Well, I've to admit that I tried to post this image in 2D gallery but it has been rejected. Surely I wrote something wrong in the description or anything else...it's going to be a traumatic process...:scream:
BUT, here in Italy we are used to say "not all the evil comes to do harm" : I think this is a quite good Image so I decided to spend more hours on it and finally try to partecipate to Exposé 5.

So I re-wrote all you critics and that is what I obtained after 3 hs of more work.

First image : the postcard I printed for this xmas (previous post without text)
Second image : the update.

http://aureamediocritas.com/images/itchings/N06_017.jpg

Still need to fix hair, steam and polish a little body's skin.

How about it?

Serena.

How about it? I love it! It's getting great! You're right: not all the evil comes to do harm. The retouches you'd made are perfect, and they adds so much more to the image. Congrats, bella!

I'm really glad to know you will submit it for Exposé 5. I think it's an amazing image.

PS: High res, please! :D

Thank you very much !
I've got the "to-do-list" I wrote yesterday thanks to all your critics and I know that the way is still long...but I hope I'll end with a quite good piece

Hem, which area of the image would you like in high res? It's a 50 x 70 cm canvas so....it can be VERY heavy. :scream:

Oh it was rejected because she's naked on the bottom half of her body - I bet you that's the only reason. That or the direct use of Natalie Portman as a ref - they sometimes don't like that. But I wouldn't feel bad about it -- it's a beautiful piece!!

Everything looks great so far, but I think if you covered he lower part it would look better, maybe you still didnt come to that part yet, or maybe there is something you wanna do from this, but it looks good :)

@Renee: surely you are right but...it doesn't matter :bounce::thumbsup:

@prinova : please, tell me your "reasons" why you wrote she can look better if covered. Anything wrong with anatomy? Write write write :)

@MariaRita : you are in my blacklist...dehehe....next time I'll see you online @msn I'll send yout the high res image

Well...I must take my marathon-practice now and I don't know if later I'll have the energy to paint :P

@prinova : please, tell me your "reasons" why you wrote she can look better if covered. Anything wrong with anatomy? Write write write :)

Do, not at all, nothing wrong with the anatomy, it's just that i think it would look more " I dunnow " it's just that if you are to take all of her clothes or let her wear something in the lower part :P

it's just that I prefer to see artworks without nudity.

maybe there is a reason you want to make her like this. it's just an opinion

CyborgJA
12-29-2006, 11:15 AM
@ Prinova : ahhh it's related to personal "taste". That's a good thing cause I've not to fight against anatomy again :buttrock:

Well...I must be honest...I love nacked bodies. I think that our body is something near the perfection and I love to show it. I don't know if this "way of thinking" belongs to my childhood, spent looking at thousands of nacked statues or anything lese but...it's in my DNA

However I would like to thank you for writing and feel always free to tell everything you think

Hi Serena yes, dont worry it's a personal taste , but that doesnt mean that I dont like women or their bodies. :P I'm a humanbeing and have my own desires too  lol, but I just see that being nude has a certain time.anyways, thanks for giving me the space to speak freely.:wise:

I wuld like you to check my sketchbook, I've updated some stuff and wud like to think your opinion, maybe I still have a fight against anatomy  you'll find it in my signature.

thanks

Well, thank you very much!

As I wrote sunday, I spent my first day of the year making a portrait from 'live'. I have to admit that I discovered some strange aspects of my 'making with colors'. As example, I lock my activity when someone looks at my monitor or is talking with me, I stop to paint when I hear a tir outside in the street and I still paint 'ideal representation of objects' and not their real look. The sample in this case was the pair of glasses. I painted it once, twice....fourteentimes, yes, aligned with eyes to understand that a real pair of glasses can also stay out of eyes' axis.

So...this is Antonio (it's a very common name here in Italy) a neighbour who stayed for 6 hours no stop in my studio with a strong desklamp pointed at his face. The aim was to paint him in the most realistic way. To obtain this goal I've found very useful the 'double window' trick under photoshop : in this way I was able to apply all my colors locally but looking also at the smallest preview. It can appear stupid but...it helps a lot cause only viewing it small you can say " yes, all volumes are ok".
Another thing that I understood "on the way" : I love to define volumes using a pure greyscale. I don't know the reason but I find it more easy, especially to start with basic
areas and shapes. Less infos to 'process'? Less troubles without wars against hues? It's possible...
Then...the step between greyscale and colors can be quite "soft" using this trick : put your colors on a layer in the 'overlay' mode and then merge the two layers. You'll obtain a good mix of values and hues and a good start for the 'detailing' work.
Mm..what I used more...ah, yes! To paint the pair of glasses I created a quick 'basic shape' under photoshop, and then I applied some distortions on it, especially with the "perspective" transform. This saved me a lot of time.

You can see here what I produced. From the basic-volumes pencil, through the B&W volumes' definition to the final look.

http://aureamediocritas.com/images/itchings/AntonioLive_001.jpg

Honesly I'm not SO satysfied but HOW can I can ask him to spend more hours fixed as a statue? :scream:

What do you think? Any suggestion?

By the way....I think I'm in my 'green period' O_O

Kisses,
Serena

danielh68

Fantastic job, Serena. This subject has a lot of volume and many nuances which I think is a byproduct of actually having a posing model as opposed to a photo. The aqua-green evokes a tranquil mood and the warm red-ish hue on the shadow side of his face is a compelling compliment. The color balance is spot on: green is dominant and red is secondary.

