Whoa!!!
This is awesome! Short, sweet, clear, and most importantly, very fun and entertaining.
My favorite is how the girl chases him around. The only critique is the final fish smacking his face at the end: it's a tad bit sloppy and is not consistent with the awesome quality of the rest of the animation.
Again, this is one of the best student shorts I've seen in a while!
Congrats!

Awesome!
I love it, the story is so simple, well told and executed.
I like the look/design and color scheme.
How did you do at industry day? any big interviews? ;)
Was tony rig changed? it seems like he has more volume on his limbs, looks better I think.
Anyway, awesome short!

Nice to see that this quality of work is being put out by students. I'm really excited that there was a story and great animation in the same reel. There were some animation issues but barely and considering it's a student reel and probably had to be handed on a deadline there's no way they should be considered to bring down the reel. Good job and keep up the good work!!

i agree with ya nick! i also think that the current advances in technology has enabled people to develop professional quality work at home without a team like in a studio. but yea, its the artists imagination and skill which ultimately is the deciding factor.
according to a student reel, i thought this was fantastic work!!! :)

Hi theone17,
Thanks.
I did web/ graphic designing for over 2 years. Then I joined Moving Picture Company India Ltd (MPCIL), where I worked on television series for the Cartoon Network, Asia. I was mostly multi-tasking there (modeling, rigging, animation, lighting, rendering, compositing) and it was only during the last 6 months at MPCIL that I got interested in animation and since then I've been concentration only on this aspect of CG. I soon enrolled myself for a 8-month Digital Character Animation course at Sheridan to further hone my skills in character animation. That's my story...in short :)
Thank you kantcho!
Hey Dhruv bhai, it is so good to find you on Cgtalk. Thank you for the good words! Are you still working with DD? Gud luck and keep in touch!

Blusoul - Hi! It certainly didn't feel like a 8-month course...the time just flew and in no time the course was over. It was a very intense program and there was a lot to learn from other students and my instructors.

Very well done, story flow smoth. Watch over and over, never become old.
Story almost complite, except why he avoiding girl? Cutes? He has other girl?
She is rich he is poor? Can add couple details to help find his motivation for avoiding her.
But this is personal sugetion. Animation is superb! And characters design better then many pro studios. Lokking forward to see more of your work!.

Geekatplay - Thank you.http://forums.cgsociety.org/images/icons/icon7.gif I agree with you that I could have added other details regarding characters' background. Unfortunately, our time limit for the film at Sheridan was one-minute. :( ...and believe me, from scratch to final product in 4-months, even a minute seemed a lot.
Here's some information you required. To begin with..Synopsis http://forums.cgsociety.org/images/icons/icon1.gif: This is a light-vein story of Lolly Poo Lee's unrequited love for Johnny Po and how her frustrated expression of this failed love still compensates Johnny for his matching failure in fishing!
Background - Johnny Po is a poor fisherman, who is a loser when it comes to fishing. He is innocently stupid and is more concerned with his fishing fortunes than actually noticing the girl. Lolly Poo Lee on the other hand lives in a big house and has everything to her disposal...except Johnny.
Hope this helps. :)
Cheers!

3 times now i watched it --- i wish it was longer. great narration, great story -- i simply love the concept.
ha, the end always makes me laugh.
hmm, as far as crits go:
i think you could have put more into that last shot (as someone else mentioned, it feels kind of sloppy/rushed when compared to the rest) -- i still like it though ;)
when he recovers from getting hit by the fish for the first time -- he has sort of a weird (subtle) wip-lash effect as he picks up the fish -- feels kind of weird to me (like out of place motion). maybe try it without the anticipation (its very subtle, but i thought i might mention it) --- then again, it could just be preference.
---------------
really great short though -- hope to see more like this. and like i said, excellent story / execution.

Hey amannin - Thank you for the comments and suggestions. I had 3 endings in my mind during the initial stage, but decided to stick to this one eventually. However, I agree that the execution could have been more elaborate.
About the wip-lash effect. Would definitely incorporate your suggestion in that shot and see how it looks. That's an interesting observation. Thanks! :) images/icons/icon13.gif
Hey Sachin - That's exactly what I have in mind...Given a choice I would make one short film every year...but all depends on how busy I am with work. Thanks for the motivation though :)
Hi JPavitt.... Thanks for the nice words. The contrast between the narration and the action was to add gags to the short...I am glad it worked.

Excellent work! It has a bright, innocent feel about. You managed to tell a complete story in 1:30 and the narration added history/depth to the characters and proceedings. The editing was smooth and kept the whole thing flowing nicely. Only crit would be where he jumps out of the boat at the end and gets hit with the fish. It seems slow and unrealistic compared to the rest(unless its intended to be slow motion, in which case I think a quicker take would be better-like a sharp punchline at the end of a joke-since the moment is intended to be humurous). Still though, all around excellent, 5 stars.

07-20-2006, 02:26 AM
Thank you burdennwoe!
The last shot was indeed slow motion. As I said earlier in the thread, I wasn't so sure about the ending. After brain-storming for a while with fellow classmates and instructors, we took an unanimous decision to go for the slow motion.
And now that two of you have pointed that out, I guess the execution lacked the punch from my side. If I ever get to work on it again, shall implement your suggestion to see how it looks. Nice suggestion though :) http://forums.cgsociety.org/images/icons/icon13.gif
