View Full Version : This Is Extremely Frustrating
howzit 05-04-2006, 01:40 AM There is a known bug when doing the tutorial on Base80's site that has the mouse and cord using splin dynamics.
I need to do a baloon animation with a string attached to the end that kinda just floats arouns, The spline dynamics tag works PERFECTLY, but you cannot save the file or it will crash. Not only does it crash Cinema, it will leave your fule corrupted. So i just lost 2 days of work, thank you very much Maxon.
At any rate, is there an ulternative to this? I have phytools....will this work?? Lets hope MoGraph is not this useless.

You don't save your files incremental?
Better do that, please don't blame others for not following the basic rules
of computer usage:
- save often
- save incremental
- make backups
Now to your problem:
I did that before with a simple bone chain (4-6 bones) on the cord
using IK with a target that was animated using vibrate at a low rate.
Another way can be Rui's experiment "Rope dangeling in water (http://www.ruimac.com/experiments.htm)"
good luck,

Hey Sneaker, thanks for the link. Ill check it out.
I noticed that you are in Germany, Im not sure how good your English is, but i will try to explain a little better. The file itself, after trying to save, gets courrupted, Cinema does not even recognise it as a .c4d file. The minute you hit save, the file crashes and gets corrupted. So what does increament and save have to do with it? Do you mean that i can just open a previous file just to corrupt aswell? I am not sure if this is what you mean? And i dont understand why I should not complain if an application corrupts a file on trying to save it? Is this what is suppose to happen?
Usually when you save a file it gets saved, not corrupeted, at least thats what im used to.

A solution i am guessing, is to finish doing everything, and then just before hitting render, paste in the objects with the spline dynamics tag, then hit render without saving. Once the render is done, delete the object or tag, then save the file. So long as you dont try to save the file, it seems very stable, only saving the file is what causes the crash and corruption.

This bug has been reported many times and the workaround. The file may not actually be corrupt, simply the spline dynamics didn't save its data right so refuses to load it back so CINEMA reports the file won't open. Remove hair and try loading it again, CINEMA will just skip the hair data. This is fixed in 9.6.

Thanks obeardy,
I was beggining to feel bad for blamming the software thinking that this is infact a NORMAL and natural thing, and that i should just smile when it happens.
Is 9.6 available for download yet, i just tried looking at the Maxon site and they dont have it up. This is going to be a much wlecome upgrade.......
Any news as to when it will be available, I have been out of the loop the last couple of weeks...

Its far from normal, just a pity is slipped through testing. Its not good to have any work lost, its happened to me in the past. I lost weeks of work when I was less paranoid, now I save backups every hour or so and then burn backups every week and have backups on a second system too. But thats just me :)

Sorry no idea and I don't think anyone will until it is released, or if they did know I bet they can't say.

Ah, cool, thanks man,
i think im back in with the flock now, we will just wait for the release....
Mac open GL speedup, null export and Spline dynamics fix, plus MoGraph whooowhoo.
Now bcak to this problem...hmmmm ok cool, ill just do the render and dont save method....

The save problem was caused by some data not initialised on adding the tag, so it isn't saved so then open can't find the data so fails. If you keep a backup copy of your file, then try the workaround (do a search on here) it will be fine afaik. The workaround is basically to add the tag, then undo, then redo. This forces the system to init the missing data due to the copy into the undo then back again. Test it first to be sure.

My English should be good enough to understand, but the explanation above
shed some light to the hole situation. I thought you lost your mesh etc, too.
Fortunately you didn't.
I usually make a copy of the file before I open it and I regularly use the save incremental
function builtin since 9.5.
Of course you are right, something like corrupting a file while saving should not be
happen. In addition Cinema should be able to open files that have been corrupted in some
way, restoring what can be restored and leaving the mess out.
I'm glad you found a solution.
All the best,

Not sure if this'll help...but this file does basically the same thing as the tutorial however it doesn't use the Constraint system. It uses Expresso to pin the spline to the 'ballon' geometry.
It does use Spline Dynamics for the animation of the spline.
Give it a spin. Lemme know...

^^^ Hey Chris,
Its chris, i was there a few months back and did some trianing with you. Thanks for the file. works really well!!
So if we were to say that the ballon is filled with heliam and is tied down by the rope, i can just duplicate the expresso point set up, and fix the bottom point to a null. That way, the bottom of the string is fixed and wont move so long as the new null does not move?
I will try this shortly, but am on something else right now...

All you would need to do is duplicate part of the expression pinning the end point to a null. All of the pieces of the expression you would need are there, you just need to relink the Object Nodes.
I also believe that in order for the dynamics to work properly, you'll need to select that point (the new pinned one) and set its Mass to 0. You'll find the settings to do that in the Spine Dynamics tag.
...or just follow this...;) Still needs to be torqued around, but the idea is there.