My only suggestions are the following:

1. Perhaps some small yet strong highlights placed somewhere on the rim of the glasses.

2. Some warm transparency to the upper-inner part of the ear...but not too much.

3. Part of me wants to see a delineation of the jawbone that starts at the ear and curves down. Not a continuous line that meets with the light on the other side, just a suggestion of one and then disappears. Sort of a lost and found edge.

I'm not saying these are the answers, but it may be something to experiment with.

Again great work:thumbsup:

That's very impressive, Serena. The colors you chose really make this piece. I think his shirt could be slightly more refined, but great work regardless.

The end result is fabulous.

@daniel : 1,2,3 done! Is it better now?

@George, Renee : I polished a little his shirt but I agree with Renee, the aim was to obtain a pure 'charcoal on paper' effect. Have I mixed in the right way your suggestions?

@Renee : eheh! Well, I assure you that I spent a LOT of time to understand what was wrong with his glasses ! Damn.

@MariaRita :your posts are like a "warm wind" in these iced days, thank you very much for the support !

@John : I planned a new live-portrait session for this afternoon with another model. I hope I'll be able to apply a better saving-method so I'll show you more steps if you are interested.

And, of course, the pic (click on preview - 373 KB):

I have a script that saves JPG versions of your entire canvas that I have hotkeyed on my tablet. If you use Photoshop CS or CS2 I can send it to you.

This portrait is probably your best work that I have seen so far. Wonderful colors and sense of form. Of course, I haven't been on CGT in a long time so I might have missed something even greater. No crits from me, I think it's loose and good as it is.

I think it's lovely Serena - the lighting is fantastic :)

Question though - the double window trick? Is that like what Bobby Chiu uses for his videos? Where you have one canvas big and one small to see the zoomed out version of your work? I've always wanted to do that but have NO idea -- do you know??

Sorry for poking in and asking, but I've been wanting to know forever.... haha =D

Can't wait to see today's model!

01-03-2007, 04:31 PM
Serena, I really admire the solid 3d feel to the face. I'm so jealous that you can find people to model for you ;)

Runecaster: I don't know about any other programs, but In Photoshop CS2 the "double window" trick can be used by opening the file your working on, then clicking Window > Arrange > New Window for X (the file you just opened). You can then adjust the zoom on the newly opened copy and paint as usual on the original ....all of the changes you make will show up in the zoomed out "big-picture" (ie the copy you opened in a new window).

I see nothing wrong with the glasses; I think it's because many people expect them too be reflective, so maybe you can add some highlights. No big deal though, the piece is excellent.

CyborgJA
01-04-2007, 09:26 AM
@Renee : the trick is EXACTLY the one Laure described. It works greatly, try it ! And...if you want to know more, always ask for it ok? I'll reply at my next cg-logon

@Laura : thank you very much  ... uhm, well yes, this time I've been very lucky! Of course he will have this pic printed on a 40 x 50 canvas so I think he'll be happy too

@George : well, do not get angry but I think I won't touch this pic again. Starting to be bored...... maybe for the long-painting session....

@all : yesterday my mum broke a water-pipe during a test of the new dish-washer so I had to adjust it and unfortunately I had no time to paint. I hope that Salvatore will be free this afternoon too.

CyborgJA
01-07-2007, 11:23 AM
Ok, I've got news !
Unfortunately I had a lot of troubles with the water pipe so I had the opportunity to paint Salvatore in 3 sessions, for a sum of 9 hs + 4 hs for window and room.
The technique was the same used for the Antonio's portrait but with a 'plus' : I simulated a window's light in my studio 8))
The trick is simple : I created a false-window in "millboard" (I hope is the right word), right on my desk, plus I placed 3 desk-lamps (ok..on 10 books) behind it. Nothing more, it's simple and it runs perfectly.
For the window's description I simply took as reference a real window of my home.

I really want to thank Svetlana for the incredible script : it's easy and I suggest you all to adopt it. So...contact her ! And...Svetlana...open your wip's thread !

These are the image-steps. I think the making-process is more visible now but, as usual, if you have got any question feel free to write it!

Maybe reduce the saturation fo the background? the subtle tones in the face are getting lost because of the highly saturated background. The top of the hair could use a bit more attention. The painting of the wall actually looks better in the version previous to the final, it seems more seamless, whereas I can really see some un-subtle brush strokes on the wall in the final.

You've captured his character quie nicely, well done!

@Stanislaw : come on, in this thread you can be sure that all your critics are well accepted so, next time, please, write everything runs in your mind ! :)

@Ceinwen : well...I'm not so sure of the result but if you like the 'method' I'm using to make this kind of portraits I suggest you this book : "Drawing the head & hands" by Andrew Loomis. It's divided into five parts : Men's head, Women's, babies', boys&girls, and hands. I think this book is really incredible and USEFUL. Honestly I focused myself only on adults cause I'm not so interested now on babies but surely I'll study them too :) It's all a matter of practice....so...good exercises...for both! http://forum.html.it/forum/images/smilies/tupitupi.gif

@Daniel : yes I'll surely put it in my portfolio but, you know, I love to receive critics in the wip area cause it helps me a lot. I really suffer of what I call "lazy-eye". If I focus myself more thank 5 hs on a pic I really do not see all the errors. http://forum.html.it/forum/images/smilies/nillio.gif
Plus, thanks to critics, I learn new things every day. This is the reason why I love cgtalk!

