Lack of sleep, wish I started sooner but this is fun. Have a lot of detail work to do, fill shadows, moss in for ground, add some more plants, etc.

looks like a 3d base comp for this image, correct? you can do wonderful things by incorporating a 2d-3d mix. am curious if this dude knows that the rocket will explode in mid-air -- is this blissful ignorance on his part, or joyful suicide? also find the repeating phallic imagery of the rocket and the mountain to be offbeat and enjoyable.
my only suggestion would be to adjust the height of the mountain in the background so that its peak does not line up visually with the tip of the rocket -- this verticle alignment ads a sense of static lockdown visually to the image. by shrinking (or enlarging) the mountain a bit, you increase the perspective and pull more attention to your rocket-man.
fun work!

Sent this before, guess it did not get under the line art function.

is this guys supposed to be tiny? or is he an islander that foud the worlds biggest bottle rocket? if he's small, maybe an indication of scale or pointy ears or something would help. or just make him a bug or a hamster.
if he's a man-sized man, then the mountain should probably look more distant. i.e. smaller and faded.
have fun, mate

Thanks for the comments! I made a lot of changes, painted over the 3D mountain, it now looks a little like a tomb-stone, (hopefully not the fate of the rider). Added some boxer shorts, and redid the head with a photo of me, may paint on that some more too. Still many changes maybe add a skull icon and other text to the rocket, some more close-up plants for scale and maybe another insect for scale.

I got really tired of the rocket and changed the rider a good bit, but both are gone for now. The piece is a bit more metaphysical and contemplative this way. If time permits I will add a biologically based rocket and updated rider. As often is the case, the ambiguity is the metaphor of the drama; the floating shells are like musical notes reverberating off each other. While the “dead” snail shell dreams of elevating to the sky.
To rehash by work flow, I started with a crude 3D set of some rocks, the rocket, the sky and a strange pointy mountain. Most of this has been painted over or removed. I recently photographed some sea shells (held by hand) spliced the images together and retouched and composted them.

Got the new rider built. At first the character was just going to be a Hummingbird, when I added a turtle shell and then I added the bio-ship with small alien. In terms of a story it would be interesting to see a view from inside the tiny rider’s bio-ship and share in their adventures. If I had time I would make this image more of a close up of the bird and rider, but as a story this close up would logically be would be the next scene or page in the story.
This contest has really been a lot of fun, hope to get a website up soon and also start interacting with others.
