Does it help to practice model, or is there a quicker and better way of learning? By practice modelling, I mean, choosing something like an eye or a hand, and model it from scratch repeatedly using different methods and shapes, every day until you have it hammered.

yeah that's a good way to practice. Trial and error is a good way too. Just modeling and seeing what works. Also looking at good modelers wireframes helps a lot.

Of course it helps! That is how I learned it. Just pick a cool character you want to model and try it. It may not look like you want at first but it will get better. Yes, or maybe only an eye, nose or hand.

Observation... is very important too. The more you model the more you are going to see forms, flow, etc earlier. Study the form and flow of the thing you want to model. Read anatomy books etc...

Good luck!

While I don't always succed at it, I try to model one new thing each day. It may be as simple as a bottle cap or as complicated as a high-poly cell phone. Today I created my first necklace, quite good actually. Yesterday I made an egg, but one that was super high-poly with a curve as close to perfect as I could get it. I didn't save either of them, I just did it for the skills practice.

I agree with the previous post that you should spend time studying other peoples wireframes, its a great way to learn.

I have hundreds of liitle bits and pieces of characters that I did to learn how to model various parts. I didnt actually create one entire character until I had done lots of practices.

Other than that just try and do a 30 minute model every day, aside from other things you may be working on. Just pick any object around you and go for it. When I was doing poly modeling at university the lecturer would start everyday like this- he would put a random object on the desk and you would have 30mins to complete a model. The time restriction also helps you to speed up your modeling skills and forces you to become comfortable with keyboard and menu shortcuts