@Renee : believe me...a real model helps A LOT. You are creating a beautiful pic thanks to a "simple" reference of your daughter. Imagine to have her sitting in silence right in front of you in a studio where you can change her pose, the kind of light you are using, the viewing angle...and everything else for HOURS. Mm...well maybe with a little girl is impossible but....why don't you try with your husband? http://forum.html.it/forum/images/smilies/stordita.gif

@George : thank you very much man ! But I'll be more satysfied when I'll be able to paint "from mind" as you do in your pic....you make it appear "easy as drinking a coffee" http://forum.html.it/forum/images/smilies/nondirlo.gif

@Kevin : thank you very much. I wrote down all your critics in my tod list. Thank you !

@Ryan : ehy, when will we see your girlfrind in colors?

@Shreya : well I must admit. I used their vanity plus the idea of a printed-portrait as corruption act. As a matter of facts I'll spend 5 euros and I've obtained 15 hs with 2 models...mm...sometimes I'm a business woman http://forum.html.it/forum/images/smilies/cool.gif

@Svetlana : first of all, open your wip thread http://forum.html.it/forum/images/smilies/dotto.gif I wrote your suggestion in my todo list, I'll fix it as soon as possible, Thanks for checking !http://forum.html.it/forum/images/smilies/tupitupi.gif

So this is the to-do list :
- desaturate a little the bg
- blend a little the background cause now it has got the same sharpness of the foreground (yes yes, it's right...I didn't noticed it)
- more work on hair but no details

See you later,
Serena.

Well, I think it's finished. I've applied all your suggestion except for the desaturation of the bg cause it adds too 'sadness'.

Honestly I'm not so sure about the use of violet in the shadows. I always have troubles with violet, maybe cause it's not one of my favourite colors :scream:

http://aureamediocritas.com/images/am/show/Live-Salvatore.jpg (http://aureamediocritas.com/images/am/gallery/Live-Salvatore.jpg)

And for the moment, STOP, with realistic-portraits. I'm quite bored. I want to have challenges with perspective and "environmental design". I really need to learn how to describe a fixed and readable space..in which I'll put all my bodies http://forum.html.it/forum/images/smilies/tupitupi.gif

But, first of all, I want to finish my Bianca and Nero piece to submit it to exposè http://forum.html.it/forum/faccine/026.gif

@daniel : thank you very much man! The realistic approach was the goal so I'm very happy to have obtained it! Of course this kind of light helps a lot : the use of pure white and pure black give you the capability to use all the greyscale to describe volumes. This is, basically, the main reason why I use spot-light when I describe bodies. In few word : Caravaggio rules.

@MariaRita : O_O well, if one day I'll earn anything with my pics I'll surely assume you as manager !

@AlejoX :  thank you. But man...with a live model....it's easy : I want to reach this level of description from my mind :P

@MariaRita : well, we will have a talk the far day when I'll earn something :wise:

News. Or better... I'm here again with "Bianca and Nero". I re-painted the areas with the colors-error caused by Painter and I set up everything for the next step : anatomy check.

So, these are 2 cropouts :

http://aureamediocritas.com/images/itchings/BEN_018_det0.jpg

http://aureamediocritas.com/images/itchings/BEN_018_det1.jpg

I repainted and corrected Bianca, changed a little the muzzle of the horse, and added a blured third knight.

Here you can see the large comparison between the old state of art and the new one (2500 pxl x 1MB) (http://aureamediocritas.com/images/itchings/BEN_018.jpg)

Following your suggestion, I corrected the top-left black spot adding again some trees' details and noise. To obtain that without re-paint it I used the masking-trick I showed you at page 7 of this thread. In few words I copy-pasted on a layer the same pattern. Yes I know to be "ill-mannered" but I need time to paint Bianca :scream:

As usual...be my fresh eyes and write everything you notice.

Thank you very much,
Serena.

The changes are excellent!

Though I think the little girl's face shouldn't have half of it become blackish. No light reflecting back up from the really bright grass?

There is a patch of odd brown grass under the horse next to the girl.

I look forward to more updates :)

@Linda : the little girl is a ghost, this is the reason why I painted her half-transparent. In the detailing work I'll absolutely show better this idea using the grass behind her (and not a simple dark area). I've noticed the brown spot in the grass too. It will disappear soon :P

Well, I started to study in the right way our anatomy. The first step is, of course, the arm's bones so I'll be able to paint the knights' forearms with the maximum fidelity in the next image step :)

Btw, I'm making some sketches and collecting them in more plates in order to have a quick-access atlas for future works. I decided to start a sharing-experiment with the first plate. Tell me if you find it useful. In this case I'll continue to post them all.

Well, still in trouble with my ears (yes, both now) but luckily my arms and hands are better so I've got some news for you.
I've been asked to develop a jewel-line with "sea, conch" as keywords. So I decided to show the whole line in a single pic and this girl will be my "model".
The title is "L'onda che amò il cielo" ( it should sound like "the wave who loved the sky") and, of course is still in progress. I think I'll leave her quite unfinished and
soft like foam. How about her?

Update : Horses' sketches, plate 01, finished !

http://aureamediocritas.com/images/am/show/HorseSketches01.jpg (http://aureamediocritas.com/images/am/gallery/HorseSketches01.jpg)

Hi Serena, first your horses are beautiful- the anatomical form is quite realistic in the horse on the top left and the horse in the center has a nice detail on the legs...the horse on the bottom right has the right coloring (beautiful chestnut?) and your choice of Andalusian horses is wonderful. Andalusians are unique in that they retained some of the features of the Arabian's fluid lines and some of the larger draft horse lines.

