Got Game? Survey Ranks Top Cities in America for Video Gaming

Seattle confirmed as epicenter of interactive entertainment by Microsoft and Sperling’s BestPlaces.

REDMOND, Wash. -- May 2, 2006 -- Seattle, known for coffee, grunge rock music and airplanes, now has a new crown. Microsoft Corp. and Sperling’s BestPlaces today bestowed on the title of top video gaming city in the United States. Seattle edged out larger metropolitan areas the center of the interactive entertainment such as New York, Chicago, Los Angeles and Washington, D.C., as universe for both console and Microsoft® Windows®-based PC gaming in a survey analyzing select consumer behaviors in the gaming industry.

“The large amount of games played on Xbox Live® and the high number of video games owned put Seattle at the top of list, but clearly the survey confirms that games are sweeping the U.S.,” said Bert Sperling, founder of Sperling’s BestPlaces.

Sperling commissioned the survey based on the number of video game systems owned per household — Xbox 360™, Xbox®, Window-based PCs, PlayStation 2 and GameCube — number of games purchased, number of game rentals, and frequency of online gameplay via Xbox Live or Windows games, among other factors.

The top 15 U.S. gaming cities are as follows:

1.

Seattle

2.

Minneapolis-St. Paul, Minn.

3.

Atlanta

4.

Detroit

5.

Phoenix-Mesa, Ariz.

6.

Washington, D.C.

7.

St. Louis

8.

Boston

9.

San Diego

10.

Philadelphia

11.

Chicago

12.

Dallas

13.

Houston

14.

San Francisco

15.

New York

The video game industry is growing in popularity among all age groups and both genders. The average age of a gamer is 30, and 19 percent of gamers are older than 50. Men currently dominate the industry; however, the gap is closing, with approximately 55 percent of players being male and approximately 43 percent female.*

this is a survey about games being played, not being made. cool down everyone.

one other factor is that Seattle has a huge Asian population. also, Seattle seems to have a young [wealthy] population that never out grew video games and are buying game systems for their little ones.

doh!
Guess I should have read more carefully. I thought this was for game development, not game playing.

Maybe someone start another thread for that? :D

Seattle's a prime candidate since it's soggy all the damn time. I believe it. Plus, Mr. Softy and nVidia are up there as well. Perfect climate to stay indoors and blow stuff up.

peace,

No Los Angeles?! I guess too many people getting out of the house for their fun. :shrug:30 minute drive in the winter and you got tons of snow of snowboarding and sking. and i think there are more bikes and bikes path then cars and streets.

Perfect climate to stay indoors and blow stuff up.instead of snow in the winter, we get rain. so we can still enjoy the winter and not have to worry about digging are cars out of the snow. summers are awesome because there is always a breeze and no humidity. oh, and we're also #1 when it comes to games!

I for one would like to know exactly how they came to these conclusions. I would suspect Dallas , Austin, and Houston to be much higher up on the list.

lazyPhoton, I don't remember the exact ranking of game development cities, but it was different listing from the list posted in this thread. I don't find it surprising that the centers for game development studios don't have the highest level of game players. In terms of game development studio concentration I think it's -

1. S.California - 1.Los Angeles/2.San Diego

2. N.California -(Silicon Valley) 1.San Francisco /2.San Jose

3. Texas - 1.Austin(Silicon Hills)/2.Dallas/3.Houston

4. Seattle

6. Boston

7. Washington D.C./Baltimore

8. Chicago

9. N.Carolina - Research Triangle - Raliegh-Durham (is Charlotte 3rd city?)

The ranking may be off a little, but those are the main centers right now. I don't think I missed anyone. You can't go wrong with the top three. New York, Atlanta, and Orlando are somewhere in the mix as well. A lot of these cities are what I would call "multimedia cities" in that they offer a little bit of gaming, a little video, and a little web. So it's kind of hard to say if they're really strong in just one thing, like gaming, because a lot of the houses offer a variety of services. California is unique in that it has a clear strength in both film and gaming and a clear weakness when it comes to cost of living. That's why options 3, 8, 9 are not bad choices either.

Why do you hate genderless hermaphrodites so much?

JeroenDStout

If they would be, it'd mean that genderless hermaphrodites play more games than non-genderless hermaphrodites, considering that the percentage of genderless hermaphrodites in a given population is surely lower as 2%, so more genderless hermaphrodites would have to play games to become that 2%.

Yeah lazyphoton. Canada has some areas as well that are just as strong as the U.S. sites I listed. I just listed U.S. cities because the gaming poll was only U.S. based. I don't have any official results to site, but I do recall reading somewhere about a ranking similar to the one I posted. I've found that ranking to be pretty true from personal studio hunting as well. In terms of international development, Japan is very strong and Canada is competitive as well. I think they have some things going on in Brazil and England as well. I'm interested to hear from people who live in those areas.
