Hi,

Is there anyone on here in the UK who has bought Modo from Luxology and can tell me if EU VAT is added to the $695 price. Some USA software companies seem to add it on and others don't.

Thanks

I'd go with the download option...I got hit with about £70 ontop of modo's price for the courier to "take it through" customs.

This was with modo 101, but I'm sure it will still be around that price.

Cheers.

I got mine through download its quick and easy, luxology give you temp key then they give you a full one and you can download it as many times you wan't.

The only thing they don't give you with download is the tutorial dvd.

Hope that helps.

Definately go with the download option. It is identical to the boxed version apart from the fact that you get nothing to hold. All of the manuals and videos are available through your account.

I got hit with that £70 import fee as well.

Only UK/EU businesses can charge you VAT. If an American company has a UK office then they must charge VAT otherwise you don't and shouldn't pay it.

I didn't get charged VAT when I bought the download version of Modo ( first version that is) back at the beginning of last year.

Matt

They don't charge you VAT, they charge you Custom Duties. I believe they look at the value of the goods and add on a charge that they feel you would have paid in VAT. Don't ask me how they work it out, because I swear they just guess half the time, I order hockey equipment from the states a lot and the charges are different everytime!

The only way around it is to ship it to a friend in the states, then get them to ship it to you as a gift - you don't have to pay duty then.

I ordered 101 as download only, this time I'm going to order the product delivered and pay the extra duty because I think I will appreciate having the manual.

Eh, scratch that, the shipping cost on full product is $75 plus add the customs charge which will be anything between £40 and £80 and I'll be paying well over an extra £100 ($180) for the box and manual!

Download only for me then ;)

Maybe we can get Lux to sell us the manual as a book, I don't think you have to pay duty on books? At least I don't have to when I buy from Amazon.com

MattUnfortunately Matt, while you are right in saying that an American company should not charge you VAT...that doesn't mean you don't have to pay it anyway. It's a Tax charged by the Government. Normally, this is 'collected' and passed to the Taxman by the company selling the product. When you buy something from outside the UK, Customs and Excise, C&E, take on the collector role but the charge remains the same. As for the variable calculations. VAT is fixed at 17.5% but exchange rates change from day to day. C&E base their figure on the stated value on the package and the exchange rate on that particular day, not on the pounds figure that appears on your credit card statement. Also, there is always a handling charge which can vary quite a lot, especially if they decide they have to open the package to check the contents.

The Taxman is getting far too good at collecting his money

It is not the taxman that is getting good at it, 'he' is still the same. FedEx, UPS, DHL etc on the otherhand are right bastards :) They phoned me when my Modo 101 package arrived and asked if I wanted to pay an administrative fee for handling the VAT. If I did they would ship it to me straight away otherwise I would have to wait about a week for it. The fee was 300 danish kr. AFAIR on top of the VAT.

So I told them where to shove it.

Not modo.

The fee :)

I've been annoyed by this situation lately (no i haven't bought Modo btw).

Don't you think its strange that some companys add VAT at the "checkout" for downloadable goods and some do not add VAT, there is no sence in this other than the companys that are charging VAT simply stick it in there own back pocket ! i suspect, they have seen an opportunity to charge more, simple as that IMO

It basically boils down to whether and where the company has a registered office in the EU. I bought the Macromedia DreamWeaver suite as a download and got charged VAT at 19%!!! Even though the purchase went through Macromedia's office in Edinburgh. Their registered office is in the Netherlands and that is the VAT rate they are obliged to charge. Rip off Britain (again).

If they charge VAT and don't pass it on the Vatman then assuming they're in the UK they're in big trouble. HM C & E have powers that make the Bill's fade into insignificance (speaking as ex-Bill).