If you don't mind Serena, I'm going to crit just the horse on the right bottom (I'll call him Red). The star/blaze doesn't look as natural as the rest of Red's body, the bottom end of the blaze is too stumpish (perhaps a little more blending and some shading to narrow it and add some darker hairs towards the ends as that's where the two different patches of color mix)...other than that. love your work and don't worry, you can teach us through your sketches without having to write up tutorials and english lessons.

thanks!

hi serena, you've got some really good work in here.

i particularly enjoyed seeing your progress on the pic with the girl riding on the horse. and speaking of horses, the sketches are sweet.

about your last picture, i also think it is still a little hard to see what you are going for overall in the picture, but the topic and the feel of it might really work great. i think leaving the girl soft, maybe even kindof like a waterelemental could be pretty cool.

i know it's a wip, however, one thing i found slightly irritating is her left arm that she is holding up. it is obviously slightly bent, but looking at it from this point of view, this is not clearly readable yet i think. one could even misread it as the arm being outstretched but drawn too short. maybe if you rework the area a little where the upper arm and the lower arm connect at the elbow, it would make it better. i also think that her throat and chin would benefit from a very slight highlight along the silhouette, to make it merge less with the arm behind it.

look forward to seeing this one progress:)

anyways, just some thoughts. get well and keep going,

best,

Jan

Hi there !
First of all I apologize for my absence in what I call "my dear posting-activity".
Unfortunately I had too many troubles in these months, and honestly, I've not fixed them yet but colortherapy has been and still is my salvation so it's time that I show you what I did in those minutes that I've been able to "scratch out" .

Ah, by the way, I'll try to recover all the time I've lost looking at all the update-email that cgtalk sent me but if I was used to normally post on your thread and you do not notice anything by me, PLEASE give me an ack, a carrier-pigeon...no better a white paloma.. in short contact me

@Laura : in theory the girl is herself a wave so totally made of water. I hope that the final version is more clear than the step you was referring to.

@MariaRita : well I hope to change soon my palette. Maybe in a pink mode ^_^ Thank you for checking !

@LunaticSymphony : thank you very much for your critics. I totally agre and I'll tell you more : as soon as possible (to read: when the sun will decide to warm up a little the ground)
I'll surely spend days looking at horses from live. I'm really "enchanted" by their elegance and ...uff there are no words...I love all the animals but horses have got a particular place in my heart.

@Annette :Thank you very much! I had a trip on your website... your works have got a particular style ! I especially admire the way you managed colors in "noey", portraits sections.

@ Jan : thank you very much for your critics. I totally agree both on the left arm (that I left as you can see ONLY cause, in the final brochure it is covered by a jewel-tech sheet)....Ok...call me lazy :P
I've managed the 'shining-line' as you pointed out. Hope that it is better now.

Well, this is the pic. Unfortunately I'm not free to show you all the work I did on the jewels. This is the reason why all the right area it's empty, and the one that imposed me to do not spend too many hours on the girl. I'm sure that you can understand what an "submission time" means. Ehh...well...I'll have other chances to do something better.

'I'll post a final version of Nero and Bianca in a few minutes'...when?! I hope you didn't get struck by lightning (or your computer):).

I just spent two hours browsing through your entire thread. Your work is SO, SO good. Most of all I like your variety: just when I think classic detailed work is your thing, you come up with something brilliantly loose and flowy, and vice versa. I really admire that.

On your last pic I had a few comments, even though it's done, so just ignore it if you want.
1.) The breasts look a bit lumpy, more like built out of squares than spheres;
2.) She seems a bit heavy in her legs, could maybe be a bit more flowy and elegant considering the subject.

Anyway what do I know:). I'm just a beginner. But I very much like the fact that you share your knowledge in tuts etc.! Btw do you happen to know a good tutorial for painting (pale) skintones? I'm sorry I have to ask like this, I just can't find any (clumsy me!).

I very much hope you feel better. Health problems tend to suck you up entirely. I know from experience. Get well soon!:wavey:

I totally agree with your critics...maybe she belongs more to the mother hearth than to the fluid sea...well...I promise that next time I'll do it better ! I hade troubles with my connection, this is the reason why I'm posting my work on Bianca e Nero only this morning. I apologize :( !

I'll post all the jewels' design if I'll be free to do that ! :bounce:

Oh, GREAT! I really love how it's very painterly with large areas that are mere indication of realism, it gives you a chance to let your imagination run wild. The horse (that's Nero right?) looks beautiful, friendly, like a save haven. I'd like to hug him.
I was totally kidding btw about not seeing it before - it's your thread, hehe:)

Thanks for sharing this with us.

My only crit for now that I could see is the bony arm of the knight on the left. Compared to the sketchiness of his horse it really stands out. You probably wanted that, though. It's just that it takes my attention away from his face, which also stands out.

You got an excellent eye and a perfect interpretation of my purpose. If you notice, also the Bianca's right hand (Bianca is the nacked woman) is out of proportions. I've added here and there few manipulation to increase contrast or to show better a specific meaning. I'm not telling that each error has been calculated eh...nonono... as example the right leg of Bianca can be improved... so if you see something else wrong please

Thanks for the kind words Serena. I love how you as an artist seem genuinly interested in all the aspects of painting, not just being praised but learning from crits too. I love it, it shows your dedication, respect! (yo!):).

I hardly dare say because the praise for N&B is so unanimous, but I see a tiny thing off with Bianca. Can't even pinpoint it, but if I zoom out much on the image it seems the way you've shaded Nero and Bianca are in a 'clash'. Nero has very sharp shadows and the shadows on her are very subtle. Since they are in the same depth from the viewer (urgh?:)) And in the same light, maybe their shading should be more alike too?

I really don't know, I love the painting very much (but you know that) as it is. I'm only venturing this because you stuck a feather up my butt:D and I lost my head:).

