Awesome work!! Really awesome! :airguitar
But I think her wrinkles in some places looks like cuts and scratches. I think you could set the contrast a bit lower. But that's perhaps personal taste (and it could be the lighting).. Anyways, I really love this chiq!!
This is really nice. However I feel the SSS is a bit over used. I get the impression she has no bones and is just a fleshy substance.

those wrinkle things on her neck look like cuts, too red and a bit too extreme IMO

I think the wrinkles are cool. They sure look exaggerated, but I think the model was exaggerated before you started texturing her. No real person has that large nose or big ears, so why can’t your model have exaggerated “grooves”? I think it looks great. Just give her nostrils, and make her eyes less milky. They look like a blind dog’s eyes. Maybe a little more ledge on the eyelid. Peach fuzz on the head? Hehe GREAT JOB!

Ditto on the too much S3... Curious about your texure maps. It is an excellent mapping job, could you post some decent rez images of the texture map. How much of it is modeled, textured, bumpmapped etc... Just curious...

What software/Renderer?
Yep I also think the SSS is overdone, but I like it that way.
SSS -> SubSurface Scattering -> So, the simulation of light scattered in/through and object (look at the nose).
A good example is how a lit candle looks.

Really cool caricature of an old woman...and sympathetic looking as well. You have managed to capture a soul in her..which is not easy to do in a 3D character. Stahlberg too captures it in his girls, in more places than one. ;P
Anyway, would like to see how you're going to do the body.
I think either Brazil or FR...don't think V-Ray has surface scatter. Or heck, if you have Max 5...then Lightscape engine?..........tell US!

Great model:applause:My only (humble) suggestion is that you add some bump to the nose. Alot of old people have craters on their nose that rival those on the moon... A result of spending an (almost) entire lifetime in the sun in a time when the dangers of long exposure to weren't really known.
SSS looks cool. Like someone else pointed out, if she had bones, the nose probably wouldn't be that translucent, but if she's a puppet... then I guess that's okay.
P.S. What is it with abbreviating SSS to S3 or 3S? I mean, I don't know about you, but typing that extra character REALLY takes it's toll on my time budget  It's like saying out aloud "P.O.W"... like, as if it had less syllables than "Prisoner of War."
Just my thoughts.

...Wow.
I have to say, this so far is my favorite model I've seen yet on CG Talk. I look forward to seeing more of her.
Did you reference the earrings? Or did you make them up? The reason I ask is because I am not sure if her jewellery suits her intricate and wrinkled skin... I would suggest smaller, highly crafted jewellery with meticulous detail.... but then again, you made her up and I didn't - so you would know better what her tastes are (so maybe I should shut up...:p? ).
Is she an old witch? or a cookie baking grandmother?

So the first tex map that you posted is the wire the second is the color the third is the bump, so what was the last one? was it the spec map? did you make them all in photoshop? (splat in photoshop?!) or did you make the map in photoshop and mixed it with procedural in max?
i didn't understand also the map extraction technic that you used.
how did you use the cylindrical uv's? did you detached any faces?the only way i know is to detach the faces and to apply planar mapping.
did you just used the profile wire for the cylindrical mapping?
anyway tanx for posting all the maps and wires, they are really grate and can be learned a lot from.

Wow I love the interaction of the lighting and the materials. I was sure it was some sort of raytrace luminosity trick but from what I gather from the other posts it has to do more with the renderer. so let me ask you straight out, what is your render setup. I am not familiar with the intimate details of final render or brazil only general functionality. Nice work thanks for posting the pick of the two different renders side by side.

Well, I'm not using any "raytrace trick" on this work. It's a very simple work with lights: 64 spot lights + 2 omnis (all with attenuation). The only trick is S3 (or 3S or SSS or Subsurface Scattering)... No special settings for FR: Samples 2, Rays 3, Blur 6,0 (on), Density 1,5, Multiplier 0,75, Thickness 10,0.
I repeat: this model is not a human, only a "realistic puppet" ;)

Great thread antropus :), I really like the house you’ve made for the old lady, what I’m especially found of is the color of the textures and the detail present in them dough I’m not saying that there perfect, what I think you should do is work a little more is on the way light hits the surface since you have your color maps down, I would say to make a specular map or work on it a bit more in order to add even more depth to the textures, for example parts that have some type of fluid should have a higher specular value or on the contrary, parts with wholes, scratches or in between the tiles for example should have a lower spec level. Like the floor right now looks a little washed out because of this, that’s because the parts in between each tile already looks very dirty but reflect at the same value as the other areas. I’m assuming your using max, since I read some were that you used brazil for rendering, another thing that could add even more depth to the textures is to use a diffusion map, for example areas that would have a higher specular/reflective value such as water drips and stains would have a lower diffusion value and areas that are less specular such as scratches or areas between the tiles would have a higher diffusion, basically a diffusion map is an inverted version of your specular map, then you could adjust the level to kind of was out the diffusion map a bit otherwise the diffusion effect would look too exaggerated, note that in max the diffusion option is only available trough raytrace type materials, diffusion would also prevent areas to look over lit of over saturated. What I normally do to my textures is that I scratch up the specular map even more especially on parts that a warn out on the color map such as on the edges, that will make the surface look even more beaten up and dirty. You probably already know all of this, maybe you didn’t have the time to apply, I just though I’d post it because your color maps are magnificent and could be taken to a whole new level of detail if you added as much attention as you did with the color maps to your specular and diffusion maps. On a final note, this is not necessary in any way but I just thought maybe you could add some dirt to it, its already stained every were but I couldn’t spot any dirt, the way I do my dirt is I paint a dirt mask map in photoshop, then use this mask for a blend material to combine a dirt shader with the shader you had before. Well keep it up, I’m looking forward to updates .

:applause: , cools sexy lady!
I like your style!
Amazing work you did! Really!
Details are very nice, the head is great and fun, the body too!
But i really think it's not in the same style! body is too toon compare with the head!
i think you need to fix some proportions to be coherant in your work!
But it's really nice and i will look at the progress!
Rrrrrrrrrrrrr! She is sooo HOT!!!! Would you mind posting her number?
Okay I think you should work on the proportions: the body is way too massive compared to her legs and arms. It looks more like she has stuffed some pillows under her clothes. I'd rather keep to the "skinny old lady type" the head indicates, so remove the belly and strech the whole torso. The head looks kind of set onto a wrong body to me. The hunch back is okay, but I would also decrease it a bit.
My oppinion so far. But it's awesome modelling work. You really got skills!
Go on! I want to see moooooore!!!
Greetings,

Very nice crits! Really thanx boys!
Well, I think the body will go with the head style at finished work (with textures and some model adjustments). I agree about the hunch back. I disagree a bit about the proportions of her body... I like proportions in this way, the "ugly way"
Realism and "cartoonism" in the same work... maybe it's "the way" of my short film
Stonefist:
Nothing special with her eyes, just a texture painted in photoshop with light blue and some refractions (in external object) for the final rendered image aspect.

maybe youve already answered this, and my eyes hurt from scrolling through all the replies, but i was wondering how you did the texture unwrap. i am totally blown away by the images you have used as textures.
i just read that you used a plugin called Textporter, is that specifically for one program or is it 3dsmax friendly?
i have never been great at texturing so youve inspired me. superb work

Thanx A LOT friend!!!!
Obrigadão pelos comentários, meu velho! :)
Obrigado novamente

Finally I have time to post something...
A little update of "grandma":
- First tests with hair and rollers. JUST A REFERENCE HA!... (wip);
- Some veins in her legs (wip);
- More detail on dress model (wip).
- No textures in her dresses and legs yet (wip)
- Sexy and discreet nipples :)
- Less hunchback;
- And ... A LOT OF OTHER THINGS TO DO :(

i think a few whiskers wouldnt do any harm... maybe some hair on the nose, chin, out of the ears? teh veins looks very nice (actually i mean well done, they look nasty) :)
when its finished can you do a HUGE render cause there's so much detail...
thanks,

p.s.really like the scar of her ear piercing... :0

splendid' work, really amazing man !
i think a few whiskers wouldnt do any harm... Hehehe! :D I'm with you here, cuse! Some fluffy hair would be surely good ;)
Antropus: Veeery sweet! I's getting better and better! Still there are some irregularities concerning the old girl's proportions. Right now she is a mixture of a bony skinny old woman (head, arms, legs) and a fat old mama (torso) with one feature not fitting to either side (hunchback, sized as it is now)...
But, don't get me wrong! This doesn't mean this isn't a great piece! It's definitely one of my most loved projects an CG Talk!
If you agree with me in the points I mentioned above, I'd suggest to do a compromise:
-add some flesh to her arms and legs (just a little!), maybe you could increase the size of her joints in order to let her limps look still bony.
- give her a cosmetic surgery in the belly region and remove some fat.
-move her whole back forth a lot! I think it's way too far back.
-finally: give me her phone number! I want to meet her now!!! :buttrock:
(Incredibly fine work! You rock :xtreme: )

Wonderful piece!
Looks fantastic.
For what's it's worth:
1. The breasts look strange to me in the sense that her shirt actually has pouches for them to fit into. They were really distracting my eye from looking at the other important features... now this may be your goal or else I am just fixated on old lady's breasts but I would prefer to see them sliding and flopping around around underneath the blouse rather than having their own sleeve :) (did I say "prefer"? well, you know what I mean)
2. I think her proportions are fine... my grandmother actually looks a little like this in proportion (sorry grandma). Very skinny legs and arms but pretty thick around the middle.
3. Good golly... does she have an unborn twin sister living in that hump of hers? That may be a little extreme but I might be subjective on that one.
Looks great!

I would have seen the humor in you modelling her naked
:scream:
Its great job so far, i would agree that the chestarea was what got my attention sinze as said, the breasts seam to form their own shirt-bags (?!)
Just love the huge slippers!
/Alice
there's some good suggestions here, but i think you should take them lightly... one of the main reasons its such an impact [for me], is the over-exaggerated limbs etc and, i think you would loose a great characature effect on the old bird if its altered too much.
i can't(!) wait any longer for the animation :)
cuse
Wow, it's just fantastic. This texture is incredible!
