I thought Alias|Wavefront were the world leading 3d program developers.
I don't understand why they doing this. Indeed the program is a bit too expensive but allot of companies and people use it anyway.
Maybe not as many using Max, but still allot of people.
I really hope this hasn't anything to do that it's going bad. Because I want to see a new version of maya in the future.
Lets hope they close the office's because it's going well, and they do not need to develope so much anymore...
Oh well...

No worries. Just a bump in the road.

veq- the fact that a company sets the standard for 3d graphics (or in any industry for that matter), doesnt inherintly make it succesful.

They saw this coming a long time ago already...there is a lot of "bad newS" comeing for Maya...Apple seems to be the one who is going to be buying it...but the problem is that all the "best" programmers Alias had were in California...
Chances are they wont want to work for less money once apple buys them out...and you know damn well companies like Avid and Newtek are foaming at the mouth to steal them to help "enhance" their programs...

I personaly think it's poetic justice. They have done our industry a big diservice by thier cut throat marketing and putting out a program with core problems and not fixing them. They just keep putting more flashy crap each revision that isnt really used in production. Dont get me started on the renderer or the skinning of a character. They shot for high end and high end only and saturated it to death. They made no attempt to hit people with lower budgets. They have helped put alot of smaller houses out of business because all the suits who dont know jack crap about what we do know only one thing and that is the word "Maya." If you dont do it in Maya then it cant be done. That was all done by AW marketing. Alot of small houses who tried to get higher end work found if they werent using Maya then the couldnt land the job because the client had only heard te word Maya. When some houses starting using Maya there were so many things that they needed to have programmers on hand to fix or create a workaround they lost thier ass add on top of that the $17,000 price tag that should have come with a jar a vasoline. I find it funny now that XSI 2 is out houses who have made the switch from Maya to XSI are posting a 50% decrease in turn around time than when they were in Maya.
I just say what goes around comes around.

This is getting blown waaay out of proportion. Its more of a relocation than a shutdown.

That is HARDLY the truth...
They only offered the "move" to people who worked there for 3 years or more..and then you would have to take a massive pay cut ....if you were there for a YEAR..you got offered a package (with a few sneaky "conditions) for 3 months, and everyone else..just got a nice goodbye...
Trust me...this isnt getting blown out of proportion..this is some really sad news...

So, letīs get to the point people... do you think Maya will be discontinued, or itīs quality will be compromised?
Looks like a lot of A|W people is moving to Discreet/Avid...

Where did you get this information?
And what have you read that indicates Maya is in trouble any sort of trouble? I can tell you for sure there there will be a version 4.5 or 5.0, supposedly they were going to stop doing .5 versions, and do only whole number versions, but who knows what they are thinking right now.

I don't see what the big deal is...big buiseness makes cutbacks layoffs all the time. It doesn't necessarliy mean the buiseness is having troubles. It usually just means they are cutting what they see as unecessary costs.

I hope this isn`t the case but... if you are owned by dinosaurs then its possible you could become exstict, and look who own A|W.. SGI! so that explains the job cuts. Hope they sort it all out or someone buys A|W and maintains there dominant force in software.

...and you know damn well companies like Avid and Newtek are foaming at the mouth to steal them to help "enhance" their programs...
and vice versa. this is the way the industrie works. i mean, ok maya had the first hair & fur engine *i can remember of*, does that mean that other companies may not add such capabilities to their applications ? i understand your point but if every program would only have the functions developed by their companies we would end up using 4 or more packages, meaning we wouldn't have work at all ;)

I must agree with Sigma....it's nothing!
2 days ago i was talking to our local dealer of Maya ....they just want to make maya cheaper and the only way is to cut some of their many offices...or something like that!
Anyway whatever happens i hope that AW keeps making MAYA 'cuase if it stops i will go nuts !!!