Well I want to improve my skills and the shortest way is to listen to others and read, study, apply with practice what you understand so...honestly... I should pay for these suggestion. You know...consulence is one of the most payed works of the world :P
Oh yes I agree with your critic. The single thing I can tell you is that, to paint Nero, I used a lot my own experience with live horses. So the "3D" idea of their chest's muscles and in general of ALL their muscles that I've got is a little bit different if compared to my own body's one. Mm...I'll try to explain. I'm a quite fat girl...so over my muscles I can notice a layer of fat that reduces a lot the gaps that there are between each 'stripe' of muscles that, as example, I've got on my arms. This doesn't happen with the horses and this is the basic reason for the 'sharpness' that I used to describe Nero's body. But, of course, the idea can be right but the realization can't be :P !

Good evening !

@Joakim : well industrial design requires a good knowledge of perspective and, honestly, I still have to study it in the right way. Of course, one day I'll manage it as my bag so be sure that I'll describe cities and in general picture with a strong sense of space rules. Thank you for checking !

@Tiziano : thank you man ! Please, write freely if you see errors !

@Johan : eh...I've to re-acquire the joy and desire you put in your pics! It's always a pleasure to surf your thread :)

@MariaRita: well not this cow cause she produces delicious milk. But yes.....asadooohhhhhhhh

@Steven : oh man...how much I can understand you. The single thing I can tell is, if you can, to see them "Live". It helps a lot to touch them and understand how they walk, run, how they move...so...when you'll paint a horse, you'll tell to yourself "ehi, nah, this pose
is impossible cause a,b,c...." In few words, you'll find in a more easy way, what doesn't run in your horses.

@Dario : well, all these cows are, generally, very very peaceful, but yes, I can see this tension in my picture
and, usually, this has got only 1 cause : I was nervous while painting it :D
I still have to learn how to masquerade my feeling to better reach the pic-purpose. :P

@Stanislaw : ehehhe, I think we still have to learn a lot of things looking at other animals so...MOOO yo you too :))))

Ohh Easter time is really a good chance to have rest and find the time to paint, isn't it?!
I found charcoal too heavy for the kind of "mou"-picture I had in mind, so I restarted it
using faber-castell art pencils (the green and gold ones) with a range starting from the B up to the 7B. This is the result after 6 hours of work, hope you like it !

But...ok...what really matters is that the project that I created from A to Z is a success so everything goes to background and the joy pops up.

@Arnaud : no man, unfortunately it is lost. To hear something like a "noisy sound" I've to receive 95 dB directly in my left ear. Uff I've got acouphene too...luckily I'm able to isolate the no-stop sound with my mind but yes..."distressing" is the right word. And what irritate me is that doctors have not been able to find the cause of all this mess.
Well it seems that -from me- cities are more difficoult than animals 8))))))))
I can't wait to check the updates and find your new pictures !

@Johan : "freedom"....well...the subject helps a lot... thank you for the kind words !

@Madmax : man..you disappeared from icq...send me your new sketches ;)

Well...waiting for the new WIP (yes yes I'm setting up a picture for exotique) I want to show you this quick portrait I made in about 4 hours. The cow belongs to "Bruna Alpina" specie and is owned by a super-VET that works in the "La botanica" farm.

@Laura : yesssss I'm here again even if I had to fight again with my boss cause he do not want to leave me free. Damn, I've to write my thesis now and I absolutely need to "brath" a little. I'm glad you like this cow!

@Johan : thankyou very much man ! Your thread is always very inspiratory!

@Ricardo : >_> I'm a free hug-able woman Thank you !

@Ryan: from what I read you are having an intense working-period eh? Well I'll wait to see your updates !

@Rinske : too gentle! I'll do my max with the few free hours I've got. Hope you'll appreciate the wip.

Well, I'll post now the updates.
The first one is a scan of the project I was working on before the HD's dump. This scan is the unique testimoniance of the work cause I've lost the whole sector.

http://aureamediocritas.com/images/itchings/TheGreenHeartOfJasm-FirstIdea.jpg

In Italy there's a proverb that says :" not all the bad things come to cause damages" and this was the case. I must recognize that I was repainting another "Bianca and Nero". So this monday I sketched a little while I was travelling (this is the reason of the low-quality pictures) and I developed the idea of a princess escaping from the corruption of her country with the green city's hearth, symbol of freshness and hope of a new future.

http://aureamediocritas.com/images/itchings/TheGreenHeartOfJasm_002.jpg

http://aureamediocritas.com/images/itchings/TheGreenHeartOfJasm_001.jpg

This last image is the actual state of art. I've used tons of references for this horse, photos and live sketching. Now I'm going to "dress" him and then I'll place the princess and, of course, I'll dress her too 8) Ah...I'm changing the saddle from an english to a western one. I think this will permit to add more stylish deocs on it >_>
I'll start with colors when I'll have a quite good base in B&W in order to easily obtain depth and volumes without loosing too many hours.

http://aureamediocritas.com/images/itchings/TheGreenHeartOfJasm_003.jpg

Well, I wait here your suggestions, in the meantime I virtually offer you a great granita siciliana ^___-

hello serena. that's a wonderful horse you got there. :D sorry if i haven't been able to chat with you recently. i'm still burried in a ton of work. (which also explains the lack of updates on my own wip thread)

anyways i've never seen horses up close and my only experience with them is when i look at pictures and when i'm converting miniatures. :D if it's all okay, what i'd like to suggest is to examine the rider's posture more in comparison to the horse. the rider is a little too relaxed(based on your sketch, that is) to be sitting on a horse in full gallop(is that the right term?). i figured she'd be leaning forward or something & clinging to the horse more tightly. i also think that the change in posture might create a sense of urgency on her behalf and send out a clearer message that she's running away from home. lastly... i'm pretty certain it's just me but in case it's not... a quick check on the hind legs might improve the horse's overall center of balance (it seems to be falling off to one side).

your mastery of horse anatomy is very impressive serena. i hope we see more updates from you soon. really inspiring. :applause:

p.s... i can imagine what you plan for the clouds. i think it's perfect. ;)

CyborgJA
06-21-2007, 12:01 PM
Hi Ryan! Uff I can understand you and I hope you'll find the time to paint and relax too !

