yup.. I'm very curious about this subject..

has anyone any idea which is the fastet in max?
Radeon 8500 or the GeForce 3 xxx.. mostly polygon wise..

this benchmark clearly gives the radeon a BIG lead (High polygon count tests and others).. but it's only 3dmark 2001 and not max...
http://www.hardocp.com/reviews/vidcards/ati/8500_revisited/index2.html

so I was wondering if the programmable GPU on the GF3 could turn the benchmarks in favour of nvidia.. in max ofcause..

any experience or knowledge on this subject would be highly apprechiated?

this is not ment to start any hardware flaming or anything.. =O)

hmm.. ok interesting.. I was on the brink of ordering a Radeon 8500.

well, having a ferrari with flat tires doesn't make sense...
I also read later, that radeon cards have a tendency to crash... not very good when max 4.x is unstable enough.

have you any idea of how bad the viewport errors really are?

is it like bad, bad.. or something you can learn to live with..

I have a GeForce 256 now.. It's not always good at sorting and clipping polygons. But you can do work arounds and still live with it.

I have a Geforce3 Ti200 and it is amazing for 3dsmax4. I used to have a FireGL 1000 Pro (circa 1997). But when I got my new computer, I was sorta nervous about it, but Nvidia did a good job. One of my friends got a Radeon 8500 and he's been having some major probs (viewport tearing and such) with it. So, imho and probably his, go with a geforce3. they don't have nearly so many problems as ati's cards do.

ok.. thanks for the info.

guess i'll drop that radeon idea.
now I'm only down to either buying a really cheap GF3 TI200 now or wait 2 weeks/a month+, to see what the GeForce 4 will bring us.

only problem.. the initial GF4 launch card, will most likely be hella expensive.. and we will probably not see the cheaper models in the first 2-3 months. And then we'll even have to wait until the price drops.

argh.. this is hard.. =O)

i did a little bit of research (i.e. shopping around) and i found a geforce3 ti200 for $160. Its a Palit Microsystems brand tho. (1)

If you want a more common brand name, I also found a PNY geforce3 ti200 for (interestingly) $160. (2)

well, since they both matchup price wise. i'd say go with the PNY. mind you, these companies are all US based so you'd have to see about intl shipping charges.

I just bought a new system with an ATI all-in-wonder x600 256MB video card and I am very disapointed! All the extras like capture/tv+fm tunner/Outs / INs worth nothing when you can't use max/maya properly...

:(
New drivers ain't help! All MAXes (4/5/6) are the same... I quess Mayas tho...
Any ideas besides new videocard ?

Try running Max in Direct x instead of Open GL. My Radeon 9600 has some slight wireframe problems with Open GL too. Not as bad as that though. That's not going to help with Maya though.

I'd try and get in touch with ATI support if I were you. That's a pretty bad anomaly.

Absolutely no difference b/w DirectX 8.1/9 and OpenGL...
But I'll try to contact ATI about that... thought I don't believe they will help much!
Thanks!

Perhaps try an older driver version. I had a problem with a different piece of software that I thought a driver update would fix, but it actually made the problem a lot worse and I was forced to revert to my previous driver version.

But I'd still recommend trying to get in touch with ATI support if you can find some way to get through to a human being.
