy:

Well, we don´t have strong relations to the filmakademie baden-würthemberg, but our schoolfounder Prof. Dr. Willim knows the head of their digital animation training Prof. haegele very well for a long time. But other then that there is no special cooperation between our schools.

We did our first shooting in july but we startet the postproduktion in september. Since we had no fulltime working days for the project because of lectures and training courses it will took us about 5 month to finish it. So there still remains some weeks of work for us.

Besides I have to work on my Diploma.

Hi DarkPrimus!

The dialogue will be in russian, but I guess we´ll put english subtitles beneath. So don´t worry.

Thank you very much for the information and the link, we´ll take a look at, but we already have a sound studio composing the music and doin´the sound for the full short.
We took this musik only for the trailer, it won´t be in the final movie.