Well, in my mind the horse is having a "little-short gallop" so it is not completely launched at its own maximum speed. This is the reason why I've described it as a little bit quiet instead of "crazy mane in the wind". Plus it is having a "torsion" cause it is changing direction to the right due to the order the girl is giving him (this is the reason why the back legs have got a different plane if compared to the front ones). The girl doesn't know WHERE to go. I want to focus the attention of the viewer on this aspect.

Yes, I agree with you : I need to add more "pathos" and the girl's pose makes the game. I think I've to change a little also the horse's muzzle. MMmm it's going to be challenging!

Thank you for your suggestion !

The face 1:1 ratio
http://aureamediocritas.com/images/itchings/TheGreenHeartOfJasm_005-fac.jpg

I think I've to correct a little the right eye's upper eyelid. Ah, as you can see I'm using the charcoal technique on a rough paper...I think I'll leave this sense of "undefined" in order to play with pure brush strokes and "leave in the corner" diffusers and blenders. I don't know what I'll reach but...we are here to learn, isn't it? ^__^

CLICK HERE FOR THE WHOLE PIC (500 KB @1200 px) (http://aureamediocritas.com/images/itchings/TheGreenHeartOfJasm_005.jpg)

Please do not see so much her 'belly' cause I'll cover it with the horse's mane so I have not spent time on it.
Looking at it this morning I think I've to enlarge a little her forearm cause now the arm seems to be too long. I think it's a matter of bad rendering of the forearm muscles....what do you think about it?
Ah, please, remember that I'll dress her later so I've not described shadows in a precise way except the face's ones.

But now the question is :" ehi, where should I place the green jewel now? >_>"

Mmm...

I must go to university, see you soon and thank you for checking !

Well, you know what I think about this sketch: I'm loving it. I just can't wait to see it finished!

Regarding the arm: Yes, I see something "weird", but I don't think it's too long, I think it's too thin. Or maybe I see it thin because ir's too long... :D I wish I could help you on this, bur I'm not an anatomy genius... :banghead:

Regarding the green jewel: Place it where you prefer! Go with your own feeling, your passion and your talent will be the best guide for you. :)

Not sure what you plan with the female character in this but would she look more dynamic if her head and torso were leaning more towards the horses neck? It would mean lifting the girl's butt from the sadle and stretching her legs just a bit, but it would be a nice way to indicate that she is leading her horse somewhere... Right now it looks a bit like the horse is the boss and she is failing to control it...

Ah, maybe I'm exaggerating... this is so impressive already

CyborgJA
06-27-2007, 09:33 PM
@Johan : this is exactly what I want to transfer. She is not a good rider, she is not secure. She doesn't know where to go and she doesn't know her future, she is only knows that now she is far from the city.
This is the reason why I've used an half gallop, the reason why her torso goes to the back and not viceversa.

Well, you are the third that want to see this kind of position...I promise that my next pic will have a horse at its own maximum speed with a perfect rider ^__^

Well, this is the update:

- a rose tattoo that pops up from skin and becomes a neck-ring (homage to Vallejo)
- transparent dress everywhere
- metal objects here and there (leg and hand and belly)

http://aureamediocritas.com/images/itchings/TheGreenHeartOfJasm_006-wip.jpg

I think that I'll manage all the details with the "charcoal-detail" (I'm working under painter) in order to be able to trace tiny lines

Hi !
Well I messed up a little with colors and I want to show you what I've obtained.
Unfortunately I have been so "into" the work that I not saved the steps :( but I'll describe them shortly in order to let you understand the process.

1. THE GROUND

1. find a good pebble image. Create a brush.
2. using the perspective grid of the picture, start to scale the brush here and there respecting the grid. This will create something like a dimension-guide for pebbles and will help you in the next step
3.start to paint the middle tone then the dark then the light one respecting the guide
4. create more brushes for a more realistic effect
5. use all your patience to describe "handly" all the pebbles in the focal area (not finished yet)

2. THE HERBS
1. I've to finish them but for the moment I used the same pebble- brushes applied more times with a lower opacity.

3. THE COLORS
1 add one or more layers in color, multiply, softlight etc etc mode
2. start to add colors
3. mix them taking care of "errors" (strange stripes of colors here and there). I suggest you to use diffuser in order to mix all the colors in a uniform way.

Well, still TONS of work to do.
On the left the first version with red's errors.

Serena, the whole is coming out beautifully, and I simply adore the horse. :)

If I may I'd suggest that in the 'detailing' stage you are now you pay extra attention to the little muscles in the face and neck that give 'shades' of expression. At the moment (and can be a matter of the stage you're in, mind you) her face reads a bit stiff to me.
Change that and you've definitely a winner piece here!

07-03-2007, 10:36 PM
Hi Serena! Great paintings you have here! About the last one, well I really like how it's going. But I think the skin highlights could use some more "yellowish" tones.. for they look a little pale. Maybe it's just me?
Another thing.. I find quite difficult to tell she's actually crying.. (excepet, of course, in the details) I was thinking you could use an expression that goes better with the tears.. Cause except for the wide open eyes, she looks.. uhm.. "neutral" (not sure if it's neutral... it' something between happy and surprised.. right?) right now...
Dunno, just suggestions. (: Keep that great work flowing! :D

@MR : dear, you have nothing to learn from me but if you got any question fell free to write them when and where you want. I'll try to reply at my best ^_^
And good look with your "Es copia Fiel", I'm sure it will be great !

@Tiziano : ohh man, you do not know how many times I tried to describe the muscles' position but unfortunately I do not have the "resolution" to do that. Imagine that the brush strokes that you see are 1 px wide. It's quite impossible to add details without blending and if I blend I loose the characteristic of this picture. As a matter of fact I planned it to be a "general" view. And the canvas already is a 50 x 70 cm !
Well...it will be for the next time isn't it?

@Matias : Added yellowish strokes here and there! The expression is a mix of fear, doubt and sadness. Plus wind in the eyes cause of the horse-gallop 8))

Well I declare it 'finished' even if I know I can improve it a lot. But I take this decision cause I must start to develop characters in a quick way and especially start to produce more pictures to have new experiences. I also want to lear perspective in order to place my humans in complex scenario so stay tuned I'll surprise you ! ;)

Here is the whole picture, I'll update this thread as soon as cgsociety will accept my picture (I hope eh) at 2D gallery !

Hi there !

Long time that I do not update this thread, I apologize.
Well, first of all, if you want to have a full view of what I'm working at I think you should check my anatomy thread : I'm sketching and modeling for a picture that, in my mind, has to break. It must have got perspective, composition, and strong anatomy. Of course, as soon as I'll end with the basic anatomy of all the characters I'll shift it to this thread in order to show the full "progress".

Today I'll "spam" you with 2 new pictures : "Pioggia" and "Angelo Decaduto".

Pioggia means "rain" and it's the name of a female pony. The strange thing of this pony is that she is able to do the "candle" like a normal horse. For this reason a journalist of the website http://www.arabitalia.com/ asked for an illustration of her. As USUAL I won't get a penny but this website gots 10000 hits at day so I thought it could be a good chance to have advertising...
So I started with the idea of "rain" and "poetic" so I placed her on the pure diagonal of the sheet as you can see :

http://aureamediocritas.com/images/itchings/Pioggia000.jpg

but the journalist limited me in the pose : the "candle" should respect simmetry and several "fixed" alignments so this is the result after 5 hours of work on her :

http://aureamediocritas.com/images/itchings/Pioggia001.jpg

These are the references :
http://aureamediocritas.com/images/itchings/PioggiaReference.jpg

and this one for the background that I massively used as reference cause I felt in love with this kind of light :
http://www.meteo6.com/temporale140805b.jpg (it's a large picture)

Of course I still have to add colors and definition to the shadows and refine the grass and the mane and....infinite list....

The third and last piece is called "Angelo decaduto - declined angel".
Its story is quite strange. Two years ago I made a reproduction of a Eva Herzigova image I found on a my mum's magazine. Uhmm I'm not so sure she was the Herzigova...well doesn't matter at the moment...and I stored this reproduction on a folder that I picked up again yesterday to go as usual at the farm where I take my relax after a day of thesis-writing.
This image hit me again so I decided to develop it as an illustration with the idea of an angel. As you can see from the photo, the wing is totally of and I decided to redraw it (saint rubber!) in order to obtain a stronger perspective. If I'll lucky this evening I'll find 1 hour to work on this piece.
Hope you like the idea : double focus with a city in the mountains and her on a rock.

See you soon,
Serena. :wip:

Good to see an update from you :) I really like the horse painting, the lighting is what shines most.

The idea for the angel painting sounds interesting... but there is soemthing about the pose that looks a bit un-angel like. I think it is the way the legs are positioned. If her right leg were brought down to lie against her left it might help. Her two legs together could then surve as a sort of "Z" shape pointing back to your point of interest in the background. At any rate, keep up the great work (and the updates ;p). I look forward to what you will share next.

CyborgJA
08-27-2007, 06:40 PM
@Laura : oh yes woman, I see what you mean. And I think you are right. Well, I'll have some quick sketches here on painter in order to make the right choice. In my mind, her left wing is another link to the city. I would like to obtain something like a 4 times movement :
1 - start / origin at left bottom corner
2 - jump to the angel following her right wing
3 - jump to the city following her left wing
4 - back to the start cause the "plumage" catches the eye

But of course...it's all to develop !

Well...a quick update : I think her back is flat. I had to add muscles here and there to obtain something "round". Of course I'll use the reference :P
I worked on the background refining the grass and the sky, hope you like it.
Still to define mane/tail and details.

Hey Serena

I really like your color palette. I think it's an area in which you've made a lot of progress lately... creating the right mood! Splendid job on the environment!

The pony is really fantastic but I think her back leg needs more volume.

looking forward to see your next update :)

@ Johan, Magdalena and Madmax : thank you very much, you are too gentle !

Well, you can find here few details of the head even if it's not finished

And here you can see the full image. I do not show it directly cause it's 1200 px wide.

I adjusted her back as you suggested and worked on grass. I think the left bottom corner is a little bit empty...isn't it?

Not if your signature is there ;)

It's really a pleasure to the eye (and I'm not even into horses/ponies that much)

@Laurghita : thank you very much ! In the speed of adding green I excedeed in line's lenght. Now the horse's breast is safe !

@Johan : ehehe yes but if I print this picture in a book I can't leave my signature everywhere 8)) Nah, in my whole life I earned an incredible sum of 35 € with my pictures, and it's real hard here in Italy to get money with art.

