View Full Version : X2 4800+ freezing problems

Hi all, I recently assembled my new system but it constantly (and seemingly at random) freezes up. This can even happen if I'm doing nothing (just have windows running).

System specs:
AMD X2/64 4800+
MSI KN8 Neo4 Fi
2x1 Gb DDRAM
Leadtek nvidia 7900 GT
WD Raptor 72 GB
Hitachi Deskstar 250 Gb
Enermax Liberty 500W

The problem actually started when trying to install windows - it freezed up a couple of times during installation until i managed to install them correctly. Then I went on to install motherboard and graphics drivers, and that went on without a hitch, so I proceeded to install PC Alert 04 (as it was included in mobo's software bundle). PC Alert immediately started to play an alarm for low CPU fan RPMs (about 860) and too high CPU voltage (1,98)
BTW CPU temperature is always at pretty normal levels - 37-38 C in BIOS, up to 42 C in Windows. I installed corresponding AMD's processor driver and their small util, the processor power monitor, which says each core works at the nominal voltage - 1.35 V. Since this is AMDs original application, I assume it to give more accurate readings then the PC Alert, which I hear doesn't work well with nforce4 chipsets anyway (So I removed it). I checked the BIOS settings a million times, and everything is at safe values. CPU voltage and extra voltage is set to be automatically determined at startup. I even tried flashing the BIOS, but I already have the latest version. I will try the memtest diagnostic when I get back from work today, but my gut feeling tells me it's a problem with the motherboard, not RAM. At any rate, everything I tried so far got me nowhere and the freezing problem persists. (freezing, as in computer completely unresponsive, you only have a pic on your screen of whatever was running atm,and only the reset switch or power off button help). If anyone has ANY ideas I'd be most grateful...

This thread has instructions on how to install the recommended hotfix and patch for X2s.

Good idea, but not convinced it will solve your problem, as you had troubles actually installing windows.

Not really familiar with MSI, so you should probably try and find an MSI related forum. Here's one for you. It is an overclockers forum, but they should have some advice for you.

It seems you've got most things in order. I wonder if it's a bios or memory issue. In my DFI for instance I have to put the memory in the orange slots, it doesn't like the yellow ones.

Maybe worth running memtest, to check whether your sticks of ram are okay.

In fact I rma'd one board and spent about 4 days trying to get my memory to run in dual. Even with DFI tech assistance couldn't resolve it. Turned out that I had to set a setting called 'drive strength to 9'. I found that out by trial and error. The reason I'm waffling about this, is that it's easy to point the finger at hardware as being the problem. Would look more into your recommended bios settings.

Good luck

Thanks man.. but I already resolved to take it to the shop where I bought the CPU, motherboard and RAM, they have their service and tech support, and have agreed to have a look at it. I'll let them tinker with it for a few days, I can survive on the PIV 2.53 for that long :) I wanted to run memtest and HDD diagnostic tools today, but they are open until 18:00 and I finish work at 16:30 so it will be a race to get to them as it is... and if I make it to them today, they just might be done with it by tomorrow - so I might have the new system up and running during the weekend :) Here's hoping...

Much better idea:) Will be interested to know what the problem was.

Well, I took her to the shop, they said they'll call today and expect to either resolve the problem or at least know what was causing it by afternoon today. Will report back as things develop... as I see there are more people out here with the same problem, hopefully this will help them to resolve it as well.

Ok, here's an update.. I called the techs I left my computer with... they say that they unplugged the second HDD (250 Gb Hitachi SATA II drive I use for storage) and the computer's been working fine for hours now.. and they've been doing all sorts of tests, memtest, 3dmark, various other benchmarks.. you name it. Come to think of it, almost every freeze-up happened when copying or otherwise doing something with that HDD... either copying or formatting... hmm. He also said memory was not in dual-channel mode, and for the 4800+ it really should be. Don't know what to think.. will see when I go and pick it up today. If it's just the HDD, great!

Okay, sounds positive. When he says the memory wasn't in dual mode, the reason for this is probably that you had the memory in the wrong slots. On asus and dfi boards you need to put the memory in same colour slots, not slots necessarily right next to each other. If you put them in different colour slots they run in single mode. Does that make sense?

Makes complete sense. My RAM sticks were in the same colour slots, 1 and 3. Now they are in 1 and 2 (thats green and purple..) and I'm happy to report that the problem has been completely solved. No more crashing, freezing, anything even after I plugged in the second hard drive. So it was the RAM.

thats great news you got it sorted :applause: I have updated the bios on mine to see if that helps me - was still on my original factory one (shame!) I am a little confused though, where on the start up does it say its runing in dual channel mode? I have taken 2 512mb sticks out and left 2 in the same colour slots that are right next to each other on my Epox board. On start-up it just says memory testing 1024mb OK but no mention of dual channel mode. I was a bit confused about this in the manual when i was first setting it up. However I have been filling all my slots (4 x 512mb) previously so shouldn't really make a difference for me! or are they paired in the factory so I should not mix them around? I don't know - sounds unlikely!

Il give swapping the ram to opposite colours a try.

This little app will tell you. Under the memory tab -> channels

http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php

Look top left of page for download. It's only a few hundred k.

Cheers

I got two sticks of RAM, 1 Gb each, but dual channel should work if you got all the slots filled.. Are all 4 sticks exactly the same (same manufacturer/model)? Although, I heard somewhere that all nforce4 based boards give you problems if you got all 4 memory slots filled with more then 1 Gb of RAM in total... will try to check on this when I get back from work.
