In Polynesian Mythology, Whiro is the lizard-god of the dead, evil and darkness.
He lives in the dark misty underworld and is accompanied by a group of evil spirits.
He inspires evil thoughts in the minds of people.

I designed this bust with the base built in xsi and detailed in Zbrush. I've done up to the mid-level detailing so far and will be
focusing on creating finer details through a bump map. The model is level 4 zbrush imported into xsi.

hope you like it! :)

lovely modeled so far!

Is the round ball/bump on his jaw another horned/horn?

Good looking site btw...

Hi - this is a really lovely model.
I have a question for you: Your base mesh seems very detailed and dense in some areas (esp the teeth) compared to the neck area - would it not make sense to model the teeths and other details entirely in zbrush, since i imagine that after tesselation in zbrush those areas are super heavy?

Amazing work pierre. Did you use projection master for the wrinkles on those horns or did you just modeled them in one by one with the standard brush in zbrush?

Amazing as always Pierre.
Looking very promising so far.
If I would find one thing to crit it would be that round "blob" below his mouth / chin area. It looks a little awkward to me, but nothing any major.

Keep it up mate!

thanks for the quick feedback guys, I really want to test out colors soon, I have something in mind already, but I'll probably do bumps first. Thanks for stopping by

MichaelMotion: The ball on his jaw will be a vivid color used as a sign of dominance among the males. It will hopefully make more sence with a texture on.

SideShow: all the renders are taken in perspective view, no ortho

Trenox: The actual teeth were not imported in zbrush, but it's true that the "gum" is already pretty heavy in the base, I always get carried away in xsi because I'm so use to pulling points rather than zbrushing.

Jinian: I used projection master layed as a base and then reworked it with the standard brush to emphasize the details.

rsalonen: you're not the first one mentionning the ball being awkward, I hope it will make more sense with the textures. I picture it beeing kind of like in the iguanas but it's exagerated and it will be a bright color.

zuliban: hey buddy, thanks for your comment, your turn to show your character! hehe

Pierre buddy, looking great so far... all I would say is the mechanics of the jaw structure is a little bit confusing, but i'm guessing it will allow his mouth to open wider than a normal ball joint. After having Scratch live with me for four years, (see photo) i'm pretty familiar with agressive males. The large scale you are are refering to in your dragon, if you are mimicking an iguana, should be a scale. If your Zbrush work reflected that I think it would look more natural. I really like the idea, I just think it needs to be realized a bit differently. But, maybe it will all work out with the bump map.

I'm sure you will make it look great though pierre.

Hellooooo Pierre!

Finally i get to see your dragon! I have to say your attention to detail
has always been impressive! It does look really evil! Great Work man!
One crits though, the rounded shape on the side of his jaw, feels kinda
empty compared to the rest. Is that for another horn? Awesome model
pierre! Cant wait to this one finished!

May I ask you to explain a little more about the Polynesian inspiration?

I spent 17 years in French Polynesia and I never heard of whiro, here is a (French) link about ma’ohi mythology just to see if we’re talking about the same culture:

maybe it's just me, but I’m curious ;)

Great detailing on this so far. The ram-like horns look very good. His face looks very evil with those skull like features - not your typical dragon face.

Sorry guys for the late reply, I've been through BIG changes lately, new job/ moving out...I'm back to Vancouver now...and been super busy! I finally have some time to go back to personal projects and wanted to say a huge thanks for the comments/feedback! I'm currently working on another model but would like to come back to this one at some point.

pablov: Yup, I designed this one :wip:

Andre: I explain my usual lighting setup in my woverine thread, then I adjust it depending on the charater. lighting setup (http://www.pierrebourgeot.com/images_post/Wolverine/wolverine17.jpg)

JOAS: Thanks for the pic and crits! one can never have enough ref pics! I need to review the round thing on his jaw, my intention was for it to be a ball of fat lol well...looks like I'm back now hehe

fabianloing: yup that area has been mentionned quite a few times, I'll see if I wanna return to this model any time soon.

keops: Sorry, I'm definitely not an expert in Polynesian Mythology, but I did find a few links with a brief definition on the net if you type Whiro.

malonet: merci, c'est un honneur que tu puisses reconnaitre une uniformité dans mon travail au niveau style.

ToastMan: hehe sorry for no updates on wolverine, I'm planning to model sabertooth and put them together in a still image. :wip:
