Hi people,

i was making me some thoughts about, what really happends to all the great models we see here every day. Most of them I guess are for demoreels, cg challenges :D or personal use. But mostly i think, they are lying on some computers like junk. I mean, what about this... Lets say, CG-CHANNEL or CGTALK makes a new categorie, where every artist can put up their models. And every registered user can use them. OK, lets go a bit deeper.
Take me...I build models for fun and of course to use it for my demoreel some day. So i wont simply give the models aways to people. And why? Because I am afraid, that they say, the made not me ... Know what i mean.
OK good. But think now, there would be a database here on cgtalk/channel, where artist put their stuff up and their work is being registered and everybody can see, who did what. So the work of the artists are somehow protected and many people get access to models. Of course all for free. And the best is, nobody can really steal them, because if you showing or demoreel lets say to ILM, and the directer says, hey I have this model too, then you can show im your entry in the database, and voila, its yours.
I am sure, i missed many options about this all, but I hurts me to see all the great models, used once or two times and then rotting on some harddiscs.
Maybe every artist should only download so many models, like he/she put in the "cg database" And of course, somebody has to check the quality of these models. Or maybe a rating system could help too, high quality models given to the database getting more points, so the artist can download more or better models or so.
And at last, it has to make sure, that these models are somehow copyright protected, i mean not cgchannel/talk gets any right on it, only the artist who build them. But cghannel/talk have to put some "sticker" (logo file, text file or so) to every model, so everybody sees, these are free models for private use only. And they cant be sold via companies like TURBOSQUID.

Ok, hard to explain it all to you....but i hope u got the idea and maybe its coming true.

Cheers Migi

i think this is a horrible idea....

only because anything given away freely could not be protected. remember your little story about the ilm guy noticing the character in the demo real... why would he not say to himself "wow this is the guy who made that awesome model i downloaded!"

if you want to give away your models there are plenty of sites that will do this for you, but don't expect people not to claim them as theirs.

finally cg talk and cg channel are NOT affiliated anymore(over 6 months..) since cg channel screwed the cg talk guys out of $$$ they are definetly seperate entities.

Hmmm, it seens i made myself not clear enough.
I dont seek a place to share my models...i just thought, that it would be nice, that u can share ur model and be sure, nobody can say, he did it, because your name is in the CG TALK database or so.
Sure many will try to "steal" our work, but its like with .mp3's. I cant stop copying (stealing) stuff, but still everybody knows, hey this song is from madonna, this from ...
Got me now?

Bye Migi
