View Full Version : Shave and a Haircut question..
Hi.
Anybody using Shave? Is it good or bad?
Can you post some examples?
(even animations.. some posts saying that that it got some flickering artifacts in its rendering engine..??)
Is it worth buying..?

From what i know it's the best hair-fur simulator out there, but i'd wait for the new engine, i think that's on the way to be released ;)

Yes, I bought it and I'm very happy with the results! Easy to learn, easy to use and worth the price.
I can't post anything I've done with it yet since I'm under non-disclosure. The galleries at the Shave site and Maxon site do show enough to get the idea.

well H.Ikeda has been messing with it so no doubt he will let you know.
you can now get it for maya so i can't see it being that bad...i think the idea was to compete with lightwave/worley sasquatch...however having user neither i couldn't comment. Also xsi hair stuff is an implementation of the same engine. joe alter is ex ilm so he should know a thing or two. really he is reponsible for bringing hair to the masses...as opposed to hair for movie budget prices. (i think he is currently working on shave extreme or something...dunno someone else might know)
what are you intending to use it for...cos it might just be overkill.

The hair in this pic was done with Shave: http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=34429
Overall I'm pretty pleased with it, although there are currently issues with flickering in animation and a few other bugs. As someone mentioned, Maxon is supposed to be updating the plugin to incorporate the same version of the hair engine used in the latest Shave release (Maya or XSI, can't recall). That should fix the flicker issue and improve the quality in general quite a bit.
Once you get the hang of the unique interface, the styling tools are pretty easy to use.
I used Shave to make the grass in this WIP:

Another example is shown in

(maybe still WIP, I'm now trying reflection on wavy surface and animation, but need much time)
Although there are limitations as a post effect, it's pretty good for hair, grass, fur making. Quality and ease to animate are excellent.
(for the limitations, http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=12977.)
I've just disappointed that particle modifiers don't affect Shave hair in R8, but it should be fixed in the next update, maxon said (anyway R7 is no prob).
Cheers
