Hello everyone.
I'm trying to kick myself into doing some artwork, and I am begining to realize just how 'rusty' that I am at it.

I am not sure what is wrong with this sketch. Is the neck too long or is the perspective just messed up ...or...?

Hi there, Vegan,

Welcome to the Anatomy Forum. :)

I did a quick paintover of your image ~ I think the perspective is a bit forced, and the lines you had to describe the lower part of the jaw were a bit misplaced. Check this out, and let me know what you think. :)

I know it has been a while since I posted anything.
I am not sure if this is even posted in the correct place.
Should I have posted it as an anotomy thread ?

I reworked the image and made the perspective a little less warped. Actually this works out better, since now you can see the sun, whereas before the view was just straight down.

can you tell me where the horizon would be in an angle like this ?
I suppose the figure could also be standing at an upward slope though and this would change the horizon.

I'm clueless.

How is the anatomy of the figure so far ...any better / worse than before ?

Just call it Anatomy Thread of Vegan. Just post some random text in the first post to get it started, which you can always edit later. Once you've created your Anatomy Thread, if you like, I can merge this thread with your Anatomy Thread, so you have just one thread in the Personal Anatomy & Sketchbook Threads Forum. If I merge the threads, (which is up to you) all the posts in this thread will go to your Anatomy Thread, and this thread will be deleted.

With respect to your current piece, this is not looking bad. :) I do recommend not using any sort of lens flare effect in your work ~ this is so common an effect that people recognize it right away and tend to discourage it's use. I would suggest painting a sun instead.

What I really recommend however is working out your value structure in grayscale before coloring it. Check out this basic traditional / digital Shading Tutorial:

For reference, I suggest checking out these sites:

I think reference is really essential for something like this. If you can't find suitable reference, I would recommend photographing yourself or having a friend photographing you with the lighting setup you would like to paint.

What my real advice would be with respect to your work generally is to participate in the Open Figure Drawing Workshops. Working through a particular piece is one thing, but the real issue for any artist learning the figure is to draw and paint on a consistent basis and to practice.

For example, I would invite you to join in the most recent OFDW:

Hello everyone.
I'm trying to kick myself into doing some artwork, and I am begining to realize just how 'rusty' that I am at it.

This is my first serius attempt at 'art' using Painter / Photoshop, and I need your harshest criticisms of it since it is now just in the sketch phase.

What I am especially wondering about is the length of the legs and arms, and the perspective.

Where would my horizon be in this image ? ( BTW The lens flares are just temporary :thumbsup: )

With respect to the horizon line, I would just start to play with diagonals and see what looks right. Try looking at reference of landscapes from similar perspectives and try to create a really dramatic, sun~soaked landscape.

Hey Vegan,

The rocks look fantastic :thumbsup: and fill the empty space really nicely, though their solid and realistic style doesn't quite match the abstract look of the cliff (those white lines make it look a bit like a photoshop-filtered-photo).

Other than that looks great!

MichalB : The image is just in the rough sketch phase. Everything in the image is just a temporary fill-in.:)
I'm still not sure what style I should do the image in. I would like the image to remain loose and fluid, but I would still like some detail to show through.
Maybe I'll do both a low res and a high res version.

Cyanid: Hmmm...I'll let you make your own interpretation when the image is done.
If others can see the 'story' behind the image without me telling them, I will then know I have done something right.:thumbsup:

I am liking the rocky background as well. :)

I would check out some of the Challenge entries (http://features.cgsociety.org/challenge/journey_begins/view_entries.php?view=2d&sort=lastupdate) for inspiration.

Another thing I would recommend is working this out in grayscale first. I think a lot of the issues you would run into compositionally are much easier changed in b/w vs. color. :)

Another small update.

Thank you all for the advice.
I periodically check my work in grayscale. If you see something - anything - needs fixing, please don't hesitate to mention it.

This is my first real attempt at doing something besides a sketch on the computer.
This is hard !:sad:
This image will be more of a 'speed-paint style vs. hyper-real.
I spent over 10 hours today trying to get the rocks to look just perfect - only to take a break and realize that I lost the 'look' I was after.
So ...I started over and regained a more fluid look in around 30min.

What a waste of time. Oh well. I guess I learn from my mistakes.

Here is just a suggestion for what you might do with the backdrop to make it more dramatic ~ also I recommend experimenting with some blue hues to make the scene seem more isolated:

I find work done in photoshop or similar programs as ugly if not done right. But if you keep training yourslef in time you will pass that barrier and you will awe people with your work. Takes time, but keep going :)

Yes. I'm still struggling.
I'm having an especially hard time trying to figure out how to work well in Painter, so I think I'll mainly be doing this one in Photoshop.

What things should I avoid, so as not to make an 'ugly' picture ?

There are so many brushes and so many settings to use that I find it all mind boggling.

I'm slow...but I'm also learning as I go.

Small update.

After looking at my first or second post, I seem to have lost some of the dramatic mood I was trying to achieve.

I added some background elements, but was wondering if it throws the whole focus of the picture off.

Also, the colors are boring. Please feel free to give me some suggestions on what I can do to improve the picture. ( Feel free to modify the image and share your ideas. )

BTW, I'll try to add some more blue tones to the image ( perhaps in the rocks ? ) This might look good too, since tha lava will be casting an red-orange hue from below.

Really liking the reworked piece, and find the addition of more mountains / rocks in the distance a nice addition. :thumbsup: I would suggest continuing to push the values of this piece and to work monochromatically until you get the drawing to be just the way you want it. :)

Rebecca, thanks for the invite. I guess this would help me to not 'burn out' on a single image.

I'm currently trying to teach myself Softimage|XSI while working full time and doing other things on the weekends. Add to that the fact that I have no clue what I'm doing with this project, and you can see how that it is going nowhere fast.
I guess I 'bit off more than I could chew' with this project. ( Yet again )

I should start by learning the programs before I post anything done with them. ( Hard knock lesson # 100 )

You idea sounds great. The K.I.S.S. rule !

I'm working on some other projects currently. When I am done, I'll join you folks.

No progress so far. I added some clouds to the background, some steam rising from the lava, etc.
The clouds look too much like .... um .... not clouds.
I think I have just 'lost it' composition wise. I plan to bring the foreground rock layer down a bit once I flatten the image.
Also on the list is to make the smoke demons look a little more like they are made from smoke vs. whatever they look like now, bring out some more color in the lava, figure out the correct balance between the foreground and background ( the opacity of the steam )

Lol, it definitely looks as though you're avoiding the figure :D ~ all the more reason to participate in the Portraits Worskhop as you get the time. I'm leaving the Workshop open indefinitely, so you are always free to use the thread as a resource. :)
