maybe you can buy some tutorial books or get tutorial from the internet. There are also some useful information in here:
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/search-handle-url/002-4660984-8376827?%5Fencoding=UTF8&dym=0&search-type=ss&index=stripbooks%3Arelevance-above&field-keywords=modeling%20character%20max

also search around cgtalk and you can get lots more info.
Good luck~ ^_^
aw man... I feel for you, half the time I do not know what mine is teaching about...

I suggest u to look for some tuts in www.3dtotal.com (http://www.3dtotal.com) they them for nearly all 3d packages (I mean highend 3d modeling programs), including Max (not sure if there is for V8 but I am sure I saw lorts for 7 and below ) besidwes they cover eveythning from modeling to texturing, rigging, animating, and lighning. I sugges u to look for Joan of ARC tutorial in 3d smax section It is the modt detailed char modeling tut for mX i HAVE EVER SEEN SO FAR.

In addition to the above suggestions, you can also check out the 101 series of Max tutorials at: http://forums.ego-farms.com
Also, there's an organic modeling tutorial at: Organic Modeling Video Tutorial Series (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=353388)
It may be a little advanced, but it goes over how to model from reference images and some of the nifty tools available in EditPoly and Max8. Let me know if you have any questions and good luck!

Practise makes perfect, mate. Many people learn by their own, so do not only blame the school. Follow the tutorials people posted, practise ,practise and practise. Study study and study. All sort of shapes. Rome wasn't built in a day.