Well...I think it's finished, and you?

Hey Serena! great work!:applause: Love the colors! I think you could try adding a few bigger pieces of dirt falling off the hoofs, among the smaller ones.. i would imagine that the horse-shoes would have a phoughing effect on the soil, thereby dislodgeing a couple of bigger lumps.. just a thought!

@Johan : man, 4 eyes are always better than 2. Especially if we are talking about your 2 eagle-eyes !
@JanMarK : I'm really glad that you appreciate this colorscheme. From what I can see, I'm more able to manage 'dulled' palettes....well maybe "no saturation" is the melody in my dna !
@Ananad: thank you very much for your suggestion and feel ALWAYS free to write eveything run in your mind. It is helpful cause in this way I'm able to understand the different reactions that people gots in front of my pictures. I enhanced few pebbles here and there, even if I went against the journalist's opinion cause when the horse is in this position it has already done the "movement" so it's quite impossible to have dust and pebbles. However I thought that this element enhances the dynamics of the whole composition so I left it >_>

@Adrian : as soon as possible man ! I love it too !

Well, the pony is at 2D Gallery at this link http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?p=4621952#post4621952

Serena, it's beautiful! I can't believe how long it is since I've been on this website, and I can't believe the very last thing you've drawn is a horse. It's a stunning one - the light and colours are unusual, very realistic, and so captivating... I'm going to go read the rest of the thread now!

@Ceinwen : I'm really glad you liked this pony. I think I'll draw new pics related to horses !

@Anand : as you desire man

Well, I'll start to post here a wip that doesn't follow my ordinary workflow cause I decided to have a look into 3D world and use it as support for the creation of "complex" environments.

The concept I'm going to describe can be reassumed into the word "TEMPTATION". Of course I'll represent it as an allegory that in my mind must have a multilevel approach : every "viewer" should be free to interpretate the picture shifting its meaning to his/her personal experience in order to be "free" to read it in a personal way and not only with the "provided-author-point of view".

The picture is made of 4 basic components:

1. The baby : is who spends passion and time studying and having practice in what s/he loves. She is painting a "crap" on the canvas cause she still is in the learning process.

2. The witch : the temptation. She shows the easy way to the baby as a magic brush that is able to paint incredible images. She is made by smoke cause here in Italy a "smoke seller" is someone that tries to sell you something that doesn't exist or someone that puts smoke into your eyes in order to make you blind.

3. The academy : the place where the baby is studying and where she can meet other artists but there are also "politics" that use art only as an instrument to obtain power and money. (Still to paint them on the background)

4. The exit door : this element represents the view to the outside world and is covered by the witch's body. You know...when temptation is strong you doesn't see anything else.

Ok, I should stop writing and show you some pictures :scream:

The rendering of the academy . In my opinion 3D helps a lot in this phase cause it's like having a strong photo-reference that comes out directly from your mind. Beautiful !

http://aureamediocritas.com/images/itchings/idngf_012.jpg

This one has been a first study of mixing zbrush subjects without exporting them with a displacement map to reimport in 3Dmax.
I need something more "quick" cause I use them as reference and not as pure 3D.

http://aureamediocritas.com/images/itchings/idngf_013.jpg

A quick texture for wood table. The marble texture has been another experiment to see how the brush size decreases in perspective but it cuts the "dimension" of columns so I removed it.

http://aureamediocritas.com/images/itchings/idngf_014.jpg

Marble-floor design

http://aureamediocritas.com/images/itchings/idngf_016.jpg

And the actual state of "art".
I'm still composing the picture, I'll check for saturation/hue/atmosphere later.

http://aureamediocritas.com/images/itchings/idngf_017.jpg

Well, I'm here waiting for suggestions !
I think I'll create a tiny tutorial with all the max and zbrush meshes and tricks that - as a beginner- I found helpful.

See you soon,
S.

Hey Serena! Great to see you start another painting!!:) ..Looking very potent already!.. Like the idea of the smoke-witch coming from the extinguished candle.

Aah.. something which crossed my mind while looking at it just now.. since you are doing the layout in 3D, you could give yourself the luxury of experimenting with different camera angles and focal-lengths.. you never know what you come across!!... may find something you weren't event thinking of, which could possibly add an entirely new dimension!! Keep it up!! We are with you!!:scream: :bounce:

@Anand : man you are absolutely right BUT....first I've to learn how to change teh focal-lenght :D:D:D:D:D but don't worry I'll learn it soon !

@Johan: I know that using 3D can be a politically - incorrect solution but I'm learning TONS fo new things about lighting and composition thanks to these programs and "world" so I decided to try also this field and have practice with it....maybe one day I'll be free to paint in 2D as...in 3 D ;D

Today I got an update "out of my standards". It's my first attempt in the creation of a tutorial, so I used a quick sketch as first sample. Please, if you got 5 minutes of freedom, have a look at it, I need your suggestion for a more pro project.

Well, long time since I do not post in this thread.
A lot of thing happened, I finished the thesis and substained the discussion (the proclamation will be this 13th), and I've been employed by Ubisoft here in Milan so my days have been crowded of tasks and my nights reserved to refilling sleeps.

@Daniel, Jan, Eric : thank you very much !

@Brooke : SUCH A GREAT NEWS !!!

Love whimsical. We all need to dig these critters out of our imagination from time to time.

Lots of good studies. I like that you are breaking down the perspctive in drawing your horses. Boxes are good tools. It helps so much in figure work and life studies. It's amazing how pretty much everything boils down to basic shapes.

Will be watching. :)
