View Full Version : AE 7 timeline error
WillRyan 05-03-2006, 10:54 PM While scrubbing the timeline I recieved this pop-up of doom:
After Effects error: Gaussian Blur returned invalid max_result_rect from PF_Cmd_SMART_PRE_RENDER
(25 :: 237)
I tried swapping out the Gaussian Blur with a Fast Blur to no avail. Adobe's boards had a couple entries from others expereiencing the same issue while using Levels and Invert effects. But nothing on how to solve the issue has popped up yet. I tried fiddling with Open GL settings, then just disabling OpenGL all together, and still nothing.
Any ideas on the cause of the problem or a workaround? Also, does anyone know of a listing of all the known error codes and their corresponding definitions? It would be a great help in diagnosing issues like these for sure.

1. What are the pixel dimensions of your comp?
2. Pixel dimension of the layer that is generating the error?
3. What is your layer, video footage, framerender from 3d app, precomp, etc.?
4. And I always hate to ask this one, but is this a legit version of AE or a cracked copy? I only ask because cracked copies have all sorts of odd bugs that you'll be hard pressed to solve - they exist because the software is hacked!
5. Have you tried restarting AE? Sometimes, when working on enormous comps for HD work I get framebuffer problems that a restart tends to fix.

While it's a valid question, I don't think it is something to blame on. Anyway, the error message points to the filter being unable to create a cache for the image buffer. This is a known issue and has to do with the new SmartFX pipeline. Basically in this scenario one effect stops the other from using its pixel buffer. There is no fix for this other than to restart the application. In some cases purging the cache manually also helps.

Well that's not really true at all. A lot of cracked software has been known to be missing features, crash randomly and have all sorts of problems. It wasn't more than a month ago that someone on another AE board was having issues no one could solve, and finally fessed up that they were using a cracked version. It had something to do with registry issues or some such.
Anyway, good call on the solution to this one, was well beyond my scope of knowledge!

Thanks for the advice Mylenium; I somehow knew you would have the answers! :)
And for the record, we're using legitimate copies of AE. After spending a semester teaching a 3D class, that would be one of my first questions as well. I'm amazed at how bizarre the errors can get when you see half a classroom of kids using cracked copies of 3D programs.
Thanks again!
