View Full Version : Creating "Smoke" with R8??
pltfrm 01-05-2003, 12:25 PM Hi..
Is it possible to create this kinda smoke in cinema4d r8?
I've been trying to achive but with poor results?
I have TP and Pyrocluster. The smoke should be in motion.
Any ideas?
Sorry for the poor quality of the image.. :)
Thanks..

sadly good smoke is very difficult to achieve, you can either use a horrendously high number of particles, or you could try useing geometry maybe with the pelham design shaders for the actualy foggy effect, and perhaps lofting out a wriggly spline into the shape ofthe smoke,,, could be made to animate with some work i think, there's also the posibility of slaving a surface to some particles using either tdem, or thinking particles, but it'd very hard to get a good result that way to be honest...
what you might try is the following
make a loft of something closeish to the smoke shape, could be something as simple as a tube
make a material that's got bhodinut fresnel multiplied over a 3d linear gradient (that goes from 0 in y through to the height of your model in y) in a bhodinut fusion in the alpha channel, and has a certain ammount of luminance, this is teh smoke material, now go to the displacement settings of that material
in the displacement settings add a bhodinut 3d noise, now it's goign to take some experimentation to get this to work right, but make the noise reasonably large, and make it travel in the y direction over time, also slightly convoluting, then in the displacement setttings make sure that the displacement height is nice and large (cos this should give your smoke it's ripples).
anyhow if you try to play with that for a bit, you can slowly build up its complexity by adding in fusions and gradients and hatnot to get a good breakup towards the top fo the smoke, but this might be a starting point for you :)

Thanks for the reply mdme_sadie, somehow knew you would anwser.
I have been working with a volumetric light with sla 3d noise. I got some good results. But dont think that i can control it as much as i want.. is it possible to deform volumetric lights some way?
Would it be possible for you to create a example file on the technique you explained mdme_sadie?
Thanks..

Oh, And another question, Is there away to blur the 3d noise somehow?
Thanks

just put the 3d noise at the bottom of a fusion. then you can blur it with the sliders next to the noise. ;)

What ever happened to the ability to use volumetric lighting to emulate smoke?
Didn't someone ever say they were able to use noisy volumetric lighting, but the lights had a multiplying effect, instead of a lightening one.
...I don't know... that would be SO cool if you could do that... maybe with post processing and layer negatives you can do it.

I remember Softimage 3D having a scene that did this years ago. I also remember it took ages to render. So maybe ask the XSI fellows to see how it was done on that system. Better if you have access to the tutorial or scene files. Try the free version of XSI.
I was going to have a go myself, so I will post if I get any results. I will say that it is a two step proccess of getting the motion of the particles right and then getting the look right.

I've been playing with Thinking Particles, but i havent gotten that kinda motion. Its real hard. I cant get the kinda detain in it as real "cigarrette, smoke" has. It comes out too smooth.
Has anyone else gotten any results?
Heres what mine looks at the time, SUCKS REAL BAD :annoyed:

Have you tried this?
Are you sure it works?
Me thinks not...

I tryed the 3d noise on fusion, but i't didnt work for me at least.
Has anyone gotten any results on the smoke? damn its hard.. I think Maya's Fluid Effects could do the job real nice. Maybe should download the education version and test it.
Any ideas?

this is one i just made up using ditools dishaper on a highly subdivided plane
http://www.peranders.com/c4d8/samples/jpg/smoke.jpg
click here (http://www.peranders.com/c4d8/samples/mov/smoke01.mov) for the movie
and the file is here's the file (http://www.peranders.com/c4d8/samples/c4d/smokec4d.zip)
with a little bit of tweaking you should be able to get something approximating the effect you're after, i'm sorry i couldnt spend longer than 5 mins on this, but i gotta get working on my website today :)
hope this helps

ehy mdme_ take care to bring in life the old thread on bhodinut forum about smoke...............you didn't come up to such great result last time!!!
It's probable Govinda will have an orgasm when he'll se your 5min test!!!
I will download it too for further experiments!!!
Really thank's to share!!!!!!!!!

thanks... i think. i hope i never stop learning... i'd be more worried if what i produced now wasn't better than something i did six months ago :)
i can't say i even remember the thread, but this isn't that great, you can do good stuff using gradients on a plane and distortion, but it takes more effort to get as good as a result... however the end result can be better if you really know what you're doing... i've seen some amazing things done this way in maya.

I consider myself a newbie and I will never stop learning too!!! People like you and Kaiskai for example help people like me learning faster!!!

@jeremyw:
well i often blur photos like this. for example in the environment channel. but i gotta saya that i never tried this with a 3d noise. just thought it works like this, too. :D

you could make a tp emitter and use a ball or box as a very small radius.. then add the deformation shatter to the object you will be emitting with a strength of 40% or so
you could add on a tp wind planer or some such to make the smoke more fluid then just using "spread"
add a good texture to the sphere and there you go
