I was wondering how everybody else configures max's UI for there own personal taste? C'mon, I know you all like working faster :) And what res are you working at?

Here's a screen grab of mine (1600 x 1200 - 32 bit - 21" monitor). The quad (shift+alt+RMB) is just one of my many custom ones. There all rebuilt.

Here's a scaled down version for you small monitor slow connection folk :D

Hi !

Well, I also have customised UI, but I'm only in 1280*1024 (19" monitor) : 1600*1200 is looking good but it's a bit slow with large scenes (50000 poly and +). Geforce 3 card inside

BTW, if you have tips to improve the display speed or some advices on softquadro ... :)

I wasn't really talking about computer specs, I guess I just wanted to get people to post screen grabs of their Max UI, so other people can possibly see a faster or more efficient way to work.

If you dont know how to take a screen capture just open whatever you want to capture (max or photoshop or whatever) and press the Print Scrn button on the keyboard. It will copy it to the clipboard, then open photoshop or something similar and paste then save.

(TIP: if you focus on a single window and hold alt when you press Print Scrn, it will only capture the selected window... perfectly cropped. :) )

Keyboard baby. Lot's of Maxr2 and Maxr3 key commands with a smattering of my own key setups. Mix in some photoshop style commands, and I only use the quads for general transformation stuff.

Also running 1600x1200 I feel so cramped running anything else. Oooo....it's starting to pinch. :)

Go into Expert mode, drag the viewport dividers to give a big perspective view then change it to User, then assign every command you use to a hotkey.

That's my set-up. Keys are faster than quad menus, so I only use the default quads to avoid having to swith between them.

Where's the screen grabs? :D

See I think the quads are faster (I know this is a personal pref)cause you keep your left hand on the Ctrl, Alt, Shift and Z key's and you almost never have to look down away from the monitor.

Just assign all your MOST used to 2 sets of quads (mine are Shift+RMB and Alt+Shift+RMB) and you have just about everything. Well.... that's for modeling and some misc stuff (I use I think 1 or 2 more separate quads for animation). I never leave expert mode unless I have to crank up some iterations or tweak some settings :) It's super fast.

p.s. Please no comments about always looking at my monitor. I'm purposly trying to burn my retina's out (I'm timing myself) :D haha

Sorry, no screengrab. Probably wouldn't be as instructive as a good description anyway, so:

I'm mostly a modeler. For speed, I've gotta go with keyboard shortcuts. Being an experienced typist, I rarely have to look away from my screen to punch keys anyway. Also with MeshTools+csPolyTools, a middle mouse button, and the transform gizmo, I rarely have to leave the perspective view to model. Basically, all I have is the main toolbar, a tab panel of commands I prefer not to put on the keyboard (and which don't work on quads), a single perspective viewport, and the default quads. I pull up the command panel occasionally for specific tweaks and for UV mapping. Most of the time, I don't even have to think about finding the tool I want, and I can concentrate solely on the quality of my model.

I've lately been considering getting more use out of the quads by trying to emulate, as well as possible, the workflow in Mirai. I used the Mirai eval for a month and fell in love with the way that so much power could be packed into such a minimalist workspace.

well, i keep the layout pretty standard, i run 1200 x 1600 and i have the command pannel out so it is 2 times the thickness, i also show all the tabs (and some custom made tabs) and anything else i just use keyboard shortcuts. the only things i use the quad menu for are hiding objects and using the light lister.

I set up max to mimic the hotbox of maya, then hotkey as much as possible! Please no booing maxers. Cant always work in a studio of your preference package. But on a good note this setup is pretty advanced, in that all section of the hotbox are seperated in large groups. Nearly covers my screen, but in use when it pops up all modeling tools are upper left quandrants. Lower left is all animation tools, Upper right is dynamics, and creation, render, lighting, misc is bottom right. I'll try and post a screen grab from work tomarrow.
