I have some old c4d files from feb 2003 and I can't get them to open with either of the above versions of c4d. Are versions pre 8 not compatible with c4d now?

not that i'm aware, all older files should open. the only way i know of that it wont open is if you try and open a file saved in a newer version of cinema in an older version.

you can try sending the file to maxon and they can look at it, see if the file has become corrupt. does it open in the version of c4d you were using then? are you missing some specific plugin you were using back then? if the plugin saves it's own information in certain locations within the scene (this is down to the developer) then that will cause files to not open if you try and open without the plugin.

It may be corrupted. I am not sure. I tried others from before these ones and they worked fine. It's only 3 files and it won't take me long to rebuild.

thanks for the advice

Do they use any plugins? Sometimes plugins can refuse to read data and that just means CINEMA reports the file won't load. If you do get a bad open sometimes it can read back if you remove plugins or modules (depends on what is failing).
