Ok I'm going to be modeling this so I though I could get some feedback as I work. Off the bat I have a few questions.

What do you think is the best way to begin modeling this?
I'm using 3dsmax5

I need to mesh to be very accurate + I don't want to end up with an ubber dense mesh that is unusable.

Suggestions on how to start would be appreciated. In the mean time I'll begin playing around and post my progress.

anyhow, here is the reference image... its a bit large:

Thanks for you input.

Ok, well I reduced the image size above. Its about half the size now thank god. I've whiped up a quick spline outline of the tire so far... still trying to decide how i'll go about actually making it...

I think its gonna end up being polymeshed together... Anyhow heres the outline.

Ok, I'm getting closer with the complete spline outline... heres a shot of the viewports:

I'm not quite sure about the curvature because I don't have many refs of this wheel so if anyone can correct me now, i'd appreciate it.

Finally... I got the mesh working. Also I compressed some of the eairler images... here is a screen cap from the viewport. Its just a rough cut surface from using surface tools... I'm probably going to convert it into a polymesh to tweak it but I still need to fix some things in st first. C&C on the mesh so far please...

Might look like a little backwards progress... I just spent the last who knows how long stitching all those meshes together and making sure all the edges are smooth... heres a pict...

i only modeled half the segment you see here... it was then mirrored... i just need to make copies of this and mesh them together to make my wheel whole.

I'm still tweaking but input would be appreciated.

Im not quite adept with spline modelling but thats looking pretty damn good!

I like what you have here but I think you would have had a better time if you used Rhino. Rhino is perfect for stuff like this.

I've always wanted to give rhino a try... Don't have the extra cash to spend right now on it... :I I'm trying to get a new comp plus the max upgrade set me back a few...

Anyhow, perhaps in the future ... I do realize that nurbes would have made this a lot easier... but in retrospect, it didn't turn out too bad in max IMO

heres a quick render.... crap texture and default lighting...

muahahahaha, i was very impressed when i saw the first image
thought was your 3D render...kind realistic one, but it s real model...hahahah

nice beginning for your modeled wheel

Looking very good indeed Aaron:) I like it a lot.

Manicalavera15: my final mesh should look just like it :) If i get a chance i'll try replicate that image!

Hell Render : must be from my lack of sleep :p

Not much progress just added some detials... Need to texture it soon :)

What tires should i do?

put in the BMW logo and it will look perfect

Ok here is the textured one... C&C please...

I'll start a new thread about modeling the tire part next... anyone have any suggestions for which tires I should model onto this?

Here are the final renders. Right now it takes a bit over a min to render these this

Just in case you didn't read above heres my question again :

^BUMP^

I'm still looking for what tire to model onto this wheel. Maybe one of you BMW nuts know which ones are standard... I"m looking for somewhat slim tires to fit onto this and I would like to find some reference images for that tire...
