View Full Version : Realistic Moth
CycloneS 05-04-2006, 05:17 PM Hey,
Here is a render of what I have been working on the last few weeks. It's an Eight-Spotted Forester moth. My goal is to make it as realistic as possible.
I will update this post when I make some progress :)
Comments are apreciated.

Looks nice so far, great work on the wings! I would like to see its legs, and some more angles. The fur looks nice already, keep working at it. Maybe experiment with diffrent lighting and maybe some nature backgrounds. Keep it up, im following it! :)

Thanks for the crits Wingless.
I'm working on the legs now. Really hard to do cuzz of all the black furr, hard to see where the legs attach to the body.
Man my post is already bumped down to like page 6...... :(

Its still a little cartoony to me...maybe the hairs need some desaturation in some place, and some more color variation to make it more realistic...also the surface of the abdomen is not sittign well with everythign else having hair and it being bald.
Nice modelling though...except the head seems to be rather spherical.

I finished modeling the legs, almost finished the modeling of the head.
Next i'm going to finish the uvs on the legs then put the fur on them.

Here is a new update. I added the hair to the legs and head and attached the antenna to the head.
Now I just need to finish the hair on the legs and fix the viens on the wings.

I got a new update :) I'm getting closer.... I fixed the furr a bit, made the veins on the wings smaller and rendered an ambient occlusion lighting setup.

Thanks. Yea I should post some reference. It's not very true to the references :( Its so hard to capture the likeness of the real animal!
Here is composite of all the layers in the final image.

Does anyone know how get transparent objects to work with ambient occlusion. How would I mask out the fringes of the wings so the occlusion pass doesn't show through?

Thanks
