the closest I can get is dotty gray stuff where shadows are supposed to be. I'm trying to do it with mental ray, I've scaled the atrributes of the floor and the object, the camera options, the rendering options, I just cant seem to figure out how to get it to work.

What kind of Shadows did you enable? I guess you turned on the Depth Map Shadow ?
If you want a crisp shadows better use the other Raytraced Shadow and leave the settings in Render Global set to Preview.

I went back and fourth between the two, or atleast I believe. There's like 3 different places you can change it, I dont know if they all have to be on or turning it on one place turns it on all over but I tried everything. As far as I know I tried both depth map and raytracing. I believe depth map gives me the gray dotty shadows, and raytracing doesn't give me anything. Could it be the surface im reflecting on, or the object that's reflecting are there any particular attributes that need to be on for it to work? I'm using a white spotlight on a gray object that's hovering over a white nurbs plane.

Use one of them. Unless you are after some exotic look of course !
Just enabled Raytraced Shadows and you should get them showing up the way you want.

Again, set your render settings to something like Preview or whatever makes Raytracing on. Make sure you are rendering with Mental Ray as well:

IŽd set shadow rays to something like 16 or so, as otherwise they can get quite grainy!

True, but you will need that only if you have set the Radius to something higher than zero. It's used to get soft shadows like you do with Area Lights. For crisp well defined shadows, leave those attributes set to 0.
