View Full Version : question about smoothing polys...
mabuffaloe 01-04-2003, 07:06 PM Hi guys, I've been working on modeling a sink and I am stuck! I'm posting 2 images here, one before smoothing and one after. I selected the interior faces (inside the sink) and smoothed, but I lost the hard edges around the outside as well. I want to be able to keep the hard edges that are the boundary of the sink. How can I do this? I've played with the setting of the smooth tool and can't get the edges to stay sharp. Is there a way to confine the smoothing to just selected faces?

here is the image after smoothing:

you should be fine with selecting the faces and applying the smooth. maybe selectt one row of faces less to get the hard edges at this position...

well, I tried using a few less faces and got the same result. Even when i chose only the bottom face of the sink and checked "keep hard edges" I got the same result on the outside edges. Any suggestions?

I tried to reproduce the problem with a polycube but everything went fine with "keep selection border" turned on. try to add some polygons in between and do a delete history on the object. good luck ;)

well, i tried both suggestions with the same result.... Is there a way to select edges in a poly object and detach them? that might work....do you mind if i send you the file so maybe you can see what's wrong with it?

Hey! nevermind... I got it to work.. I selected the faces, extracted them, and then smoothed them! It didn't touch the outside edges... Thanks for your help, miabe

When you smooth something and want to keep a sharp edge, you have to put more geometry at the edge. The smooth function averages the distance between poly to poly. So you can selecet just the inside faces and smooth them, Or do what you did, which is add more geometry.

thanks for the explanation, dmcgrath! Does the extract tool add more geometry? I was trying to work with the wireframe afterwards and it seemed to have done more than just cut the edges... do you know what the tool actually does to the geometry?

My fault, sorry, you wrote EXTRACT, I read EXTRUDE. I'm stupid.
Extract actually cuts the geometry away from the poly object you select the faces in.
As far as I know all it does is just cut the geometry. But remember now you have two pieces there, unless you recombine them.

no problem.... I'm glad I'm finally all straightened out now :) thanks for your help guys!
