Yo man sorry to hear about your friend, personally I feel your body is just a garage you park your soul in.

I like your approach, starting rough and light - great. His pose is great, nice curve in his line of action, also he's not centered which is good for the composition. As the for the Camaro, you'll need to plot out some vanishing points, looks like two for this one, all horizontal and length lines converge to the VP (one point only length converges, width/height all 90 deg).

Scott Robertson's tutorial on mirroring curves would work great for this situation!

I know it's rough but try to commit lines.- Keep in mind as you rough it in, keep the lines long and flowing, even if they suck ass, when it's time to start polishing it, you can pick lines to darken. I find for people I like to hold my pencil at its very end and lightly get the flow happening.
