View Full Version : Short Film: The Duel
Fasty 01-04-2003, 07:46 AM I thought I'd start documenting the WIP of a short film I am trying to create called "The Duel". Currently I am just experimenting with some techiques before I get stuck into the script/storyboard.
This is the main protagonist of the story. You might recognise him from the 3D Toon challenge that I forgot to enter.

Here's an animation I did to test weight maps and stuff and see how he moved.

Here's a little test animation I did last night of the incomplete Spitfire flying around. It was a test for shadows and camera movement. I chucked the pilot in there at the last minute just to see how he looked. I still have a lot to model on the spitfire though, including the joystick!

C/C most welcome!

hey that looks pretty neat :) the first anim didn't work for me (i guess divx on the mac didn't like that particular verison of the avi format). but the other one was cool if slightly disorientating. looking forward to seeing more as you make this project happen

Oh dear something went horribly awry there. Like I said, I'll try recompressing the first one :) Could a mod delete that other thread? Thanks!!

There! Try that. It's only 248Kb now too.

WOW!!! That ROCKS!!!
I love how you made it look like a full on anime! :buttrock:
Do you use LW or Max? Looks to me like LW for some reason... heh. I'm interested in how you did the effect, it really worked out! Did you just model in 3D and then apply toon shading?
I love the animation with the airplane! I can't wait to see the rest... Good job man!

Thankyou everyone for such kind words!
CamW: Yep it's Lightwave! Yep it's all 3d with toonshaders applied. I used BESM on the character, and Supercelshader on the plane. I think I might write a tutorial eventually once I've learned more and explain why I've done that (if I can remember!). And to say it's like anime especially at this early stage is the ultimate compliment, thankyou!!
Once again thanks everyone. I got inspired so I thought I'd give you a look at the second player in the short. And for the record, I came up with this concept at least a year before I'd even heard of Reign of Fire! Bad quality to keep the file size down.

Looks like an awesome start, looking forward to seeing more of it in the future. My only comment would be to make the dragon a bit thinner as he reminds me a bit too much like good ol' puff with his big butt/midsection. If he's going to be dogfighting a spitfire he might need to do some aerobic exercise and trim down :)

Nice dragon man, great modelling job.
On the fire breathing.... Does his belly or chest area expand just before and then contract afterwards ?? Can't tell on the animation. Just some secondary animation if you don't have it already.

Thanks for the comments! Great point about the dragon expanding his chest and secondary animation in general. I'm still actually modelling the dragon so I'll remember that when it comes to redoing his torso. To tell the truth this was a quick animation put together in about half an hour to put in my showreel, so I think the dragon is going to improve in a big way. Well, I hope so anyway :D
Sorry for the lack of updates too, I'm busy trying to put together my website.

Great animation-work! All of them.
You have the "touch", man! Great little rythmic diggin´ on the "strutt". And even thoug you said the dragon was animated on the fly, it still has (what I find very hard to achieve) that heaviness in its moves.
I agree with the advantage of reducing its buttsize, though.

Thanks everyone for taking the time to download my work and criticise it, I really really appreciate it :D
Wow, great job, this is looking really good!

Awesome stuff! Just one comment on the walk...
For the strut cycle, you might want to rotate the torso left and right a little bit as he walks (when his hands move forward, make that side of the torso rotate forward, and vice versa).
Again, great stuff!

I just downloaded both anims. Fasty.
And I am very impressed! Your character is neat!
and cell shading looks very very good.
I hope you do something With biplanes. fly under bridges.
flying low over water, machine guns! the whole shebang!
If you need any inspiration I recommend that manga film.
Porko Rosso the flying pig. I'm sure you've seen it. But if you
haven't check it out.
Nice work.
Cheers.

haha actually I watched Porko Rosso alot to see how they drew their planes.
I hope to make it as exciting as you're describing it there! Yes, there will be machine guns, lightning, fire, flying low over water (with a twist! :D Can't wait for that one...) so I think there's enough to keep me busy there for the next ten years or so :'(
