Been working on this today, he's going to be an alien pilot, but I've got kind of stuck on what style of head to give him, any ideas? chuck em this way, textures are temporary, just to show what's skin and suit  :bounce:

try a material like this for the pink parts, it would be ultracool! http://www.eklettica.com/images/artworks/zeus.jpg

Cool :)

For a head how about a big round cartoony type head.

Yeah cartoon type head with big nose and large oval eyes would be perfect :)

give it a cartoony helmet, that would be cool... :bounce:

hey looks really cool so far! i'd also put him a cartoony helmet on the head. and i totally agree with thirdeye's suggestion on the pink shader. that'd be ultracool! :D

Why does everything have to have a single head?

I say give him 3 heads! :arteest: Challenge yourself and make all 3 of the heads share 1 eye (imagine how that would work eh?). This could be your characters handicap! Or it could be your characters power.

That texture thirdeye shows us here is very inspiring! :bounce:

easy like the three ladies in Disney's hercules, they take the eye out and pass it on to the other ;)

is it a he/she?
is it good/bad?
where are they from (environment wise)?
how do they sense things (eyes, ears, tentacles, nose, beak, hair, skin)
etc...
are you going for cartoon....what sort of personallity/characteristics do they have?

i'd like to see him as a cross between a very upset Duck-Billed Platypus with a shorter beak...larger eyes...and a small helmet/cap.....Oooh yeah and orange in colour! Ooops sorry got carried away their....your choice bud....think about the above questions at it might help you formulate your concept better....if not you can always go for a pink billy goat look!

Ugh, I never saw that movie. That's really annoying. :annoyed:

How about another way of getting the eye from head to head? Like it's part of the suit?

Or maybe the 3 heads are separate and then connected by one big frickin' eye? eh? How about that? Ever seen that in a Disney film? I don't think so! :)

Hrm . . I need to back off on the coffee . . .

I like it very much...
I'm a complete newbie when it comes to texturs... So how did u do the "dirty" kind look on the metal plates? Metal shader and the create the dirt in Photoshop with an alpha layer?

squidinc
01-06-2003, 01:58 AM
I used a metal shader and then had a seperate dirt shader on top of the metal one which does have an alpha channel buts its a procedural shader not photoshop :)

he looks terriffic! although, for animation i would give him a bit of a neck. otherwise you might get into trouble having him look down or turn his head without affecting the mesh of his shoulders. looking forward to see this guy in motion! :)

LucentDreams

for animatin I'd be more concerned about how he bends over, the suit is pretty uhm solid in the groin area not much room for bending, of course that reduces the risk of chafing

Beechdbum
01-06-2003, 06:17 AM
looks great, did you consider using purple for the button and googles instead of blue, and then going back to the brown eyes, mayybe its just me and liking that color scheme of purple, green, and brown, but anyways, its worth a try, keep up good work

kiwi
01-06-2003, 09:45 AM
Very cool

I was just thinking when you animate him/her/it the side bag is going to move around quite a bit as the body bends etc,so maybe you could make a couple of clips and clip it tightly to the body and cheat some :)

Hey Squid!

Any snow on those welsh hills yet? I'm hoping to take my boy over to Moelfammer (spelling?) over the weekend with the sledge.

And maybe sink a beer in the Druid Arms.

animate it my friend!!!
I took a look to the your posts in renderosity.
It seems you're fast as a lightning in modelling and texturing!!!
keep up good work!!!

p.s.: I like more your shaders than your model..............but if I gave a "perfect" to your shaders, I give a "superb" to your model!!

cheers everyone, I'll start work his ship soon

stevedeer, yeah it's been pretty damn cold where I am ( near Rhyl ) and ice was making driving "interesting" to say the least, I think its thawing out slowly, maybe good sledge weather higher up though :)

DeathCarrot

:bounce: wahay the pilot's really cool.. cant wait to see the ship, i seen a few of your models in the gallery, you are seriously the best thing that happened to procedural shaders! proves you dont need mad photoshop skillz for photorealistic textures.. great job man, keep up the great work! :applause:

flingster

waaaahey....cool.

(so damn glad you canned the Duck-Billed Platypus or pink goat ideas....yours is so much better cool head).

i know you shouldn't ask things like this of cartoony character but....how does he go pee....ring pull! :applause:

Ok sorry:shame: shame on me.....i like the way its going bud....as you might have gathered on here....it goes from one request to the next (which i'm also guilty of)....wheres the head?......wheres the textures?......wheres the lighting?......are you gonna animate him or what?.....where's his spaceship?.....wheres his mothers...uncle...etc....my advice is keep going with what you got cos its really coming along goodie.....:buttrock:

this is some sweet job!
Show us your rig!!!!!! :applause: :applause:

squidinc
01-07-2003, 11:41 PM
so far this rig is just for posing so its VERY basic :D , no where near anything good enough to use for animation, he doesn't even have a spine :hmm:, I'll rig him properly once I get my head round the mocca tools :p

sanciok, have you done anim tests with the rig you setup on your magician character? I'm interested to see what results people can get using mocca
:bounce:

wesware
01-08-2003, 12:27 AM
I think his sidekick should be some gelatinous, transluscent, jelly-like worm/slug thing that sits on his shoulder :)

I have a mocha rig for a low poly robot if you'd like to check it out.

sanciok
01-08-2003, 12:36 AM
squidinc: I'm working on the enviroment rigth now, than i'll go with storyboard and animatic.
Than i'll start some animation tests!!

squidinc
01-08-2003, 12:38 AM
hehe thats a cool idea I could have a really nervous little blob thing ( kind of like scrat from ice age ) and a sarcastic pain in the ass robot that does nothing but complain :applause: :bounce:

cheers wesware, got a link where I can download that mocca rig? :D :buttrock:

I know people are always "wining" 'could you please make a tutorial' and stuff like that when they (& me) see something great like this. I know it takes a lot to write a tute and some people just dont care to share their experience but since there really isn't that much new tutorials for cinema these days - I'd like to get some tips on your modeling techniques you use with these fantastic characters. I visited Your site and there's really great stuff in there too. I assume you are modeling w/ box/hypernurbs but how do you get such results - f.ex the suit and helmet?? Any help is greatly appreciated - and keep it going!

wow wonderful character ! what modeling methods did you use ?

flingster
01-08-2003, 08:04 PM
nice touch coming along nicely.

love to see a robot sidekick....how about he comes out of his belt pack....loads of (30 odd) angle poise arms with mech tools on the end...spikey, rusty, and cranky. which would allow him to come out of that small pack and yet extend himself to a larger size rather spider like only shed loads more arms, legs, extensions etc etc.

hey there squid, just joined here at cgtalk and was pleasantly surprised to see your work here. I really enjoyed seeing your "behind" the scene's of making this character I first saw at renderosity. Nice work!

dandavis hey dan, small world aint it :)

peoples I'm in the middle of rebuilding my site from the ground up with a few new sections one of them will be some small tutorials on building a character similar to this, I don't think it'll take me too long , but you were right this is all box modelled apart from the straps on goggles and "handbag". watch this space hehe
