View Full Version : Beveling Limitations..
moka.studio 05-04-2006, 02:20 PM I am one of those that got Hexagon2. through (that) strange offer.
I have been playing with it and am rather positively surprised. I still don't think it offers much more than C4d in terms of polygonal modeling, however there are some features that I wish I had for modelling in C4d.
Case in point is the Fillet/Bevel algorithms.
I am attaching a quick sample I did,
C4d really breaks down when having to produce complex Bevels, while Hex handles these much better. I hope this gets implemented in C4d, it makes a big difference for technical modeling.
Also,Hex has a Construction history for the Fillet tool, meaning you can apply it at the end of the modelling process, and be able to edit it later, with variable radii per point etc... This is also somthing that I really wish for in C4d. -

Good point about the bevel differences and thanks for posting. I too dl'd Hexagon2 to augment C4D.

i also hate cinemas bevel tool, i do all my beveling in xsi, its a bit of hassle exporting and importing, but saves alot of time cleaning up.
any plugin guys fancy making a better bevel tool?

Downloading now. :)
Cinema's beveling definitely needs work. I usually use Rhino for complex bevels, but it has problems of its own. Seems to me that Hex2 is a no brainer for $32!

Yes, I recommend it, the more I play with it the more I like it - it still feels a bit rough, and I hope that development will not be halted on it, but it is a good programm - the modelling worklow is easy to get used to.

I don't think it is too late,
there is a thread on the main CGtalk forum.
Basically DAZ ( which make poser props as far as I can tell), has bought Eovia out, and they have a really good offer for Hexagon ( www.eovia.com).
My personal opinion, it is highly worth it as complemen to C4d.

The deal is still on--I just bought in this morning. Unforunately their servers seem to be swamped; the Hexagon d'l is taking for*ever*.
What it is is that you get Hexagon 2 for $1.99 when you sign up for the Daz Platinum Membership. You can choose the monthly membership which costs $30 for the first month and around $8 for subsequent months.
Of course you can cancel as soon as you get your downloads, which I'm sure I'll do. As a bonus you get a bunch of free Poser-type stuff and discounts on other DAZ products.

Looks good. I too have battled with Cinema's bevel tools a bit, and it is possible to achieve a desirable result, but it is a royal pain.

oh right!! I got that email from DAZ, but I ignored it... Blast!!
thanks man...There's nothing like the smell of low priced software in the afternoon. (Especially when you live on an island where the exchange rate is $6.30TT to $1.00US)

So are you guys saying that you can model in C4d then export to Hexagon to bevel and finesse and import back into C4d - all without a hitch? Of course this means it all has to be poly models, right?
thanks!

I just got in the Bandwagon and got Hexagon from DAZ. The download is almost done and it has been only 15 minutes.

You're kidding! Mine took like five hours--couldn't get over 20kb/s.
Anyway, yes, you can exchange poly models quite easily between Cinema and Hexagon.
I've just played around with it for a few minutes, but it seems to be a pretty cool app. Clearly a steal at $32.

I am not kidding. The funny part is that I am almost done downloading the PC version now, and the Mac version is still far from finished decompressing with Stuffit. Decompressing the file takes longer than downloading it! Can you believe that??

Well, I don't really like to swith too much between apps.
However the import/export of polygon models seems to work fine between the 2 apps, and as mentioned Hex has some nice functions that are not available in c4d. So you can also start in Hex ( it also has some better IMO extrusion tools), bring into C4d to refine the mesh, the bring back to bevel (for technical stuff), or to use displacement brushes...
So if you need these kinds of functions for certain poly meshes, then at least the option is there.

Darn. Sounds like I'm going to have to spend $32 then...
Thanks for all for the info everyone!

There should be a DAZ serial number information mail be sent to you. So that's where to look. Maybe open your eyes first, before you go looking ;)

hey odo.
I have 4 eyes (REALLY big glasses), and still didn't see it ! :-)
The serial number email was in my Spam/Trash folder.
Since all the other DAZ mails got through I didn't bother to check there as well. (which I usually do)
Oh well, now I got it. yippididoo!
And remember, I warned you "I'm a loser baby, ..." ;-)
me go play now
cheers

I haven't checked the export formats yet/ What are the best ones between Hexagon and C4D? And can you keep quadrangles? What about N-Gons? Does Hexagon use them at all?

If you were a real loser you would have emptied your trash, and by mistake erased your HD, and then broke your glasses and fallen out the window. That's what happens to a real loser! But it might still happen to you ;)

Time will tell, odo ;-)

I just did a successful test in obj format using Riptide and got quadrangles. However, a boolean done in C4D imported well in Hex, but a boolean in Hex did not import as well in C4D.

Haven't had any problems with the couple of test that I have done,
as long as the mesh looked ok in Hex. You can always untriangulate in C4d,. - I exported simply as DXF btw, Obj should normally be even better.

334Mb, single executable, but you can download about another 250Mb of free stuff for being a Platinum member :) .

For $10 (£5.28) you can have your order burnt to a CD and posted to you. It gives you the option when you go through the checkout. :)
